Treatise
The *Huangdi Neijing* (Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon) states: Yin deficiency generates internal heat. It also says: When Yin qi is still, the spirit is stored; when agitated, it dissipates and perishes. If food and drink are doubled in quantity, the intestines and stomach will be injured. Furthermore, it states: With labor and fatigue, the form and qi decline, grain qi is not abundant, the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner) cannot function, and the Lower Wan (lower part of the stomach) is blocked, causing Stomach qi to become hot. This heat steams the chest, thus generating internal heat. Therefore, those who wish to nourish Yin and prolong life should keep their mind and spirit tranquil and free from agitation, eat moderately without overindulgence, carefully avoid wind, cold, summer-heat, and dampness, and maintain regularity in walking, standing, sitting, and lying down. How could there be any fear of consumption and weakness? Nowadays, people have no restraint in their desires, their daily routine is irregular, the fire of the seven emotions and six desires often stirs within, and the excesses of diet and labor repeatedly injure the body. Gradually, this leads to the exhaustion of True Water (Kidney Yin), the flaming up of Yin Fire (Ministerial Fire), and the onset of steaming dryness-heat, or alternating chills and fever resembling malaria but not quite malaria. Ancient formulas call this "Steaming Disease," sometimes classified into twenty-four types or thirty-six types. Although the names differ, the syndromes are slightly different. Generally, it manifests as cough with fever, hemoptysis and expectoration, white turbid discharge or leukorrhea, nocturnal emission and night sweats, or mental confusion and dreams of sexual intercourse with spirits. Women may experience amenorrhea, becoming increasingly emaciated, gradually developing into a state of extreme consumption. Patients with this condition often neglect it initially for a long time, only seeking medical treatment after fever persists and the body becomes extremely thin, with True Yuan (Original Qi) already depleted. Even if Bian Que were reborn, he could not save one in ten thousand; this is truly lamentable! Although pitying one person may seem insufficient, consider those close caregivers or relatives who, through prolonged exposure, absorb its malignant qi and suffer infection. This is called "Chuan Shi" (Transmitting Corpse), also known as "Si Sang" (Corpse Zombie), "Fei Shi" (Flying Corpse), "Dun Shi" (Escaping Corpse), "Shi Zhu" (Corpse Injection), and "Gui Zhu" (Ghost Injection). These names describe its cruel transmission and mysterious, unpredictable nature. Nevertheless, this disease arises solely from physical weakness and labor injuring the Heart and Kidneys. It begins with one person's negligence and then spreads to dozens or hundreds, even leading to the extinction of families, which indeed happens. However, this disease is most detestable. After heat toxins accumulate for a long time, they generate strange evil insects that devour the essence of the viscera, producing various bizarre forms, which is truly shocking. If Labor injures the Liver and Gallbladder, it becomes hair insects, such as maggots in tiles, devouring tendons and fascia. If Labor injures the Heart and Small Intestine, it becomes feathered insects, resembling moths, mosquitoes, flies, or birds, devouring blood vessels. If Labor injures the Spleen and Stomach, it becomes flesh insects, resembling infants or earthworms, devouring muscles. If Labor injures the Lungs and Large Intestine, it becomes shell insects, resembling turtles, tortoises, shrimp, or crabs, devouring skin fat. If injury occurs to the Kidneys and Bladder, it becomes scale insects, resembling fish, dragons, or pangolins, devouring bone marrow; or, carrying the momentum of Ministerial Fire, it resembles cruel feathered insects like owls. The forms are diverse and countless. Whenever anyone feels these symptoms, early treatment is essential; delay renders it futile. The treatment method involves two aspects: first, killing the insects to cut off their root; second, tonifying deficiency to restore True Yuan. Medications are prescribed according to the meridians, each with order, aiming to act precisely like Cook Ding dissecting an ox, hitting the vital points, ensuring stability. If one waits until the disease is severe and Yuan Qi depleted, even following ancient methods to extract insects and tonify, fewer than one in a hundred patients will survive; at best, it can prevent further transmission. Students should study this carefully.
Pulse Diagnosis
The *Mai Jing* (Pulse Classic) states: In healthy men, a large pulse indicates extreme consumption, and a deficient pulse also indicates consumption.
