[Qian Jin Fang] Formula for treating sudden heat-induced cough.
Xingren (Apricot Seed), Zisuzi (Perilla Fruit, one sheng), Chenpi (Dried Tangerine Peel, one liang), Chaihu (Bupleurum Root, four liang).
The above herbs are cut into pieces, boiled in ten dou of water until reduced to three sheng, and divided into three doses.
[Shan Jia Qing Gong] For sudden cough. Clean white clam shells, grind into fine powder, and take with rice gruel broth.
[Bencao Yanyi] Treatment for sudden cough.
Pishuang (Realgar/Orpiment mixture, typically Orpiment in this context, one qian), BaiFan (Alum, one liang, processed by water flotation, finely ground).
First place the Pishuang in a tea cup, then cover it with the BaiFan powder. Calcine over fire into a powder, mix with Wumei (Mume Fruit) pulp to form pills the size of mung beans, coated with Zhusha (Cinnabar). Take two pills each time, washed down with Zisu Tang (Perilla Decoction).
[Qian Jin Fang] Treatment for sudden cough. Crush Baibu (Stemona Root) vines to extract natural juice, mix equally with honey, boil into a paste, and swallow slowly.
[Zhu Danxi] For chronic cough caused by wind-cold invading the lungs, this method is indispensable. Nanxing (Arisaema Rhizome), Kuanhua (Coltsfoot Flower), Eguan Shi (Gorgonian Coral Stone), Foer Cao (Petasites Leaf), Xionghuang (Realgar) are ground into powder and mixed with Ai Ye (Mugwort Floss). Place a thick slice of fresh ginger on the tongue, then burn the mugwort on top, ensuring the smoke enters the throat. Another version excludes Foer Cao and uses Yujin (Curcuma Radix) instead. Another prescription: Eguan Shi and Xionghuang, each one-and-a-half fen, ground separately; Kuanhua and Foer Cao, each one-and-a-half fen, ground separately. Take a square piece of paper, four or five cun wide. Apply egg white to the center, leaving one cun margin uncoated on all sides. Sprinkle the Eguan Shi and Xionghuang powder onto the egg white, then cover with the Kuanhua and Foer Cao powders. Roll the paper into a tube starting from the uncoated edge using an arrow shaft, secure the side with paste, remove the shaft, and dry. To use, hold the paper tube in the mouth, ignite one end, inhale the smoke, fill the throat, and swallow. Continue until the tube is burned out, then drink two or three sips of tea to suppress the sensation.
[Cui Shi] Moxibustion/fumigation method for chronic cough. Each morning, take Kuanhua (Coltsfoot Flower) and a few good eggs. Moisten the flowers with honey, place them in an iron pan with a capacity of one sheng. Drill a hole in a clay bowl, insert a small bamboo tube or pen tube into the hole. The tube should be slightly longer. Fit the bowl onto the pan, sealing the junction and insertion point with flour paste to prevent leakage. Place charcoal fire under the pan. After a short while, smoke from the Coltsfoot will emerge from the bamboo tube. Hold the tube in the mouth, inhale the smoke, and swallow. If chest discomfort occurs, lift the head and pinch the tube end with fingers to prevent smoke leakage. Stop when smoke is exhausted. Perform this once every five days. On the sixth day, eat a full meal of lamb wontons for a permanent cure. (Alternative method: Use a spouted clay pot to burn the medicine, cover the spout, and inhale smoke directly from the spout, which is even more effective.)
[Zhang Jiegu] Zhike Tang (Citrus Aurantium Decoction) treats chronic phlegm-cough with chest and diaphragm obstruction, often accompanied by upper jiao heat.

Sheng Banxia Tang (Raw Pinellia Decoction). Use Jiangzhi Banxia (Ginger-processed Pinellia Rhizome) sliced. Take three-and-a-half qian per dose, add one-and-a-half zhan of water and five slices of ginger. Decoct to one zhan. Take after meals, two to three times daily. After two to three days, switch to Zhike Wan (Citrus Aurantium Pills) until phlegm is eliminated. Commentary: First eliminate phlegm-qi in the chest, then remove phlegm above the diaphragm. Follow with Zhizhu Wan (Atractylodes and Immature Bitter Orange Pills) to treat both beginning and end, completely resolving qi stagnation so phlegm does not recur.

Make pills with Shenqu paste. Take thirty pills with Ginger Decoction. First give San'ao Tang plus Huangqin and Baizhu for two doses. At night, give Xiaowei Dan (Minor Stomach Pill) ten pills to stir up phlegm.
Jiegu Kuangqi Wan (Jiegu Coltsfoot Qi-Calming Pill) treats chronic cough with edema. Luoshi Zican San (Luoshi Purple Ginseng Powder) uses Gejie (Gecko). Bencao Yanyi states: Gecko is effective for chronic cough.
Madouling Wan (Aristolochia Decoction Pill) treats persistent asthma and cough for many years, with great efficacy.

Except for Badou and Xingren which are ground separately, grind the rest into fine powder. Make pills with Saojiao Gao (Tamarisk Gum), size of Sophora seeds, coated with Xionghuang (Realgar). Take ten pills before bed with Wumei Tang (Mume Decoction), stopping when bowel movement occurs.
[Qian Jin Fang] Treats thirty-year cough, whether triggered by drinking or spontaneous, including cold-induced cough.
Xixin (Asarum Root), Kuan Dong Hua (Coltsfoot Flower), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia Root), Ziwan (Aster Root, three liang each), Lilu (Veratrum Root, two liang), Chuanjiao (Sichuan Pepper, five he).
Cut the six herbs. Place Lilu first in a copper vessel, then Ziwan, then Xixin, then Kuan Dong Hua, then Chuanjiao. Intersperse with one hundred large dates. Add twelve dou of water, simmer gently until liquid is exhausted. Remove dates, dry them. Take half a date at dawn. If ineffective, take one date the next morning. Stop when the chest feels warm. For strong individuals desiring expectoration, increase dosage slightly to induce vomiting of pus-bound phlegm. Do not consume cold drinks or food after vomiting. Stop medication when cough ceases. Resume eating only when the medicinal effect subsides; otherwise, it may cause continuous vomiting.
Formula for intractable chronic cough.
