A woman surnamed Xu from Tianjin, aged eighteen, suffered from metrorrhagia (blood flooding).
Etiology Due to family discord, which stirred up Liver Fire, leading to continuous lower bleeding.
Symptoms Initially, the bleeding was profuse. After repeated medical treatments, although the blood loss decreased after more than a month, it ultimately did not stop. The pulse was soggy and weak, with a frequency approaching five beats per breath cycle (approx. 90-100 bpm). There was shortness of breath and qi deficiency; she felt that during exhalation, slight effort was required, and she could not follow the natural rhythm of breathing. She experienced tidal fever in the afternoon, though not severe.
Diagnosis This is sinking of the Great Qi in the chest, accompanied by deficiency of the Yin aspect. Because the Great Qi is sinking, there is effortful exhalation and continuous bleeding; because the Yin aspect is deficient, there is tidal fever in the afternoon. It is appropriate to tonify the Great Qi, nourish the True Yin, and simultaneously use herbs that lift and astringe to achieve a cure.
