Acid regurgitation (Tun Suan) is mostly attributed to the Liver. This is because excessive Liver Qi overacts upon Spleen Earth; over time, Spleen Earth becomes deficient, leading to slower transmission and transformation. Food stagnates in the body, mixing turbidly, which gives rise to the sour taste. For cases of Spleen deficiency with failure of transportation accompanied by Cold, Er Chen Tang (Two-Aged Decoction) added with Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu) and Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang) should be used. For cases of Spleen deficiency with failure of transportation accompanied by both Cold and Heat, Lian Li Tang (Coptis and Ginseng Combined Decoction) added with Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) and Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia) should be used. For cases of undigested food belonging to Excess (Shi), Ping Wei San (Peaceful Stomach Powder) should be used. For cases of undigested food belonging to Deficiency (Xu), Liu Jun Zi Tang (Six-Gentlemen Decoction) should be used.
Er Chen Tang
(See formula under Vertigo) Add Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu) and Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens (Shengjiang). Decoct in water to obtain half a cup, take warm.

Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Gan Cao (Licorice Root and Rhizoma, honey-fried), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma) (each 1 qian). Add Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi) and Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia). Decoct in water to obtain half a cup, take warm.
Ping Wei San
Cang Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 3 qian, stir-fried), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 2 qian), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, 2 qian, stir-fried), Gan Cao (Licorice Root and Rhizoma, 1 qian, honey-fried). Diarrhea (Xie Xie) results from the sinking of Liver and Spleen Qi. Normally, grain is stored in the Large Intestine, and fluids seep into the Bladder. Once dampness obstructs Earth and the Spleen loses its power of steaming and transforming, and Wood stagnates causing the Liver to lose its authority of free flow and drainage, fluid qi cannot enter the Bladder but instead mixes with grain and trends toward the Large Intestine. This is how diarrhea arises. If dampness knots in the chest and abdomen, distension and fullness occur. If stagnant Wood attacks the Zang-Fu organs, pain occurs; this is the natural progression of the pathogenic process. For early-stage diarrhea with abdominal pain, distension, and difficult urination, where the disease belongs to Cold-Dampness, Wei Ling Tang (Stomach and Wu Ling Powder) modified should be used. If Spleen Yang has failed and the intestines and stomach are cold and slippery, Fu Ling Si Ni Tang (Poria Four-Reversal Decoction) should be used. For cases of purging undigested food, interior Cold with exterior Heat, sweating, and cold extremities, Tong Mai Si Ni Tang (Unblocking Pulse Four-Reversal Decoction) should be used. For diarrhea occurring from the fifth watch until dawn, with abdominal pain and fixed timing, belonging to Spleen-Kidney Deficiency-Cold, Si Shen Wan (Four Spirits Pill) should be used. For chronic diarrhea with simultaneous Cold and Heat, Wu Mei Wan (Mume Pill) should be used.
Wei Ling Tang
(See formula under Abdominal Distension/Qi Gu) Add three jin of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). Decoct in water to obtain half a cup, take warm. If Cold is severe with purging of undigested food, add Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) or Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), or add Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus). If Heat is severe with purging of intestinal mucus, remove Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus) and add Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix). If Deficiency is severe, add Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma).
