(1) Inquiry on the treatment of snake bites
The method for treating snake bites recorded in *Yanfang Xinbian* (New Compilation of Verified Prescriptions) involves using soot/oil residue from a smoking pipe, rinsing it with cold water, freezing it, and then drinking it. This prescription is very effective. If it remains ineffective, one may use substances that are antipathic to snakes. The substances feared by snakes include centipede (*Scolopendra subspinipes mutilans*) and realgar (*Realgar*). A proposed prescription uses three whole centipedes and two qian (approx. 7.5g) of realgar, ground together into fine powder and divided into three packets. For each dose, take one packet, combined with two qian of licorice root (*Gancao*, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) and two qian of Paris polyphylla (*Zaichou*, Paris polyphylla), decocted in water and taken orally. Administer twice daily; recovery should occur within ten days.
(2) Inquiry on the treatment of stubborn tinea (ringworm) and pruritus of the sole
Remove the husk of large windfall nut (*Da Fengzi*, Semend Crotonis Tiglii), pound the kernel into a paste, add a small amount of finely powdered white arsenic (*Bai Pi*, Arsenicum Album), and mix with lard to form a plaster for topical application. This is a potent/strong prescription. Alternatively, decoct fresh Datura metel (*Xian Tuoluo*, Daturae Metelis Herba) into a paste (stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits are all usable), mix with finely powdered bitter melon seed (*Yadanzi*, Bruceae Fructus), and apply as a plaster. This is a mild/harmonizing prescription. For pruritus of the sole, decoct three strips of shed snake skin (*Shetui*, Ophichius Skin) and two qian of licorice root (*Gancao*, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) in water for oral consumption. Then, re-decoct the dregs and fumigate/wash the area; healing can be expected within half a month.
(3) Inquiry on the treatment of throat conditions
In early autumn, take one large watermelon (weighing approximately seven or eight jin, approx. 3.5-4kg), cut an opening, and insert one jin each of finely powdered borax (*Pengsha*, Borax) and saltpeter (*Huoxiao*, Natrii Nitras). Replace the cut piece of rind to seal the opening. Place the watermelon in a newly kiln-fired earthenware jar (the jar must not have been exposed to moisture), seal the jar mouth tightly, and hang it in a quiet room without smoke/fire and without air circulation. After ten days, observe white frost forming on the outside of the jar, sweep it down. For every liang (approx. 30g) of this frost, mix in two fen (approx. 0.6g) of peppermint ice (*Bohe Bing*, Menthae Haplocalycis Herba). Store in a bottle, ensuring no gas escapes. When encountering red and swollen throat conditions, applying this drops will cause immediate resolution.
For external application, mix equal parts of finely powdered raw red kaolin (*Sheng Chishizhi*, Halloysitum Rubrum) and finely powdered dry Panax notoginseng (*Han Sanqi*, Notoginseng Radix et Rhizoma), blend evenly, and apply topically. It immediately stops bleeding and pain. For internal administration, take two qian of finely powdered dry Panax notoginseng (*Han Sanqi*, Notoginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and two fen of aspirin (*Xi Yao Choubao*, Aspirinum), taken together. It immediately resolves blood stasis and stops pain.
Sun XX notes: For any traumatic injuries or falls, using Baifu Zhitong Powder (White Fuzi Analgesic Powder) is excellent. The prescription is listed below:
Aconitum kusnezoffii (*Baifuzi*, Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix) (6 liang), Angelica dahurica (*Baizhi*, Angelicae Dahuricae Radix) (5 qian), Notopterygium incisum (*Qianghuo*, Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (5 qian), Saposhnikovia divaricata (*Fangfeng*, Saposhnikoviae Radix) (5 qian), Pinellia ternata (*Nanxing*, Pinelliae Rhizoma) (5 qian; all used raw, ground together into fine powder).
For local cyanosis/swelling, mix with child's urine (*Tongbian*, Puerperal Urine) and apply. If the skin is broken, sprinkle the dry powder directly. Even if the testicles are ruptured and protruding, it can immediately stop pain, promote tissue regeneration, stop bleeding, and resolve stasis, without contraindications regarding wind exposure. Truly an excellent prescription.
