Treats the same syndrome as mentioned previously, accompanied by asthma due to Kidney failing to grasp Qi.
Raw Dioscoreae Rhizoma (Shanyao) (1 liang 5 qian) Arctii Fructus (Niubangzi) (stir-fried and crushed, 4 qian) Persimmon Frost Cake (Shishuang Bing) (dissolved in decoction, 6 qian)
A patient, over forty years old, had a chronic history of asthma, which would flare up upon slight exposure to external pathogens. A physician prescribed Xiao Qing Long Tang (Minor Blue Dragon Decoction), which cured him after one dose, leading to habitual use. One day, the asthma recurred, and three doses of Xiao Qing Long Tang were taken consecutively without effect. The pulse beat more than five times per respiration; the Cun position on the right hand was floating and large, but empty upon heavy pressure. I deduced that he recovered previously because his condition was indeed caused by an external pathogen; however, it failed this time because the current asthma onset was not due to an external pathogen. It seems that because slight exposure triggers his asthma, there is pre-existing damage to both the Lung and Kidney. If only the branch symptoms are treated without addressing the root cause, the damage will worsen, hence the asthma occurs even without external exposure. This formula was prescribed, resulting in complete recovery after two doses, followed by several more doses to consolidate the cure.
Treats deficiency of both Lung and Kidney, manifesting as cough, or wheezing/asthma, or soreness and pain in the lower back and knees, or weakness in the four limbs. It is particularly suitable for treating children.
Walnut Kernel (Hetaoren) (1 jin) Persimmon Frost Cake (Shishuang Bing) (1 jin)
First, steam the walnut kernels until cooked in a rice steamer. Then, place them together with the Persimmon Frost Cake in a porcelain vessel and steam again until they melt into a single mass. Allow to cool, and take as desired.
Generally, kernels from fruit pits that possess tonifying properties can benefit the Kidney. The walnut is the largest among fruit pits; its kernel is rich in oil and has a fragrant, delicious taste, making it a fine food item. Thus, its nature is known to be good at tonifying the Kidney. Persimmon frost is white and enters the Lung meridian; it is sweet, cool, slippery, and moistening. Its sweetness benefits Lung Qi; its coolness clears Lung heat; its slipperiness promotes the discharge of Lung phlegm; its moisture nourishes Lung dryness. Used together with walnuts, it tonifies both Lung and Kidney, promoting the mutual generation of Metal and Water. Deficient individuals will easily become robust. Moreover, it is very palatable and can be taken freely when hungry, making it especially excellent for treating children.
[Attached Formula] A folk remedy for consumptive cough: On the Autumnal Equinox, take over ten fresh radishes, remove the leaves, insert fresh Sophora japonica twigs through the center of the leaf stalk so that the twig ends protrude from the root end. Hang them on a lush tree for exactly one hundred days. On the one hundred and first day, harvest them. To use, remove the twigs, slice the radishes, boil until soft, mix with red rock sugar, and consume. Take one radish per dose; several doses will result in a cure.
Note: Radishes are white and enter the Lung meridian; Sophora twigs are black and enter the Kidney meridian. The purpose of this preparation is likely to guide Lung Qi down to the Kidney. Hanging them on a lush tree is because abundant foliage releases oxygen; the radishes ferment/ripen using this oxygen, thereby enhancing their tonifying power. Hanging them for a full hundred days allows them to endure frost and dew, absorbing the Qi of Metal and Water to tonify the Zang organs of Metal and Water (Lung and Kidney). An elderly surnamed Sun in my county, nearly sixty years old, suffered from consumptive asthma unresponsive to various medicines. After obtaining this formula and taking it, he...
