To treat corneal opacity (mucous membrane covering the pupil).
Raw Calamina (Sheng Lvgashi, 1 liang), Borax (Pengsha, 8 qian), Alum (Danfan, 2 qian), Mint Leaf (Bohe Ye, 3 qian), Cicada Slough (Chantui, 3 qian, retaining all legs, removing wings and soil).
Take the above five herbs. First, pound the first three herbs in a mortar until they become fine powder. Then, decoct the mint leaves and cicada slough in one large cup of water. Use this decoction to mix with the pounded herb powder, place it in a medicine mortar, and grind it until extremely fine. The floating particles will rise with the water; collect them along with the water into a separate container. After waiting for a moment, pour the clear water from the surface back into the mortar, mix with the remaining dregs, and grind finely again, letting the fine powder float out with the water. Repeat this process many times until the powder is thoroughly refined. If the refined powder is not yet fine enough, repeat grinding and refining until it reaches an extremely fine consistency. Store the prepared mixture with water in a bottle, ensuring it is airtight. When using, shake the bottle to mix the water and medicine evenly, and apply drops to the eyes five to six times daily. If the corneal opacity is very dense and has formed a fleshy growth (meat screw-like opacity), add two fen of genuine Zangsha, grind separately, and mix into the medicinal water. The efficacy of this formula relies entirely on the raw use of Calamina. However, raw Calamina is very hard and may be unsuitable for the eyes; therefore, it must be ground finely and processed by water levigation before being used as eye drops.
To treat distending pain in the eyeballs, slight formation of cloud-like opacities, red vessels spreading across the eyes, ulceration of the eyes, or occasional blurred vision due to fire pathogen.
Raw Calamina (Sheng Lvgashi, 3 qian), Borax (Pengsha, 2 qian), Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian, 1 qian), Human Nail (Ren Zhijia, 5 fen, pan-fried until brittle; those with imperfections are not used).
First, crush the Coptis rhizome and soak it in a bowl. In cold weather, soak for two to three days; in hot weather, soak for one day. Filter the water used to soak the Coptis, obtaining approximately half a teacup of clear liquid. Then, pound the remaining three herbs into fine powder. Mix this powder with the Coptis soaking water in a medicine mortar and grind it, following the same method as described previously, until extremely fine. Once ground, keep the mixture with water and medicine in a large plate. During the day, place it in a shaded area to dry; at night, expose it to the dew. In winter, slight sun exposure is also acceptable. If there is wind or dust, cover it with thin paper. Once dried, store it in a bottle, ensuring it is airtight. When using, mix with cool water and apply drops to the eyes three to four times daily. If there are corneal opacities, mix with human milk for application. If the corneal opacity is large and dense, do not use Coptis water for grinding the medicine; instead, use one qian of Cicada Slough (retaining all legs, removing wings and soil), decoct it in water, and use this water for grinding. This is because slight opacities will recede when treated with heat-clearing herbs. However, if the opacity has already covered the pupil, treating it with Coptis may result in ice-like opacity that cannot be eliminated.