In men suffering from consumption, the pulse is floating and large, with vexation in the hands and feet, worsening in spring and summer, and improving in autumn and winter. There is spontaneous emission of essence due to Yin-cold, weakness in the legs making walking difficult, and fullness in the Shaoyin (Kidney) channel.
For people aged fifty or sixty, if the disease presents with a large pulse, bi-syndrome affecting the back, intestinal borborygmus, or scrofula and goiter (Madao and Jia Ying), all are caused by consumption.
In healthy men, a weak, fine, and minute pulse indicates a tendency toward night sweats.
A pale-white complexion in men indicates thirst and loss of blood, sudden panting, and palpitations. A floating pulse indicates interior deficiency.
A hollow, deep, and wiry pulse in men, without chills or fever, shortness of breath, interior urgency, dysuria, pale complexion, and frequent dizziness, suggests a tendency toward epistaxis and abdominal fullness, caused by consumption.
A weak, minute, and choppy pulse indicates infertility and cold, clear essence.
Those prone to seminal loss suffer from lower abdominal tension, coldness at the glans penis, eye socket pain (or dizziness), and hair loss. An extremely deficient, knotted, and slow pulse indicates wasting-thirst, blood loss, and seminal loss.
A knotted, moving, minute, and tight pulse indicates seminal loss in men and dreams of sexual intercourse with spirits in women.
A deep, small, and slow pulse is named "Qi Depletion." The patient pants heavily upon rapid walking, has cold extremities, abdominal fullness, and in severe cases, loose stools and indigestion.
A wiry and large pulse: wiry indicates reduction (Yang deficiency), large indicates knotted (blood deficiency). Reduction indicates cold, knotted indicates deficiency. The combination of deficiency and cold is named "Ge Pulse." In women, it causes miscarriage and bleeding; in men, blood loss and seminal loss.
Methods
Danxi stated: This is extreme Yin deficiency, involving phlegm and blood, often with insects. The syndrome of Chuan Shi cannot be denied. The general principle is Si Wu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with child's urine, bamboo sap, and ginger juice.
Emaciation belongs to Fire, caused by burning and scorching. Severe muscle wasting is difficult to treat.
For severe Qi and Blood deficiency with fever developing into consumption, use Bu Tian Wan (Heaven-Replenishing Pill) supplemented with medicines for bone-steaming fever (such as Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, Phellodendri Cortex, Lycii Cortex, Ophiopogonis Radix, Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix, Artemisiae Annuae Herba, Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, Gypsum Fibrosum, Bambusae Leaves, and Mume Fructus).
For Chuan Shi Lao (Consumption transmitted from corpse), with alternating chills and fever, chronic cough with hemoptysis, and increasing emaciation, first use San Ao Tang (Three Unbinding Decoction), then Lian Xin San (Lotus Heart Powder).
Chuan Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried), Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, vinegar-fried yellow), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix), Du Huo (Angelicae Pubescentis Radix), Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix), Fu Ling (Poria), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), E Jiao (Asini Corii Colla, fried into pearls), Guan Gui (Cinnamomi Ramulus), Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix), Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, roots and nodes not removed), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, ground separately), Lian Rou (Nelumbinis Plumula, specifically the plumule within the lotus flower), Nan Xing (Arisaematis Rhizoma prepared with alum), Chuan Xiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, bran-fried), each 5 fen; Yuan Hua (Genkwa Flos, vinegar-fried black), a pinch; Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), 5 fen.
Finely cut, take as one dose. Add 3 jin of fresh ginger and one large date. Decoct in 2 sheng of water until 1 sheng remains. Strain and take warm. Wait until strange matter is vomited, then gradually reduce Yuan Hua. Yuan Hua contradicts Gan Cao; this contradiction kills insects. Frying stops heat and removes cold. This is the subtlety.
(Four methods from Danxi above)
Qing Hao Yin Zi (Artemisia Annua Drink) by Danxi. Treats Lao Zhai (Consumption).
Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba), 1 dou 5 sheng; Tong Bian (Child's Urine), 3 dou.
Decoct over mild and strong fire until Tong Bian reduces by 2 dou. Remove Qing Hao. Continue decocting until 1 sheng remains. Add 70 pig bile drops, or add 3-5 qian of Chen Sha (Cinnabar) and Bing Lang (Arecae Semen) powder. Boil a few times. Use Gan Cao powder to thicken/collect. Take one spoonful, mixed with clear water. Extremely effective.
