[Yun] Gegen Tang (Kudzu Decoction) treats Zi Xian (Eclampsia of Pregnancy) occurring at the month of delivery, caused by contracting Wind pathogen, suddenly leading to mental confusion and loss of consciousness, vomiting, dizziness, and collapse.
Gegen (Radix Puerariae), Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae, heart removed), Mudanpi (Cortex Moutan Radicis), Fangfeng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Chuanxiong (Rhizoma Chuanxiong), Baifuling (Poria with Hostwood), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi Cassiae), Zexie (Rhizoma Alismatis), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis, each 2 liang), Duhuo (Radix Angelicae Pubescentis), Shigao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Renshen (Radix Ginseng, each 3 liang).
The above herbs are cut into small pieces, boiled in 9 sheng of water until 3 sheng remain, divided into two doses, taken warm. Beimu facilitates childbirth; if not yet near term, Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae) may be substituted.
[Danxi] Treated a woman pregnant for six months who suffered from epilepsy-like convulsions, with arms and legs extended and flailing, face purple-black, eyes closed with saliva flowing, unconscious for half an hour before waking. Physicians administered Zhenling Dan (Vibrant Spirit Pill) over fifty doses, but symptoms persisted intermittently without reduction. She recovered spontaneously only upon delivery, giving birth to a healthy daughter. The following year, her husband suspected toxicity from the pills and sought treatment. Her pulse was wiry on superficial pressure, choppy on deep pressure, and deep, solid, and rapid when pressed to the bone. It was February or March, and since no convulsive symptoms were present, medication was withheld. Anticipating recurrence in May based on previous history, treatment was planned for that time. By mid-May, the condition indeed recurred during the Wu and Si hours. He prescribed his self-formulated Fangfeng Tongsheng San (Saposhnikovia Unblocking Heroic Powder) using raw Gancao, increased Tao Ren (Semen Persicae), and reduced Honghua (Flos Carthami), administered orally or inducing emesis. After four to five doses, the illness gradually subsided, manifesting as scabies before complete resolution.
[Da] To treat Zi Xian, use Su Sha (Fructus Amomi Rotundus) powder, taken with wine, 2 qian per dose. (See "Calming the Fetus" for details.)
The disease referred to here is Ji Bing (Spasm Disease/Chong), characterized by locked jaw (Jin Jing) and opisthotonos (Jiao Gong Fan Zhang).
[Danxi] Ji Bing generally resembles epilepsy but is more deficient in nature, thus requiring tonification. It is often due to Qi deficiency with Fire and Phlegm; Ren Shen and Zhu Li (Bambusa Textilis Caulis Juice) are suitable, while Wind-dispelling drugs should be avoided.
[Wuming Shi] This syndrome often results from blood loss, leaving tendons and vessels un-nourished, allowing pathogens to invade. Thus, it is seen after excessive sweating or purgation in Cold Damage, in patients with sores, and postpartum.
[Danxi] A man in his twenties, after acne scars fell off, suddenly developed locked jaw, rigid limbs unable to flex, and intermittent periumbilical pain accompanied by profuse cold sweat, which ceased when pain subsided. His pulse was extremely wiry, tight, and rapid. Knowing he led a hard life, I surmised labor damaged Blood, mountain living exposed him to Wind-Cold, and the acne further depleted Blood. Treatment required acrid-warm herbs to nourish Blood and acrid-cool herbs to disperse Wind. Dang Gui Shen (Body of Radix Angelicae Sinensis) and Shao Yao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) served as Sovereign; Chuan Xiong, Qing Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae Viride), and Gou Teng (Uncaria Rhynchophylla) as Ministers; Bai Zhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae), Chen Pi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), and Gan Cao as Assistants; Gui Zhi (Ramulus Cinnamomi Cassiae), Mu Xiang (Radix Aucklandiae), and Huang Lian (Rhizoma Coptidis) as Guides. With a little Honghua, twelve doses cured him.
[Hai Zang] Shenzhu Jia Qiang Huo Ma Huang Tang (Atractylodes Formula plus Notopterygium and Ephedra Decoction) treats Gang Ji (Yang Spasm: anhidrosis and aversion to cold) to resolve exterior and promote sweating. (Shenzhu formula see Cold Damage Taiyin.)
Baizhu Jia Guixin Huangqi Baizhu Tang (Atractylodes Formula plus Cinnamon Twig and Astragalus Decoction) treats Rou Ji (Yin Spasm: diaphoresis and absence of aversion to cold) to resolve exterior and stop sweating. (Baizhu formula see Cold Damage Taiyang.)
