According to the *Huoren Shu* (Book of Living People): Fever accompanied by aversion to cold, headache, and body ache with a floating and tight pulse occurring before the Summer Solstice constitutes **Wenbing** (Warm Disease). **Shanghan** (Cold Damage) contracted in spring is referred to as **Wenbing**. If one was injured by cold in winter, and the condition is mild, it manifests as **Wenbing** before the Summer Solstice; this occurs due to the influence of the warm qi of spring. The treatment of **Wenbing** differs from **Shanghan** in winter and **Rebing** (Heat Disease) in summer, because the heat intensity is lighter. **Shengma Jieji Tang** (Ephedra and Cimicifuga Decoction for Relieving Muscle Layer) is the most effective formula. If the heat is more severe, **Xiaochaihu Tang** (Minor Bupleurum Decoction) is the primary prescription. If there is no thirst but slight external fever, use **Xiaochaihu Tang** added with **Guizhi** (Cinnamon Twig). If coughing is present, use **Xiaochaihu Tang** added with **Wuweizi** (Schisandra Berry). If there is irritability, thirst, a solid pulse, and constipation, use **Dachaihu Tang** (Major Bupleurum Decoction) to mildly purge the bowels; if there is empty irritability, administer **Zhuye Tang** (Bamboo Leaf Decoction) sequentially.
Zhang Zhongjing stated that **Wenbing** presents with high fever and no aversion to cold, whereas the *Huoren Shu* states that **Wenbing** presents with fever and aversion to cold. Since they differ, Zhang Zhongjing’s view should be considered correct.
**Shengma Jieji Tang**: Treats headache and high fever caused by **Shanghan**, **Wenbing**, and epidemic diseases.
**Gegen** (Puerariae Radix, 1 liang), **Huangqin** (Scutellariae Radix), **Shaoyao** (Paeoniae Radix, each 0.5 liang), **Gancao** (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried), **Guixin** (Cinnamomi Ramulus, each 1 fen), **Mahuang** (Ephedrae Herba, 3 fen, nodes removed, soaked in hot water).
Crush the herbs. Take 5 qian per dose, add 1.5 zhan of water and one jujube, boil until reduced to 0.8 zhan. Administer three times daily. If after three or four days the disease persists and the pulse remains floating, re-administer the medicine to induce sweating. If the pulse is deep and solid, purgation is indicated.
Yun Qizi said: When **Shanghan** does not resolve after sweating or purgation, and the pathogen has passed through the meridians (**Guojing**) yet symptoms persist, this is also classified as **Wenbing**. The classics state: The pulse of **Wenbing** moves through the various meridians; without knowing which meridian is affected, treat according to the location of the meridian involved. For example, if **Taiyang** syndrome persists after sweating/purgation and the pulse at both cun and chi positions is floating, it is **Taiyang Wenbing**. If there is body heat and eye pain persisting after sweating/purgation, and the pulse at both cun and chi positions is long, it is **Yangming Wenbing**. If there is hypochondriac pain persisting after sweating/purgation, and the pulse at both cun and chi positions is wiry, it is **Shaoyang Wenbing**. If there is abdominal fullness and dry throat persisting after sweating/purgation, and the pulse at both cun and chi positions is deep and fine, it is **Taiyin Wenbing**. If there is dry mouth and tongue with thirst persisting after sweating/purgation, and the pulse at both cun and chi positions is deep, it is **Shaoyin Wenbing**. If there is irritability, fullness, and retraction of the genitals persisting after sweating/purgation, and the pulse at both cun and chi positions is faint and slow, it is **Jueyin Wenbing**. Therefore, select treatments based on the meridian and manage symptoms accordingly. If macules appear, this is termed **Wendu** (Warm Toxin).
