Chen XX from Tianjin, aged 38, suffered from epilepsy (Xian Feng) complicated by cerebral congestion.
Etiology: Due to a pre-existing excess of Liver Fire, and his role as an English lecturer at a school where he delivered daily speeches for extended periods. Both mental exertion and physical labor were excessive, leading to this condition.
Symptoms: When he came to the clinic for consultation, he only mentioned suffering from epilepsy, which occurred either every few days or every ten-plus days. The attacks invariably happened at night without his conscious awareness; he only knew they had occurred because he woke up with pain and bite marks on the edges of his tongue. On such days, he would feel mentally confused and lethargic, with body soreness and lassitude. His pulse was excessively wiry and hard in both left and right positions. I asked him if he experienced heat or pain in the head, or accompanied dizziness. He replied that all three symptoms were present in his head, but he assumed they were secondary to the epilepsy and thus did not mention them. I said: Incorrect. You are suffering from epilepsy complicated by cerebral congestion.
Diagnosis: According to the pathology of epilepsy, it is caused by the brain marrow and nerves losing their normal control, resulting in abnormal changes. If cerebral congestion is severe, it often compresses the brain marrow and nerves, causing them to lose their normal function. Since this case involves both epilepsy and cerebral congestion, the priority for treatment must be to address the cerebral congestion first.
Prescription: Treated with my formulated Zhen Gan Xi Feng Tang (Sedate the Liver and Extinguish Wind Decoction). Because of the concurrent epilepsy, three large whole Centipede (Quan Wugong, Scolopendra) were added. Zhen Gan Xi Feng Tang is originally my primary formula for treating cerebral congestion, while Centipede is a key herb for treating epilepsy.
Follow-up Visit: After taking the previous prescription for ten doses, the heat, pain, and dizziness in the head were eliminated. However, the pulse remained forceful. Slight modifications were made to the original formula, and after another ten doses, the pulse became peaceful and normal. Subsequently, the epilepsy was treated.
Prescription: Treated with my formulated Yu Xian Dan (Cure Epilepsy Pill), taken twice daily, each time washed down with decoction made from five qian of raw Huai Shan Yao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma, Chinese Yam).
Outcome: After more than two months of medication, the old disease did not recur. Medication was then discontinued, and the epilepsy was completely cured.
