A careful examination of Case No. 111 published in the *Shaoxing Medical and Pharmaceutical Weekly Report* reveals that the patient's hiccups (spasmodic contraction of the diaphragm) remained incurable because the pathology involved both deficiency and Qi stagnation. However, observing that symptoms worsen after fullness and alleviate during hunger indicates that the etiology is predominantly due to Qi stagnation rather than deficiency. If one can ensure that there is not even a trace of Qi stagnation, the hiccups will cease. Once the stagnation is resolved and hiccups stop, the physiological transformation and circulation of Qi (Qi Hua) will flow freely; even if there is some underlying deficiency, it will gradually dissipate on its own. The most difficult aspect lies in regulating Qi stagnation within a context of deficiency. It is essential that the prescribed herbs do not impair the physiological transformation of Qi in the slightest. Only when every fraction of stagnation is resolved can the physiological transformation of Qi recover by a corresponding fraction, thereby achieving efficacy. In my work *Yixue Zhongzhong Canxi Lu*, Chapter on Medical Formulas, I recorded the *Weisheng Fangyi Baodan* (Health Protection and Epidemic Prevention Precious Pill), originally formulated for treating acute cholera. Regardless of whether the condition was caused by cold or heat, it has proven effective upon repeated trials. Later, a Mr. Zhao from Shenyang suffered from severe Warm Disease (acute febrile disease caused by warm pathogenic factors). He was carried to the clinic seeking medical attention. After several days of treatment, his condition improved, but he suddenly developed persistent hiccups day and night, which did not respond to other medications. Recalling that *Weisheng Fangyi Baodan* excels at promoting Qi movement and resolving stagnation, I administered fifty pills at once, and the hiccups ceased immediately. A few days later, a Mr. Chen presented with hiccups lasting over ten days, resulting in loss of sleep and appetite, extreme mental fatigue, and near exhaustion. He was also treated with *Weisheng Fangyi Baodan*, taking eighty pills at once, and recovered completely in a single dose. This demonstrates that *Weisheng Fangyi Baodan* is reliable for treating hiccups, effective regardless of whether the cause is deficiency or stagnation. This is because Borneol (Bingpian) and Menthol (Bohebing) in the formula are excellent agents for penetrating orifices and unblocking Qi, while Asarum (Xixin) effectively descends rebellious Qi, Angelica dahurica (Baizhi) effectively disseminates stagnant Qi, Cinnabar (Zhusha) calms the upward rebellion of Chong Qi (Rebellious Qi of the Penetrating Vessel), and Licorice Root (Gancao) moderates the irritability of Liver Qi. Although this is not a formula specifically dedicated to hiccups, every ingredient is essential for treating hiccups; hence, it yields consistent results. For patients with severe deficiency of the Lower Yuan (Kidney and Mingmen), the pills should be taken with a concentrated decoction of Dioscorea opposita rhizome (Shanyao). For those with accompanying Heat, they should be taken with a decoction of White Peony Root (Baishao) and Ophiopogon tuber (Maidong). For those with accompanying Cold, they should be taken with a decoction of Dried Ginger (Ganjiang) and Magnolia bark (Houpo). I have used this method dozens of times without fail. If pills cannot be prepared in an emergency, the powder form may be administered directly.
