According to the *Liu Ren Shu* (Book of Vitality): For panting and shortness of breath caused by Yin syndromes, Fan Yin Dan (Return to Yin Pill) is the primary formula. If cold extremities are accompanied by panting, symptoms improve immediately upon ingestion. (See "Yin Toxin" for the formula.)
If a patient feels slightly thirsty and is given excessive water, leading to fluid retention and fullness/stiffness in the epigastrium, death often ensues; Wu Ling San (Five-Ingredient Powder with Poria) or Xian Xiong Wan (Trap-the-Chest Pill) should be used. (See "Thirst" and "Chest Binding" for formulas.)
In combined diseases of the Three Yang, symptoms include abdominal fullness, heaviness of the body, difficulty in turning over, numbness of the mouth and face with facial grime, delirium, and urinary incontinence. If sweating methods are misused, delirium worsens; if purgative methods are misused, sweating on the forehead and cold extremities occur.
If there is spontaneous sweating, Bai Hu Tang (White Tiger Decoction) is the primary formula.
Wind-Warmth disease presents with floating pulse, sweating, heaviness of the body, somnolence, and snoring nasal breathing. (Theory see "Wind-Warmth". It is advisable to use Wei Rui Tang from the *Liu Ren Shu*.)
Yangming disease presents with floating-tight pulse, bitter taste in the mouth, dry throat, abdominal fullness with panting, fever with sweating, aversion to cold absent, and heaviness of the body. Sweating methods, burning needle therapy, and purgative methods are contraindicated. (Theory see "Spontaneous Sweating."
Note: This syndrome is suitable for harmonizing treatment.)
Yangming disease with sweating, absence of aversion to cold, heaviness of the body, shortness of breath, abdominal fullness with panting, and tidal fever is suitable for Da Cheng Qi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction). (Theory see "Infrequent Stool.")
Water-wind disease with floating pulse, heaviness of the body, sweating, and aversion to wind is suitable for Fang Ji Huang Qi Tang (Stephania and Astragalus Decoction).
Fang Ji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix, 1 liang), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 liang), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 7 qian 5 fen), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix, de-rooted, 1 liang 1 qian).
All ingredients are chopped. Take 5 qian per dose, add 4 slices of fresh ginger and one jujube, decoct in 1.5 cups of water until 0.8 cup remains, and take warm. Repeat after some time. After ingestion, a sensation like insects crawling under the skin may occur, and the lower waist may feel cold as ice. Sit on a quilt afterwards, wrap another quilt around the waist and below, to induce slight sweating, which will cure the disease. Add Ma Huang (Ephedrae Herba, 0.5 liang) if panting occurs. Add Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 3 fen) if the stomach is disharmonious. Add Gui Zhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus, 3 fen) if qi rushes upward. Add Xi Xin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, 3 fen) if deep cold exists below.
Heat-stroke disease presenting with fever, aversion to cold, heavy and painful body, sweating with cold feet, empty pulse, and thirst is contraindicated for sweating, purging, and acupuncture. (Suitable for Gua Di San and Bai Hu Tang. Theory see "Heat-Stroke.")
Cold damage with floating-slow pulse, no body pain but heaviness, and absence of Shaoyin symptoms such as desire to sleep or vomiting/diarrhea, is suitable for Da Qing Long Tang (Major Green Dragon Decoction). If heaviness of the body and palpitations occur after purging, sweating methods are contraindicated; resolution occurs when spontaneous sweating happens. (Theory see "Palpitations.")
Yin-Yang Exchange disease presenting with heaviness of the body, shortness of breath, acute pulling sensation in the lower abdomen, spasm in the genitalia, qi rushing to the chest, and blurred vision is suitable for Shao Kun Tang (Burnt Underwear Decoction). (Theory see "Yin-Yang Exchange.")
Shaoyin disease with abdominal pain, difficulty in urination, heavy and painful limbs, and diarrhea is suitable for Zhen Wu Tang (True Warrior Decoction). (Theory see "Heaviness of Body.")
