[Dan] Treatment for the "Five Extinctions" (Wu Jue), which include: 1) hanging (self-strangulation), 2) crushing by heavy objects, 3) drowning, 4) possession by evil spirits (Zhong E), and 5) postpartum complications. Use one liang of Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) ground into powder, formed into pills the size of beans, and inserted into the nasal cavity to cure. If the heart region remains warm, it can be treated within one day. (From *Zimu Milu*)
[Zhongjing] To rescue those who have died from hanging: even if the body has cooled from morning to evening, treatment is certainly effective; however, from evening to morning, it is difficult. This is likely due to the prevalence of Yin Qi at that time. Nevertheless, in summer when nights are shorter than days and the weather is hot, treatment should still be effective. It is also stated: if the epigastrium is still slightly warm, even after more than a day, treatment is possible. One should slowly untie the victim without cutting the rope, lay them flat on bedding placed above and below. One person stands on the victim's shoulders with their feet while pulling the hair taut, maintaining constant tension without letting it slacken. Another person presses and repeatedly rubs the chest. A third person massages and extends the arms and lower legs. If the body is already stiff, gently force flexion and extension while massaging the abdomen. After about the time it takes to cook a meal, although breath may return from the mouth and eyes open, continue pressing and supporting without releasing or exhausting the patient. Shortly after, provide small amounts of Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) or rice water to moisten the throat, stopping only when swallowing becomes possible. Additionally, have two people blow air into both ears using tubes; this method is most effective and ensures survival.
[Shan Shi] For hanging victims, never cut the rope. Use knees or hands wrapped in thick clothing to firmly press against the anus. Lift the victim to untie the rope, then place them down, rubbing the neck marks, stimulating the nasal cavity, and blowing into both ears. Wait until breath returns before releasing pressure; premature release of Qi makes rescue impossible.
*[Zhouhou Beiji Fang]* For those dead from hanging, calm the spirit and slowly untie the binding; do not cut the rope. Upon lifting, if the epigastrium is still warm, drip blood from a rooster's comb into the mouth to revive immediately. Use blood from a female rooster for males and a male rooster for females. Another prescription: take chicken excrement white (Ji Shi Bai) the size of a jujube, mix with half a cup of wine, and administer orally or nasally, which is particularly effective. *Qianjin Fang* uses indigo juice instead, with other methods remaining the same.
[Shan Shi] For sudden death caused by falling and crushing, rescue is possible as long as the heart region remains warm. Position the patient similarly to a monk sitting in meditation, have one person lower the head by holding the hair, and blow Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma) powder into the nasal cavity. If revived, administer a mixture of fresh ginger juice and sesame oil.
[Zhongjing] Prescription for rescuing drowning victims. Bury the body up to the head and feet in two shi of ash from the stove; once water flows out from the seven orifices, the patient will revive.
[Shan Shi] Place the drowning victim supine on a long bench, elevating the foot end of the bench by two bricks. Rub salt mixed with water onto the umbilicus until water drains naturally. Do not lift the victim upside down to shake out water. In these cases, if the heart region is slightly warm, rescue is possible.
Another method: Victims drowned for one night may still be revived. Crush Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus), wrap in cotton, and insert into the rectum. Water will discharge shortly after, reviving the patient.
[Shi Yi] Treatment for sleep paralysis (Yan Mi) or Zhong E (sudden collapse due to evil qi): grind Zaojiao (Gleditsiae Sinensis Fructus) into powder, form granules the size of mung beans, and blow into the nasal cavity. Sneezing indicates the restoration of Qi flow.
[Shan Shi] For those dead from sleep paralysis, do not approach and call out loudly. Instead, bite the heel forcefully and spit on the face. If unconscious, slightly move the position and call softly. Keep existing lamps lit; if none exist, absolutely do not light new ones. Also use Zaojiao powder to stimulate the nose.
*[Zhouhou Beiji Fang]* For sudden unresponsiveness during sleep, do not illuminate with fire, as this may cause death. Bite the edge of the thumbnail forcefully and spit on the face to revive. Alternatively, crush Jiucai (Chinese Chive) to extract juice and blow into the nasal cavity. In winter, use juice extracted from Jiugen (Allium Tuberosum Root) administered orally.
*[Ji Yan Fang]* Treatment for sudden Yan Meng (sleep paralysis). Grind Xionghuang (Realgar) into fine powder and blow into the nasal cavity using a tube.
