[Note] When postpartum thirst is due to Qi deficiency and insufficient body fluids, Shenmai Yin is appropriate, which consists of Renshen (Ginseng Root), Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber), and Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit). For thirst due to Blood deficiency, Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Tianhuafen (Trichosanthes Root) and Maidong (Ophiopogon Tuber) is appropriate. If the thirst is severe and unrelieved, Zhuye Guiqi Tang (Bamboo Leaf and Astragalus Decoction) should be used, comprising Renshen (Ginseng Root), Baizhu (Atractylodes Macrocephala Rhizome), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis Root), Huangqi (Astragalus Root), Zhuye (Bamboo Leaf), and Gancao (Licorice Root), decocted and taken orally.
Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) See first volume of this book.
Xuanfuhua Tang (Inula Flower Decoction), Maiwei Dihuang Tang (Lonicera and Schisandra Rehmannia Decoction), Jiawei Foshou San (Modified Buddha's Hand Powder)

For cough caused by blood stasis entering the Lung, Foshou San (Buddha's Hand Powder) added with Taoren (Peach Kernel), Honghua (Carthamus Flower), Xingren (Apricot Seed), Chuanbeimu (Fritillaria Cirrhosa Bulb), and Yanhusuo (Corydalis Rhizome) is indicated to break up the stasis, after which the cough will heal spontaneously.
[Note] Postpartum cough, if caused by moving too early and contracting wind-cold, can be treated with Xuanfuhua Tang (Inula Flower Decoction), consisting of Jingjie Sui (Perilla Twig), Qianhu (Peucedanum Root), Mahuang (Ephedra Herb), Xingren (Apricot Seed), Banxia (Pinellia Tuber), Fuling (Poria), Chishao (Red Peony Root), Wuweizi (Schisandra Fruit), Gancao (Licorice Root), Xuanfuhua (Inula Flower), Dazao (Jujube), and Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger). Renshen Zelan Ye Tang (Ginseng and Lycopodium Decoction)
6. Postpartum blackening of the mouth and nose accompanied by epistaxis indicates exhaustion of Stomach Qi and failure of Lung Qi, making it difficult to treat with medicine. Renshen Lan Danshen Shudi Tang (Ginseng, Lycopodium, Moutan, Achyranthes, and Raw and Cooked Rehmannia Decoction), also known as Renshen Zelan Ye Tang (Ginseng and Lycopodium Decoction), consisting of Renshen (Ginseng Root), Zelan Ye (Lycopodium Herb), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Niuxi (Achyranthes Root), Shengdi (Raw Rehmannia Root), and Shudi (Cooked Rehmannia Root), decocted and taken with a large amount of Tongbian (Child Urine), may offer a slim chance of survival.
[Note] When lochia does not discharge postpartum, deficient fire carries blood upward, overflowing from the nasal orifice without following the meridians, resulting in black discoloration visible at the mouth and nose. This represents extreme heat manifesting with water-like characteristics, hence termed "exhaustion of Stomach Qi and failure of Lung Qi," indicating that medicinal treatment is difficult. Alternatively, Renshen Zelan Ye Tang (Ginseng and Lycopodium Decoction), consisting of Renshen (Ginseng Root), Zelan Ye (Lycopodium Herb), Danpi (Moutan Cortex), Niuxi (Achyranthes Root), Shengdi (Raw Rehmannia Root), and Shudi (Cooked Rehmannia Root), can be decocted and taken with a generous amount of Tongbian (Child Urine). Occasionally, patients may survive, but this is merely hoping for a miracle in one out of ten thousand cases.