For Taiyang-Yangming involvement, add Chuanxiong and Jingjie Sui (Herba Schizonepetae). For Zhengyang Yangming, add Qianghuo (Rhizoma Notopterygii) and Jiu Dahuang (Rhubarb processed with wine). For Shaoyang-Yangming, add Fangfeng and Chaihu Gen (Radix Bupleuri).
If heat is in the exterior, add Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae). If cold is in the exterior, add Guizhi, Huangqi (Radix Astragali), and Fuzi (Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata). If heat is in the interior, add Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei). If cold is in the interior, add Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Secati), Jiangliangjiang (Rhizoma Galangalis), and Fuzi.
For these meridians, cold and heat must be distinguished by pulse.
Fangfeng Danggui San (Saposhnikovia and Angelica Powder)
Fangfeng, Danggui, Chuanxiong, Dihuang (Radix Rehmanniae Preparata, each 1 liang).
Cut into pieces, take 1 liang per dose, boil in 3 zhan of water until 2 zhan remain, take warm.
[Zhongjing] The *Huoren* text describes Ji treatments, also found in the Exterior-Interior Yin-Yang section. Taiyang disease with fever, anhidrosis, and aversion to cold is named Gang Ji. Taiyang disease with fever, diaphoresis, and no aversion to cold is named Rou Ji.
[Zhongjing] Gegen Tang treats Taiyang disease with anhidrosis, decreased urination, Qi rushing to the chest, locked jaw preventing speech, indicating impending Gang Ji. Gegen Tang is indicated. (Formula see Cold Damage.)
If fever, anhidrosis, and aversion to cold are present, it is Gang Ji; Mahuang Jia Duhuo Fangfeng Tang (Ephedra plus Notopterygium and Saposhnikovia Decoction) is appropriate.
Mahuang (nodes removed), Guizhi (each 1 liang), Shaoyao (3 liang), Gancao (0.5 liang), Duhuo, Fangfeng (each 1 liang).
Cut finely, take 1 liang per dose, boil in 2 zhong of water until 1.5 zhong remain, take warm.
[Zhongjing] Gualou Guizhi Tang treats Taiyang disease with full symptomatology, body stiffness, yet pulse is deep and slow, indicating Rou Ji. (Hai Zang treats diaphoretic cases as Rou Ji.)
Gualou Gen (Radix Trichosanthis), Guizhi (3 liang), Gancao (2 liang), Shengjiang (3 liang), Dazao (12 fruits), Shaoyao (2 liang).
Boil six ingredients in 9 sheng of water until 3 sheng remain, divide into three warm doses. Induce slight sweating; if none occurs, drink congee shortly after dosing to assist.
[Hai Zang] If fever, spontaneous sweating, and no aversion to cold are present, it is Rou Ji; Guizhi Jia Chuanxiong Fangfeng Tang (Cinnamon Twig plus Chuanxiong and Saposhnikovia Decoction) is appropriate.
Guizhi, Shaoyao, Shengjiang (each 1.5 liang), Gancao, Fangfeng, Chuanxiong (each 1 liang), Dazao (6 fruits).
Cut finely, take 1 liang per dose, boil in 3 zhan of water until 1.5 zhan remain, strain and take warm.
Both Gang Ji and Rou Ji can be treated with Xiao Xuming Tang (Minor Continuation of Life Decoction). (Formula see Stroke Section; remove dregs and add fresh ginger juice.) Modifications to Xiao Xuming Tang: For Rou Ji with sweating, remove Mahuang. In summer or with heat, reduce Guizhi by half. In winter and early spring, remove Huangqin.
[Qianjin] Xuming Tang treats stroke with hemiplegia, limb spasm, inability to flex/extend, cold body, mental confusion or dementia, rigidity, muteness, death or survival, incoherent speech, opisthotonos, appetite changes, and bowel/bladder dysfunction.
Renshen, Guixin, Danggui, Duhuo, Huangqin, Ganjiang (processed), Gancao (roasted, each 7.5 qian), Shigao (1.5 liang), Xingren (40 seeds).
Cut nine ingredients, boil in 9 sheng of water until 3 sheng remain, divide into three warm doses, twice daily, induce sweating. Add Mahuang if anhidrotic.
[Zhongjing] Gang Ji presents with chest fullness, locked jaw, inability to lie flat, leg cramps, and teeth grinding; Da Chengqi Tang (Major Order the Qi Decoction) may be given. (Formula see Cold Damage.)
