[General Principle] The lateral sides of the body are governed by the Liver and Gallbladder; it is most appropriate for Yin and Yang Qi to be harmonious and unobstructed. If pain is fixed with hardness, methods that break stagnation and promote drainage should be used; the etiology is either Phlegm or Blood Stasis, so do not hesitate.
Pain in both hypochondriac regions, accompanied by difficulty in bending, extending, flexing, and stretching, indicates disharmony of Shaoyang (Lesser Yang) Qi. Jia Jian Chai Hu Tang (Modified Bupleurum Decoction) is indicated.

(Botan's Note: For intermittent pain in both hypochondriac regions, Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus, 2 qian) should be powdered and taken with salt wine.)
Pain in both hypochondriac regions that penetrates, wanders, and produces sounds indicates Phlegm-Fluid retention in the Liver and Spleen. Jia Wei Er Chen Tang (Modified Two-Aged-Chen Decoction) is indicated.

Bai Jie Zi (Sinapis Semen) and Qian Hu eliminate Phlegm-Fluid; Zi Zhi unblocks collaterals to prevent Cold invasion.
Pain in both soft hypochondriac regions, along with pain in the lower abdomen, indicates disharmony of Jueyin (Terminal Yin) Blood. Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang (Drive Out Stasis in the Mansion of Blood Decoction) is indicated.