Bai La Chen (White Beeswax Dust) alone greatly kills Zhai insects. Can be used in pills and powders. (Danxi)
Secret Formula for Extracting Chuan Shi Lao Insects: Gui Ku Yin Zi (Ghost Crying Drink) from Qing Nang Ji Fang.
Tian Ling Gai (Calvaria Humanum, fried with butter until yellow), Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, vinegar-fried yellow), Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, de-rubified), each 2 qian 5 fen; Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), 1 qian 2 fen 5 li; Tao Ren (Persicae Semen, 21 kernels, peeled, ground separately); Gu Xin (Drum Heart, vinegar-fried butter-yellow); Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba), half a handful; A Wei (Ferulae Resina), 1 qian; An Xi Xiang (Styrax), 1 qian; Guan Zhong (Cyrtomii Rhizoma), 2 qian 5 fen; Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, raw), 1 qian.
Finely cut the eleven herbs, pound into coarse powder. Soak in 2 sheng of child's urine overnight under stars and moon. At the third watch (4 AM), decoct until 8 fen remains. Strain and divide into three doses. Each dose is taken with one packet of the following powder, warmed at the fifth watch (5 AM). Lie down steadily. At the third hour (3 AM), take another dose. At sunrise, feel the urge to defecate. If not, take one more dose. If defecated, do not take more.
Powder Formula: Bing Lang (Arecae Semen), 2 qian 5 fen; Chen Sha (Cinnabar), 1 qian 2 fen 5 li; Chi Jiao Wu Gong (Scolopendra, soaked in ginger juice in bamboo tube, dried roasted), one piece; She Xiang (Moschus), 1 qian, ground separately; Wu Ji Fen (Gallus Gallus Domesticus excrement), 2 qian 5 fen (feed chicken hemp seeds five days prior, then collect feces).
Grind the five ingredients into fine powder, mix well, divide into three packets. Mix each into the previous decoction. ...After taking the medicine, foul matter and insects will be discharged. Collect in a basin, burn or fry in oil to kill. Burn all patient's clothes and bedding. Consume green onion porridge to recuperate and restore Yuan Qi. ...If insects are extracted, blue, red, or yellow colors indicate curability; black indicates difficulty. Even if the insect is old and the disease incurable, it can stop transmission to descendants. When preparing this medicine... do not let the patient know or smell it, as insects change and become hard to extract upon sensing the odor.
Experience Formula for Extracting Zhai Insects: Tian Ling Gai San (Skull Cap Powder) from Qing Nang Fang.
Tian Ling Gai (two fingers wide, washed with Bai Tan Xiang decoction, fried with butter until yellow); Bing Lang (Arecae Semen, five pieces, powdered); A Wei (Ferulae Resina), 2 qian, finely ground; She Xiang (Moschus), 3 fen, ground separately; Chen Sha (Cinnabar), 1 qian, ground separately; Gan Sui (Radix Euphorbiae Kansui, beaded type), 2 qian, powdered; An Xi Xiang (Styrax), 3 fen, cut finely with copper knife and ground.
Grind all seven ingredients extremely fine, mix evenly. Take 3 qian per dose, taken with soup.
Xie Bai (Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus), fourteen stalks; Qing Hao (Artemisiae Annuae Herba), two handfuls; Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), approx. 5 cun; Cong Bai (Allii Fistulosi Bulbus), fourteen stalks; Tao Zhi (Pruni Persicae Ramulus), Liu Zhi (Salicis Ramulus), Sang Zhi (Mori Ramulus), Suan Shi Liu Zhi (Punica Granati Ramulus), Mei Zhi (Pruni Mume Ramulus), each 7 cun (the above five branches must be sourced from the southeast direction).
Decoct the nine ingredients in 4 sheng of child's urine in a silver or earthenware vessel over mild and strong fire until 1 sheng remains. Strain and divide into three cups. Mix with the previous powder. Take one cup at the fifth watch. If nausea occurs after taking, hold a dried plum meat in the mouth to stop it. By the end of the fifth watch, feel bowel sounds, requiring the discharge of insects, foul matter, and yellow water. If not discharged after one dose, walk five or seven li and take another dose. Take another dose at dawn.
