[Collected Annotations] Wang Ang stated: The Heart belongs to Ministerial Fire (Jun Huo). Once Ministerial Fire moves, Defensorial Fire (Xiang Huo) follows. Defensorial Fire resides in the Liver and Gallbladder. If Kidney Yin is deficient, Essence (Jing) cannot be stored; if Liver Yang is hyperactive, Qi cannot be secured. Thus, Essence escapes, resulting in dream emission. Shan Yao nourishes Yin and astringes Essence, hence it serves as the Sovereign herb. Ren Shen and Huang Qi are used to secure Qi; Yuan Zhi, Fu Ling, and Fu Shen are used to calm the Spirit (Shen). When the Spirit is calm and Qi is secured, Essence naturally remains in its position. Dan Sha (Cinnabar) calms the Heart and anchors the Soul. The two aromatics (Mu Xiang and She Xiang) open stagnation and unblock orifices. Jie Geng carries the heart-directed herbs to remain long in the diaphragm region. Gan Cao harmonizes the various herbs, facilitating harmony in the Middle Jiao. This formula does not establish its principle on purging fire or astringing leakage, but rather on calming the Spirit and securing Qi, causing Essence and Spirit-Qi to rely on each other, thereby reducing dreams and preserving Essence.
[Commentary] Zhu Zhenheng said: The organ responsible for storage and retention is the Kidney; the organ responsible for dispersion and excretion is the Liver. Both organs contain Defensorial Fire (Xiang Huo), and their connections extend upward to belong to the Heart. The Heart is Ministerial Fire (Jun Huo). It is easily moved by external stimuli; when the Heart moves, Defensorial Fire flares up and follows. Even without sexual intercourse, Essence flows secretly and leaks. Therefore, the Sages only taught people to gather the mind and nurture nature; the purport is profound. Zhu Zhenheng’s discussion is highly appropriate. His lifelong effort focused on tonifying Yin to control Defensorial Fire, deeply understanding the principle of the *Neijing*: "Heaven generates Yin and grows through Yang; Earth kills and stores Yin through Yang." Modern physicians only know that Yang generates, not knowing that Yin also generates; they only know that Yin kills, not knowing that Yang also kills. Although the classics repeatedly point out that Yang collapse, Yin collapse, Yang extinction, and Yin extinction all lead to death, those who are deluded in their will and biased do not return [to the truth]. Regarding this specific condition, in elderly people, although the mind may be stirred, Defensorial Fire is weak and cannot flare up vigorously; thus, although dreams occur, no emission happens. From this, we can understand why Zhu Zhenheng used Huang Bo (Phellodendri Cortex) alone, slightly assisted by Bing Pian (Borneolum Syntheticum), named Qing Xin Wan (Clear the Heart Pill), which exclusively purges Defensorial Fire. It has been frequently effective in treating dream emission and palpitations caused by excessive Defensorial Fire in middle-aged individuals.