[Zihe] Wife of Lord Lu Yuyu, over thirty, suffered wind convulsions, vertigo, opisthotonos, and anorexia for days. Physicians treated as fright-wind, hidden-wind, or wind-epilepsy using Tian Nanxing (Rhizoma Arisaematis), Xionghuang (Realgar), Tianma (Rhizoma Gastrodiae), and Wufu (Prepared Aconite) with no effect. Dai Ren said: All wind tremors and vertigo belong to Liver Wood. Flexion and extension movements are functions of Wind. Yang moves, Yin stills. Excessive Fire controls Metal; Metal deficiency fails to balance Wood, causing Liver Wood to flourish and become diseased. He induced expectoration of 2-3 sheng of wind-phlegm, then purged with cold agents ten-plus times. Finally, he punctured Baihui (GV20) with multiple needles, releasing one cup of blood, resulting in immediate cure.
[Hai Zang] If unresolved after sweating, with alternating calmness and agitation, fixed gaze, locked jaw, alternating chills and fever, and wiry pulse, it is Shaoyang Wind Ji; Chaihu Jia Fangfeng Tang (Bupleurum plus Saposhnikovia Decoction) is appropriate.
Chaihu (1 liang), Renshen (5 qian), Banxia (processed, 6 qian), Huangqin (5 qian), Shengjiang, Gancao (each 6.5 qian), Fangfeng (1 liang), Zao (3 fruits).
Cut, take 1 liang per dose, boil in 3 zhan of water until 1.5 zhan remain, strain and take warm.
If excessive sweating leads to fever, head/face shaking, sudden locked jaw, and opisthotonos, it involves Taiyang and Yangming; dispel Wind and nourish Blood with Fangfeng Danggui San. (Formula see Main Principles Section.)
Yang Ji is discussed in the Exterior-Interior section. Zhongjing stated Ji always presents with body heat and cold feet, but being Yang-type, there is no reversal cold (Jue Ni).
[Baiyi] Treats wind-stroke with rigid body unable to flex/extend. Take yellow-white Sophora bark, cut, boil in 6 sheng of wine or water until 2 sheng remain, strain and drink.
[Qianjin] Cang Gong Danggui Tang treats thief-wind with locked jaw and opisthotonos.
Danggui, Fangfeng (each 7.5 qian), Duhuo (1.5 liang), Fuzi (1 piece), Xixin (0.5 liang), Mahuang (1.25 liang).
Cut, boil in 5 sheng wine and 3 sheng water until 3 sheng remain, take 1 sheng. If mouth is closed, administer via cheek. First dose restores consciousness, second causes slight sweat, third heavy sweat.
[Huoren] Bayi Baizhu San (Eight-Ingredient Atractylodes Powder) treats Yin Ji: facial swelling within 1-2 days, cold extremities, tendon spasm, anhidrosis, fearing internal injury of Yin Qi.
Baizhu, Fuling (Poria), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae) (each 0.5 liang), Guixin (0.3 fen), Mahuang (0.5 liang), Jiangliangjiang (0.1 fen), Qianghuo (0.5 liang), Fuzi (0.3 fen).
Powder, take 4 qian per dose with 1 large zhan of water and 5 slices of ginger, boil until 0.5 zhan remain, strain and take warm anytime.
[Hai Zang] If fever with deep, thin pulse indicates Taiyin involvement, abdominal pain will occur; Guizhi Jia Shaoyao Fangfeng Fangji Tang (Cinnamon Twig plus Peony, Saposhnikovia, and Stephania Decoction) is appropriate. Also Xiao Xuming Tang.
Guizhi (1.5 liang), Fangfeng, Fangji (Radix Stephaniae Tetrandrae) (each 1 liang), Shaoyao (2 liang), Shengjiang (1.5 liang), Dazao (6 fruits).
Cut, take 1 liang per dose, boil in 3 zhan of water until 1.5 zhan remain, strain and take warm.
[Huoren] Fuzi San (Aconite Powder) treats Yin Ji: cold extremities, tendon spasm, continuous sweating, neck stiffness, head shaking, locked jaw.
Guixin (3 qian), Fuzi (processed, 1 liang), Baizhu (1 liang), Chuanxiong (3 qian), Duhuo (0.5 liang).
Powder, take 3 qian per dose with 1 zhong of water and 1 jujube, boil until 0.5 zhan remain, take warm.
