The *Suwen: Gu Kong Lun* states: The Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) originates at Qichuan (ST30), runs parallel to the Foot-Shaoyin Kidney Meridian, flanks the navel and ascends, dispersing within the chest (see Figure 78).
The *Lingshu: Wei Qi Pian* states: Let me speak of the Qi Streets. There is a Qi Street in the chest, a Qi Street in the abdomen, and a Qi Street in the lower legs.
Therefore, when Qi is in the head, it terminates in the brain;
When Qi is in the chest, it terminates in the anterior chest (Ying) and the Back-Shu points on the back;
When Qi is in the abdomen, it terminates in the Back-Shu points on the back, and in the pulsating arteries on either side of the navel belonging to the Chong Mai;
When Qi is in the lower legs, it terminates at Qichuan (ST30), Chengshan (BL57), and above the ankle.
Text:
The Chong Mai originates from the abdominal Qi Street. The acquired Zong Qi (Pectoral Qi) comes from the Qichong point (ST30), merging with the innate True Qi. They run together, flanking the navel and ascending to the chest's Qi Street. The Great Qi disperses upon reaching the chest, uniting with the Du Mai (Governing Vessel) and Ren Mai (Conception Vessel) to fill the body, distributing to the Zang-Fu organs and all meridians. It is named the "Sea" without contradiction.
Annotations: [1] When it says "the Chong Mai originates at the Qi Street," it refers to originating at the Qi Street of the abdomen.
[2] It is called the "Qi Street" because it is the pathway through which Qi travels.
[3] The Great Qi of the whole body, accumulated in the chest, consists of the innate True Qi, which is received from one's parents, namely the Moving Qi between the kidneys; and the acquired Zong Qi (Pectoral Qi), which is transformed from water and grain, namely the Stomach Qi.
[4] What is meant by "originating from the abdominal Qi Street" is that it starts from the Grain Qi in the stomach; and "running parallel to the Shaoyin" means merging with the Moving Qi between the kidneys. The True Qi merges with the Grain Qi, flanks the navel and ascends, dispersing upon reaching the chest. This means the Great Qi reaches the chest, distributes to the meridians of the five Zang and six Fu organs, thereby filling the body.
[5] The *Lingshu: Shun Ni Fei Shou Pian* states: The Chong Mai is the Sea of the Five Zang and Six Fu organs,
as all five Zang and six Fu organs receive its Qi.
[6] The *Lingshu: Dong Yu Pian* further states: The Chong Mai is the Sea of the Twelve Meridians, connected with the large collateral of the Foot-Shaoyin,
originating below the kidney and emerging from the Qichuan point (ST30).
[7] The *Lingshu: Wu Yin Wu Wei Pian* further states: Both the Chong Mai and Ren Mai originate in the Bao Zhong (Uterus/Blood Chamber),
which refers to what is said here as originating below the kidney. To say it originates below the kidney means it runs parallel to the Foot-Shaoyin Meridian,
with the Moving Qi between the kidneys ascending.
[8] The *Suwen: Gu Kong Lun* states: The Chong Mai originates at Qichong (ST30), which refers to emerging from the Qi Street mentioned here.
[9] It does not say "originates" but "emerges from," indicating that Grain Qi emerges from the Foot-Yangming Stomach Meridian and converges at the Qi Street.
