Furthermore, for the elderly, those with deficient constitutions, and patients affected by wind pathogens who suffer from constipation due to a deficiency of body fluids (Jinye), it is appropriate to use lubricating herbs. Examples include Sesamum indicum seed (Huma), Cannabis sativa seed (Maren), and Donkey-hide gelatin (Ejiao). If one recklessly uses harsh purgatives to force bowel movements, it will cause the loss of body fluids and depletion of Qi and blood. Although there may be temporary relief, constipation will immediately return, and other diseases are bound to arise. In the past, Wang Shaofu suffered from this condition. Someone repeatedly used strong laxatives on him. Later, he developed Lung萎 (Fei Wei, pulmonary atrophy/withering) and coughed up pus and blood, ultimately dying from the obstruction of both urine and stool.
[Ben Cao Yan Yi] There are three types of postpartum disorders in women. Yu Mao (postpartum dizziness and vertigo accompanied by sweating) leads to excessive sweating; excessive sweating results in dry stools, making medication difficult to administer. Therefore, only Mazhi Suzi Zhou (Hemp Seed and Perilla Seed Porridge) is considered the safest and most appropriate remedy.
One method involves taking half a he of Perilla frutescens seed (Zisuzi) and half a he of Hemp seed (Damaizi). After washing, grind them extremely finely, add water and grind again to extract one cup of juice. Divide into two doses, cook into porridge, and consume. This porridge is not only suitable for postpartum use but is also generally appropriate for the elderly suffering from various deficiency patterns and wind-induced constipation. I once treated the mother of a patient, aged eighty-four, who suddenly experienced abdominal pain, headache, nausea, and anorexia. Dozens of physicians were summoned, all recommending formulas to tonify the Spleen, promote digestion, dispel wind, and clear the head and eyes. Although her symptoms improved after several days, she could not eat at all, causing great anxiety among her family. I analyzed that the previous prescriptions were incorrect. This case was precisely wind-induced constipation in the elderly, where Zang-Fu organ Qi stagnation accumulated in the chest, causing abdominal distension, nausea, and lack of appetite. When the rebellious Qi ascended to the vertex, it caused headache and mental cloudiness. If the Zang-Fu Qi flow becomes smooth, all ailments will disappear. I instructed her to consume two bowls of this porridge. Subsequently, her Qi unblocked, and she first passed more than ten hard fecal pellets resembling peppercorns, followed by gradual normalization of bowel movements. She recovered without further medication.
[Zhu Danxi] For postpartum constipation with abdominal distension, accompanied by shortness of breath and inability to sit or lie down comfortably, use Wheat bran (Maifan) powder. Administer one he mixed with wine. The effect is miraculous. (From Bingbu Shouji.)
[Zhu Danxi] A woman suffered from Spleen pain, which later progressed to obstruction of both urine and stool. This was due to Phlegm obstructing the Middle Jiao and Qi accumulating in the Upper Jiao. Treatment involved Er Chen Tang (Two-Cured Decoction) added with Akebia stem (Mutong). After the first dose, she vomited; the dregs were re-decocted and administered, leading to improvement.
[Shanting] For obstruction of both urine and stool: Burn Gleditsia sinensis fruit (Saojiao) to ash, make into powder, and take with rice gruel.
[Ben Cao Yan Yi] Che Gou San (Cart-Dog Powder) treats severe, chronic obstruction of both urine and stool causing extreme distress.
Use seven fresh Plantago asiatica seeds (Cheqianke - literally "cart passenger," referring to the plantain seed/plant), and seven earth dogs (Lougu, i.e., mole crickets; those living in soil are called Tu Gou, those in water are Shui Gou). Dry these two substances on a new tile until brittle, grind into powder, and take with a concentrated decoction of the bark of Polygonum cuspidatum root (Huzhang tree bark facing southeast). The efficacy is divine. Huzhang is Polygonum cuspidatum root; its nature strongly promotes urination and resolves summer-heat toxicity. (Another theory states: for male patients, use the head of Plantago asiatica and the body of the mole cricket; for female patients, use the head of the mole cricket and the body of Plantago asiatica. Both methods are effective.)
[Hai Zang] Huisheng Shen Gao (Life-Restoring Divine Ointment) treats Yin-pattern obstruction of both urine and stool, as well as various miscellaneous diseases presenting with Yin-cold patterns causing such obstruction. This treatment is indicated for critical cases where obstruction has persisted for several days. It should not be used for non-emergency conditions.
Oyster shell (Muli), aged starch powder (Chenfen), Dried ginger (Ganjiang, processed), each 1 liang.
Grind all ingredients into a fine powder. For male patients, mix with female saliva, warm in the palm of the hand, and apply tightly over both testes until sweating occurs, indicating recovery. For female patients, mix with male saliva, warm in the palm of the hand, and apply tightly over both breasts until sweating occurs, indicating recovery. This is because the testes and breasts are the roots of men and women respectively, corresponding to the Kan and Li trigrams.
A surging pulse, hot skin, abdominal distension, obstruction of anterior and posterior orifices, and mental confusion constitute the "Five Excess" (Wu Shi) pattern. (See full text in the chapter on treating Deficiency and Excess patterns.)
[Zhu Danxi] Navel Covering Method (Yan Qi Fa) treats obstruction of both urine and stool.
Take 1-2 stalks of Scallion with roots, a piece of Ginger with soil attached, 21 grains of Prepared soybean (Danshidou), and 2 spoons of Salt. Pound them together into a paste, heat it, and apply it to the navel. Secure firmly with cloth. After some time, Qi will penetrate and passage will naturally open. If not, replace with another cake.
[Sang] For obstruction of both urine and stool: Dada (B-32) acupoint (Moxibustion 7 fen).
[Dong Yuan] For difficulty in urination and defecation: Huangang (Located 2 cun below Xiaochangshu BL-27, between transverse folds, moxa); Shuidao ST-28 (20 moxa cones); Rongwei (Four points on each side of the spine, 1.8 cun lateral to the midline, 3 cun below the waist-eye level, 4 cun apart from each other, totaling four points on both sides; moxa 10 to 100 cones. Note: Some sources state the exact location of this point is unclear).
[Jia Yi Jing] When the Triple Warmer (San Jiao) is constrained, causing obstruction of both urine and stool, Shuidao ST-28 is the primary point for treatment.
