Treats diarrhea that does not stop during the summer heat, with burning skin, dry thirst in the heart (chest/epigastrium), difficult urination, or accompanied by panting and shortness of breath. This syndrome is particularly common in children, and this formula yields better results.
Raw Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao) [Dioscorea opposita] (1 liang / approx. 37.5g)
Talcum [Talcum] (6 qian / approx. 22.5g)
Prepared Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Fen Gancao) [Glycyrrhiza uralensis] (3 qian / approx. 11.25g)
Decoct in water and take orally.
This is a syndrome where prolonged diarrhea has depleted Yin fluids, compounded by Summer-heat pathogenic factors. Therefore, the formula employs Tianshui San (Cool Water Powder, also known as Liuyi San/Six-to-One Powder, composed of Talcum and Licorice, used to clear Summer-heat and promote diuresis) to clear the heat of humid Summer-heat. The dosage of Gancao (Licorice) is three times that of the original formula (the original formula uses six parts Talcum to one part Licorice, hence the name Liuyi San). The rich, sweet flavor of Licorice harmonizes with the extremely bland nature of Talcum, and it can also clear the heat generated by Yin deficiency. Furthermore, a heavy dose of Shanyao (Dioscorea) is used because it greatly nourishes True Yin (Kidney Yin) and firmly consolidates Yuan Qi (Primary Qi), thereby assisting and supporting the therapeutic effect. When True Yin is sufficient, urination becomes smooth naturally; when Yuan Qi is consolidated, diarrhea stops naturally. Moreover, its viscous juice, when used together with the sweet and moderating properties of Licorice, can retain Talcum within the body, preventing it from being expelled too quickly through its bland and leaching diuretic action. This allows the cooling property of Talcum to transmit from the Stomach to the Spleen, and from the Spleen to reach the Lung. Water essence then distributes throughout the body and flows downward to the Bladder. In such a case, will not the heat of the whole body and the dry thirst and panting of the Upper Jiao be suddenly and completely eliminated?
Children possess a Shaoyang constitution (characterized by vigorous growth but delicate organs), making them least tolerant of heat, thus prone to contracting Summer-heat. Regarding diet and daily life, they prefer cold and cool foods, making them prone to diarrhea. Prolonged diarrhea depletes Yin and generates heat, inevitably leading to increased aversion to the heat of Summer-qi. The pathological heat and Summer-heat form a vicious cycle, making treatment very difficult. This formula contains only three herbs, yet its design is comprehensive and meticulous, treating both internal injury and external contraction without omission. After taking one or two doses, as Summer-heat gradually recedes, the amount of Talcum can be gradually reduced, adjusted according to circumstances. There is no case where it fails to produce immediate effects. In children suffering from prolonged diarrhea during the summer months, deficient heat rebels upward and combines with Summer-heat qi, blocking the stomach opening. This often leads to nausea and vomiting, rendering the child unable to accept food or drink. This formula not only clears Summer-heat and nourishes Yin, harmonizes the Middle Jiao, and stops diarrhea, but its heavy and sinking nature can also calm the Stomach Qi and pacify the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel). This causes the rebelling heat and Summer-heat to descend slowly and exit via urination, thereby stopping nausea and vomiting spontaneously.
When this formula was first finalized, I entrusted it to my disciple Gao XX for recording. The next day, upon returning to his hometown, Gao XX encountered an infant who had suffered from diarrhea for over a month. The child had fever, dry thirst, a craving for cold water, and experienced nausea and vomiting whenever forced to eat. Despite various treatments, the condition did not improve. Gao XX administered this decoction. After one dose, the dry thirst and diarrhea improved by half. After another dose, the child could eat, and all ailments were cured.
