Pig Skin (Zhu Fu), one jin
The above single ingredient is boiled in ten dou of water until five sheng remain. The dregs are removed, and one sheng of white honey and five he of white powder (rice flour) are added. It is cooked until fragrant, mixed thoroughly, and taken warm in six divided doses.
[Formula Analysis]
Pig skin refers to the outer epidermis of the pig's hide. Its nature is light, and its flavor is salty. Being light allows it to disperse, and being salty enters the Kidney channel. Therefore, it treats sore throat caused by Shaoyin disease, embodying the intent of dispersing pathogens within the process of clearing heat.
[Collected Explanations]
Cheng Wuji stated: Pigs are aquatic animals. Their qi first enters the Kidney meridian, resolving exogenous heat in the Shaoyin. Adding honey moistens dryness and eliminates irritability, while adding rice flour benefits Qi and stops diarrhea.

In Shaoyin disease, if there is a sore throat after two or three days, Gancao Tang (Licorice Decoction) may be administered. If it does not improve, Jiegeng Tang (Platycodon Decoction) should be given.
[Annotation]
In Shaoyin disease, if a sore throat appears after two or three days without other symptoms, it indicates a mild exogenous heat pathogen in the Shaoyin meridian. Gancao Tang (Licorice Decoction) can be used to gently drain the heat from the Shaoyin meridian. If it remains unhealed, Jiegeng Tang (Platycodon Decoction) is given, which is Gancao Tang (Licorice Decoction) with the addition of Jiegeng (Platycodon Root) to open up stagnant heat. Bitter-cold herbs are avoided to prevent the heat from becoming trapped within the Yin meridians.
[Collected Notes]
Yu Chang said: Using Gancao (Licorice Root) moderates the progression of the condition; using Jiegeng (Platycodon Root) lifts and releases the pathogen. This approach is applicable when the disease has lasted two or three days and other symptoms have not yet manifested. However, by the fifth or sixth day, symptoms such as diarrhea and vomiting associated with Shaoyin disease will arise, making this method unsuitable.
Gancao (Licorice Root), two liang
The above single ingredient is boiled in three sheng of water until one and a half sheng remain. The dregs are removed, and seven he is taken warm twice daily.
Jiegeng (Platycodon Root), one liang; Gancao (Licorice Root), two liang
The above two ingredients are boiled in three sheng of water until one sheng remains. The dregs are removed, and the decoction is taken warm in two divided doses.

In Shaoyin disease, if there is severe pain in the throat, Banxia San Ji Tang (Pinellia Powder and Decoction) is the primary treatment.
[Annotation]
"Throat pain" (Yan Tong) in Shaoyin disease refers to pain in either the left or right side, localized to one area. "Severe throat pain" (Yan Zhong Tong) refers to pain throughout the entire throat, which is more severe than simple throat pain. In severe cases, saliva may adhere to the throat; therefore, Banxia San (Pinellia Powder) is prescribed to disperse wind pathogens and eliminate phlegm/saliva.
[Collected Notes]
Fang Youzhi stated: This describes conditions where severe wind-heat and upward congestion of phlegm cause obstruction and pain. Thus, Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction) is used as the main agent to dispel wind, Banxia (Pinellia Tuber) assists in resolving phlegm, and Gancao (Licorice Root) harmonizes to clear heat. These three substances constitute another therapeutic method for treating throat pain.
