[Luo Tianyi] The ear is the gathering point of numerous meridians, the pathway through which Kidney Qi communicates, and belongs to the Foot-Shaoyin (Kidney) Meridian. If labor and fatigue damage Qi and Blood, Wind-Heat pathogen may enter the meridian vacuously. The pathogen follows Qi and Blood to ascend to the ear; when Heat accumulates, it generates pus, hence this condition is termed "Ting Er" (Stagnant Ear).
Hongmian San (Red Silk Powder): Treats Ting Er with purulent discharge.
Bai Fan (Alumen, 2 qian), Yanzhi (Carmine, 1 zi).
Grind these into a uniform powder. First, use a cotton-wrapped stick to thoroughly remove all pus and yellow fluid from the ear canal. Then, use another cotton-wrapped stick to introduce the medicine to the bottom of the ear, sprinkling it in so that the discharge dries. For robust individuals where accumulated Heat attacks upward, causing persistent purulent otorrhea unresponsive to treatment, administer Xionghuang Wan (Realgar Pill) with Wuyou San (Wu You Powder); after three or four bowel movements, the condition will resolve. Another single formula uses only Bai Fan ash blown into the ear, three times daily, yielding immediate effect.
Songhua San (Pine Flower Powder): Treats continuous purulent discharge from Ting Er; this formula is suitable.
Bai Fan (calcined to ash, 0.5 liang), Ma Bo (Cannabis Flower), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Songzhi (Pine Resin), Huayanzhi (Flower Carmine) (each 1 fen).
Pulverize and sieve these ingredients. Before each application, clean the ear thoroughly with cotton, then blow the powder into the ear for efficacy.
Bailian San (White Coptis Powder): Treats Ting Er with purulent discharge.
Bai Fan (calcined until dry), Wuzhegu (Sepiae Endoconcha), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, de-stamened), Longgu (Fossilia Ossis Mastodi et Scapulae) (each 1 liang).
Pulverize and sieve these ingredients. Wrap in cotton like a date pit, insert into the ear, and replace three times daily.
[Anonymous] Shexiang San (Musk Powder): Treats purulent discharge from the bottom of the ear in Ting Er.
Sangpiaoxiao (Bombyx Batryticatus, slow-roasted to retain nature, 1 piece), Shexiang (Moschus, 1 zi, ground separately).
Grind into a fine, uniform powder. Use half a zi per application, dusting into the ear. If pus is present, first dry it with a cotton swab. (Another method uses a small amount of Musk and a large amount of Huangdan (Lithargyrum), ground uniformly and inserted into the ear for immediate effect.)
[Worldly/Popular Formula] Treats uncontrollable purulent discharge from Ting Er. Roast Wubeizi (Galla Chinensis) until dry (1 liang), and calcinate Quanxie (Scorpio) to ash retaining its nature (3 qian). Grind into powder and sprinkle into the ear.
[Zhu Danxi] Treats ear erosion/ulceration. Grind Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus) into powder and apply dry.
[Luo Tianyi] Yuyuliang Wan (Yuyu Liang Pill): Treats Ting Er with purulent fluid, used for ear packing.
Yuyuliang (Hematitum, 1 liang, calcined seven times with Vinegar), Wuzheyugu (Sepiae Endoconcha), Fudimo (Carbon Plumbi), Fulonggan (Argillae Ustas), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 1 piece, peeled, raw use).
Pulverize and sieve these ingredients. Wrap in cotton like a soap bean, insert into the ear, and replace twice daily. If not cured, it indicates the presence of insects/worms in the ear.
[Worldly/Popular Formula] Sai'er Dan (Ear-Stopping Elixir): Treats obstruction of Qi pathways causing bilateral deafness.
Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, 1 cun), Badou (Crotonis Fructus, 1 seed, peeled), Quanxie (Scorpio, 1 piece).
Grind into powder, mix with scallion juice to form a paste like a date pit, wrap in cotton, and insert into the ear.
Treats hot ears with exudate.
Huashi (Talcum), Lanshigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Tianhuafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (each 1 liang).
Add a small amount of Naozi (Borneolum Syntheticum), grind together into powder, and sprinkle into the ear.
[Worldly/Popular Formula] Lixiao San (Instant Effect Powder): Treats continuous purulent discharge from Ting Er.
Chenju pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, burned on lamp wick to ash and powdered), Shexiang (Moschus, a little).
Mix the two ingredients uniformly. Take a small amount, first wipe the ear clean of pus with cotton, then apply the medicine.
Another prescription: Almond paste treats ear diseases or fluid discharge. Stir-fry Xingren (Pruni Semen) until black, grind into powder, mix with scallion juice to form a paste like a date pit, wrap in cotton, and insert into the ear.