Guixin Baizhu Tang (Cinnamon Twig and Atractylodes Decoction) treats Yin Ji: cold extremities, tendon spasm, continuous sweating.
Baizhu, Fangfeng, Gancao, Guixin, Chuanxiong, Fuzi.
Powder, take 5 qian per dose with 2 zhong of water, 5 slices of ginger, 2 jujubes, boil until 0.7 zhan remain, strain and take warm.
Fuzi Fangfeng San (Aconite and Saposhnikovia Powder) treats Yin Ji: eyes closed, face covered, cold extremities, tendon spasm, continuous sweating.
Baizhi (Radix Angelicae Dahuricae, 1 liang), Fangfeng, Gancao (each 0.3 fen), Guixin (0.5 liang), Fuzi (0.3 fen), Ganjiang (0.3 fen), Chaihu (1.5 liang), Fuling (0.3 fen), Wuweizi (1 liang).
Powder, take 3 qian per dose with 2 zhan of water and 4 slices of ginger, boil, strain, take warm.
[Hai Zang] Excessive sweating causes Ji. Body heat, cold feet, neck stiffness, aversion to cold, hot head, swollen face, red eyes, head shaking, locked jaw, opisthotonos indicate Taiyang Ji. Head lowered, looking down, limbs pulling, elbows/knees touching indicate Yangming Ji. One eye deviated or unilateral limb spasms indicate Shaoyang Ji. Sweating, stopping sweating, harmonizing, purging—treat according to the meridian—to ensure cure.
Taiyang Ji is exterior; anhidrosis requires sweating, diaphoresis requires stopping sweating. Yangming Ji is interior; requires purging. Shaoyang Ji is half-exterior/half-interior; requires harmonizing. This is "treating according to the meridian."
[Danxi] Lady Lu, due to anger, developed rigid limbs and bound fingers. Left pulse wiry and empty; right pulse wiry, large, strong, and slightly firm. This is Wind-Wood attacking Spleen-Earth. Quickly purge Liver Qi, assist Lung-Metal, and tonify Spleen-Earth Yin.
Huanglian (2 qian), Tian Nanxing, Baizhu, Renshen, Huangqin, Tianma, Chuanxiong, Mutong (Caulis Akebiae), Chenpi, Qingpi (each 0.5 qian), Gancao (0.1 fen).
One dose, boil to 1 zhan, add ginger juice until spicy, boil again, take hot.
Lung transferring Heat to Kidney transmits as Rou Ji. (Full text see Disease Transmission.)
Qi Yun (Climate Patterns) has three types: 1. Wind. Classic says: Jueyin in Earthly Branch, guest excess causes joint stiffness, internal Ji rigidity/spasm, external inconvenience. Also: All sudden rigidity belongs to Wind. 2. Dampness. Classic says: All Ji neck stiffness belongs to Dampness. Wang Bing's note: Yang depressed internally, Yin moving externally. 3. Cold wrapping Heat. Classic says: Excessive Fire is called Hexi; its era matches Upper Water and Proper Fire, disease is Ji. Cold ruling Heaven binds Fire inside, meaning Yin/Yang depression internally, Yin moving externally.
[Popular] Treat opisthotonos. Use water from placenta bottle, apply to patient's lips with goose feather for cure.
[Zhouhou] Treats wind-stroke body rigidity. Cut Zhi Pi (Pericarpium Aurantii) tree bark 1 sheng, soak in 2 sheng wine overnight. Drink 0.5 sheng warm wine daily; repeat when finished. (Zhi Shi comes from Citrus trifoliata, dispels Wind/Damp.)
[Qianjin] Treats locked jaw, limb paralysis, body rigidity. Take Fulonggan (Volatile Dragon Liver - calcined earth) 5 sheng, mix with 7 sheng water, stir, extract juice, drink.
[Zhongjing] Patient with body heat, cold feet, neck stiffness, aversion to cold, occasional head heat, red face/eyes, isolated head trembling, sudden locked jaw, opisthotonos suffers from Ji disease. (*Huoren* notes: Exterior symptoms resemble Cold Damage, but pulse is deep/slow/wiry/thin, and neck/back rigidity differs.) Taiyang disease with excessive sweating causes Ji. Purging Wind disease causes Ji; re-sweating causes spasm. Ji pulse is tight like a string, running straight up and down.
[Maijing] Ji patients have deep, firm pulses running straight up and down.
[Wuming Shi] All Ji pulses are deep, sunken, wiry, and tight.
