Treats dry cough caused by deficiency consumption (Xu Lao).
Sheng Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata, 4 jin), Bai Fu Ling (Poria, 13 liang), Bai Mi (White Honey, 2 jin), Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, 6 liang). Boil the juice of Sheng Di Huang together with Bai Mi until boiling, filter through silk cloth. Grind Ren Shen and Bai Fu Ling into fine powder, mix evenly with the filtered liquid. Place in a porcelain bottle, cover the mouth with more than ten layers of cotton paper, seal with bamboo leaf, place inside a clay pot, submerge the neck of the bottle in running water, boil using mulberry wood fire for three days and nights. Take out, replace paper to tie the mouth, seal firmly with wax, hang in a well. After one day, take it out, boil again for half a day (ban ri), take orally mixed with soup/water.
[Collected Notes] Li Zhongzi said: Dry cough is characterized by sound without phlegm; it occurs when Fire invades Metal (Lung), causing Metal to resonate due to extreme depletion. This is a disease of the root essence, difficult to succeed without gradual nourishment; if bitter-cold herbs are mistakenly used, they only damage Spleen Earth, leaving Metal without its mother (Earth generates Metal). Therefore, Danxi used Sheng Di Huang as the sovereign herb, so that when Water is abundant, Fire naturally subsides. Furthermore, "for those damaged in the Lung, benefit their Qi," thus Ren Shen is used to stimulate the origin of growth and development. According to "when deficient, tonify the mother," Bai Fu Ling is used to cultivate the foundation of all things (Spleen/Earth). Bai Mi is the essence of hundreds of flowers; its sweet taste enters the Spleen, its moistening nature pleases the Lung, and it alleviates dryness-heat fire. These four ingredients are all mild, good, harmonious, and thick substances, truly worthy of precious care. Guo Ji said: It cures my severe consumptive disease, precious as jade. Hence the name Qiong Yu Gao.
Greatly tonifies essence and marrow, benefits Qi and nourishes Spirit.
Lu Jiao (Blood Horn) 10 jin, Gui Ban (Tortoise Plastron from naturally deceased tortoise) 5 jin, Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berry from Gansu) 30 liang, Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) 15 liang. Use a lead jar to prepare the gel according to standard methods. Initial dose: dissolve 1 qian 5 fen in wine, gradually increase to 3 qian, taken on an empty stomach.
[Collected Notes] Li Zhongzi said: Humans have three wonders: Essence (Jing), Qi, and Spirit (Shen), which are the roots of life. Damaged Essence cannot generate Qi; damaged Qi cannot generate Spirit. For insufficiency of Essence, tonify with flavor/substance. The Deer obtains the most complete Yang Qi of Heaven and Earth, excels in connecting with the Du Mai (Governing Vessel); being sufficient in Essence, it can be sexually active yet live long. The Turtle possesses the most substantial Yin Qi of Heaven and Earth, excels in connecting with the Ren Mai (Conception Vessel); being sufficient in Qi, it can rest quietly and live long. These two substances belong to the category of Qi and Blood, with the purest flavors, and obtain the subtle mysteries of creation. They are sentient beings of different species, employing the method of "repairing bamboo with bamboo" (using similar substance to repair deficiency). Ren Shen benefits Qi, Gou Qi Zi generates Essence, assisting Gui Ban and Lu Jiao in tonifying Yin and Yang without bias; entering both Qi and Blood, possessing the beauty of harmony. Thus, Essence is generated and Qi becomes vigorous; Qi becomes vigorous and Spirit flourishes, approaching the longevity of turtles and deer. Hence called Er Xian Jiao.
