For those who have just been poisoned by arsenic trioxide (Pishi), the toxin is located in the upper part of the stomach (Shangwan). Use one liang of raw Gypsum Fibrosum (Sheng Shigao) and five qian of raw Alum (Sheng Baifan), grind them together into a fine powder. First, mix half of the powder with seven egg whites and take it orally; this should induce vomiting. If there is still no vomiting, or if the amount vomited is not much, use another seven egg whites to mix with the remaining half of the powder and take it; this will inevitably cause severe vomiting. After vomiting, if there is residual heat, use four liang of fine raw Gypsum Fibrosum (Sheng Shigao) powder alone, boil it in water to make two large bowls of decoction. Place the bowl in ice water or newly drawn well water to cool it down quickly, and drink it in several doses until the sensation of heat is eliminated. If the toxin has reached the middle part of the stomach (Zhongwan), there is no need to use emetics. One can use two to three liang of fine raw Gypsum Fibrosum (Sheng Shigao) powder alone, mixed with egg whites as before, and take it according to the severity of the heat, finishing it in two, three, or four doses. Once the toxin is resolved, it is not necessary to finish the entire dose. Moreover, when the heat has subsided by seventy to eighty percent, one should no longer take Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao) powder but should continue to drink the boiled Gypsum Fibrosum (Sheng Shigao) decoction as before to eliminate the remaining heat. If the toxin has reached the lower part of the stomach (Xiawan), one should urgently guide the toxin downward to be excreted through the stool. Use two liang of fine raw Gypsum Fibrosum (Sheng Shigao) powder and one liang of Mirabilite (Mangxiao), mixed with egg whites as before. For severe poisoning, take it all at once. If there is residual heat after taking the medicine, drink the raw Gypsum Fibrosum (Sheng Shigao) decoction as described above. Although the usage of this prescription varies, it always centers on Gypsum Fibrosum (Shigao). This is treating stone with stone, using the cool nature of stone to treat the hot nature of stone. I have used this prescription to save many people; even in critical conditions, bold use can also rescue them.
[Shen Shou Pu Ji Wu Xing Miao Hua Dan] Treats severe external trauma where the patient's breathing has stopped, or sudden unconsciousness due to fright, or even cessation of breath. Urgently use one li of this pill, apply to the outer canthus of the eye (left for males, right for females); then use three fen, swallow with boiling water. For those unable to take medicine orally, dissolve the medicine in boiling water and administer via gavage; they will regain consciousness in a moment. It also treats all acute diseases, cholera, sha syndrome, pediatric convulsions and epilepsy, fire eyes, gan gangrene, and bloody and white dysentery, all with efficacy. The prescription is recorded below:
Saltpeter (Huoxiao, eight liang) Vitriol (Zaofan, two liang) Realgar (Xionghuang, one liang) Cinnabar (Chensha, three qian) Borneol (Meipian, two qian)
Grind all into an extremely fine powder, store in a bottle, ensuring no leakage of air.
In the winter of the Wuchen year, a six-year-old boy surnamed Wu in our town passed by the cattle and horse yard. A cow gored him with its horn into his mouth, tearing up to his ear, causing continuous bleeding, and the boy died. This child had no grandfather or father. Upon hearing the news, his grandmother and mother both died of fright. They urgently summoned me to rescue them. I immediately took salt, stir-fried it until hot, and applied it to moxa point Shenque (Dantian). I used Miao Hua Dan to apply to the outer canthus of the eye, and the boy revived. I then used Miao Hua Dan to apply to the outer canthus of his grandmother and mother, and they revived in a moment. I then washed the boy's wound inside and out with Potassium Permanganate (Gaimengyang), applied adhesive tape externally, and added bandaging. He drank cow's milk internally. Three days later, upon inspection, new flesh had grown. I continued to wash it daily with Potassium Permanganate solution. After twenty days, he was fully recovered, leaving no scars.
Furthermore: In mid-April 1917, a woman in her twenties from Zhanggang, Qian County, was kicked by someone while arguing over field boundaries during wheat harvesting, fell to the ground, and died. Several doctors had treated her; some used nasal insufflation, some used goose-beak resuscitation, some rubbed Chinese plum (Wumei) on her teeth. Various methods were tried without success. She was requested to seek my help. Her body was cold as ice, her jaw was tightly clenched, and it had been over a day since she collapsed, yet her chest remained slightly warm. I urgently used Miao Hua Dan to apply to the outer canthus of the eye; I stir-fried two jin of salt until hot, made two packs, and applied them to Dantian, replacing them alternately to provide warmth to assist vital energy. After the time it takes to burn two sticks of incense, her jaw opened. I then gave her brown sugar dissolved in boiling water, and she revived.
Furthermore: In early summer of the Yichou year, I treated Mr. Liu, who was over forty years old. Due to a dispute over family property division, he was stabbed below the navel by his brother with a knife. His intestines protruded, filling a basin. He suddenly experienced rapid breathing and profuse sweating like rain. Several doctors were consulted but lacked confidence. I was urgently summoned. Observing his dangerous condition, showing signs of collapse, I urgently used one liang each of raw Radix Astragali (Sheng Huangqi), processed Fructus Corni (Jing Yurou), and raw Rhizoma Dioscoreae (Sheng Shanyao) to consolidate his qi and prevent collapse. After taking the decoction, his panting ceased and sweating stopped. Inspecting the wound, I found the intestine was ruptured with feces flowing out. I first washed away the feces and blood with Potassium Permanganate solution. I then urgently used mulberry root bark (Sanggenbaipi) as thread to suture the ruptured intestine, applied a little sulf-iodine ointment, and slowly returned the intestine to the abdominal cavity. I then sutured the abdominal wall with synthetic sutures. I covered the area with gauze soaked in Potassium Permanganate water, warmed appropriately, placed cotton wool moistened with sulf-iodine ointment on top, and bandaged it securely, changing the dressing once a day. Internally, I administered Neituo Shengji San (Internal Support Muscle-Growth Powder) from "Records of Integrating Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine," prepared as a decoction, brewing the dregs again for consumption within the same day. He fully recovered in three weeks.
Note: This case did not use Miao Hua Dan. Because the injury was severe and critical, yet he was successfully cured, it truly serves as a standard for treating such severe injuries, hence it is mentioned here. The Neituo Shengji San used is my prescription for promoting muscle growth after ulceration of sores. It is most effective for any sore that has ruptured, ulcerated, and fails to heal quickly. If one wishes to convert the powder into a decoction, change the dose of Radix Puerariae Lobatae (Tianhuafen) to four liang. Divide one prescription into eight doses, brew and consume the dregs twice a day. Its muscle-generating power is more effective than taking the powder.
