2. Wind-stroke injuring the Wei (Defensive) level presents with a floating and moderate pulse; stiffness and pain in the head and neck, aversion to wind and cold; upon onset of the disease, fever occurs spontaneously with sweating, nasal congestion (snoring sound), and dry retching.
The efficacy of Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction).
[Annotation] "Wind-stroke" is the name of the disease. "Injuring the Wei" refers to wind pathogen injuring the Wei (Defensive) Qi. "Floating and moderate pulse" refers to the pulse pattern of wind-stroke. "Headache, neck stiffness, aversion to cold and wind, spontaneous fever with sweating, nasal congestion, and dry retching" refer to the syndrome patterns of wind-stroke. "Efficacy of Guizhi Tang" means that Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) functions to treat the deficiency-type external pathogens of wind-stroke. See the Upper Chapter of Taiyang for details.
3. Cold damage injuring the Ying (Nutritive) level presents with a floating and tight pulse; headache and body pain, aversion to wind and cold; absence of sweating accompanied by wheezing, or fever already present, or fever not yet present, vomiting and regurgitation. Ma Huang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) for inducing sweating is most efficacious.
[Annotation] "Cold damage" is the name of the disease. "Injuring the Ying" refers to cold pathogen injuring the Ying (Nutritive) Qi. "Floating and tight pulse" refers to the pulse pattern of cold damage. "Headache, body pain, aversion to cold and wind, absence of sweating with wheezing, either fever already present or not yet present, vomiting and regurgitation" refer to the syndrome patterns of cold damage. "Ma Huang Tang for inducing sweating" means that for excess pathogens of cold damage, one should use Ma Huang Tang (Ephedra Decoction) to induce sweating, which is most efficacious. See the Middle Chapter of Taiyang for details.
4. Wind-stroke presenting with a floating and tight pulse, generalized body pain, headache, fever, aversion to wind and cold, dry retching, absence of sweating, and irritability; Cold damage presenting with heaviness of the body that occasionally lightens, floating and moderate pulse, vomiting and regurgitation, absence of sweating with wheezing, headache, fever, aversion to wind and cold, irritability without Shaoyin syndrome: this is simultaneous disease of Ying and Wei, treated with Da Qing Long Tang (Major Blue Green Dragon Decoction).
[Annotation] "Wind-stroke" refers to the disease where wind pathogen injures the Wei (Defensive) level. "Headache, fever, aversion to wind and cold, dry retching" are the syndrome patterns of wind-stroke. "Floating and tight" is the pulse pattern of cold pathogen injuring the Ying (Nutritive) level. "Body pain" is the syndrome pattern of cold pathogen injuring the Ying (Nutritive) level. Now, having the disease of wind-stroke but acquiring the pulse and syndrome patterns of cold damage, further complicated by irritability due to exterior excess from lack of sweating and interior heat. "Cold damage" refers to the disease where cold pathogen injures the Ying (Nutritive) level. "Heaviness of the body without pain, occasionally feeling lighter" are the syndrome patterns of wind pathogen injuring the Wei (Defensive) level. "Floating and moderate" is the pulse pattern of wind pathogen injuring the Wei (Defensive) level. "Vomiting and regurgitation, absence of sweating with wheezing, headache, fever, aversion to cold and wind" are the syndrome patterns of cold pathogen injuring the Ying (Nutritive) level. Thus, having the disease of cold damage but acquiring the pulse and syndrome patterns of wind-stroke, further complicated by irritability due to exterior excess from lack of sweating and interior heat in the Taiyang stage. And no Shaoyin syndrome refers to the absence of symptoms such as "heaviness of the body and desire to sleep." "Simultaneous disease of Ying and Wei" refers to the simultaneous injury of Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) levels by wind and cold pathogens. Both syndromes involve excess pathogens with absence of sweating; therefore, both are treated with Da Qing Long Tang (Major Blue Green Dragon Decoction) to induce sweating. See the Lower Chapter of Taiyang for details.
