[Article] Congenital wind-induced redness and ulceration of the eyelid margins is caused by fetal heat. The symptoms include red eyes, sticky ocular discharge, and erosion with redness at the canthi. It should be treated with Xiao Fangfeng Tang (Minor Wind-Expelling Decoction), which contains Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Dangguiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix caudex), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, also known as Jiangjun), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra), and Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix).
[Formula] Xiao Fangfeng Tang (Minor Wind-Expelling Decoction)
Ingredients: Qianghuo, Zhizi, Gancao, Dangguiwei, Dahuang, Chishao, and Fangfeng, each 5 fen.
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a coarse powder. Decoct with 1.5 sheng of water until reduced to 0.5 sheng. Take warm on an empty stomach.
[Note] [1] The condition of congenital wind-induced redness and ulceration arises because the mother consumed excessive spicy and hot foods during pregnancy, or because the wet nurse consumed such foods after birth. This causes the infant's eyes to become entirely red, with sticky discharge and tears, and moist erosion at all four canthi. It is appropriate to treat this with Xiao Fangfeng Tang.

[Article] For conditions present before birth where heat rushes to the fetus's head causing eye disasters, use Hujing Wan (Eye-Protection Pill). The ingredients include Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Shegan (Belamcandae Rhizoma), Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), and Heishen (Panacis Ginseng Radix Nigra, i.e., Black Ginseng).
[Formula] Hujing Wan (Eye-Protection Pill)
Ingredients: Muxiang 5 qian, Huangqin 5 qian, Xixin 3 qian, Shegan 5 qian, Dahuang 5 qian, Heishen 1 liang.
Preparation and Administration: Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of tung tree seeds. Take 10 pills with tea infusion on an empty stomach.
[Note] [1] Congenital cataract occurs when, while in the womb, the fetus is affected by excessive consumption of spicy foods by the mother, causing internal heat to rush to the fetal head. After birth, this results in the formation of cataracts in the eyes. It is appropriate to treat this with Hujing Wan.

[Article] Pao Rou Jiao Ning (Coagulation of Eyelid Tissue) presents with swelling of the eyelids. Initially small, it gradually enlarges and rubs against the pupil. This is caused by wind-heat from the Stomach and Spleen attacking the eyes upward. It should be treated with Tongpi Xiwei Tang (Decoction to Drain the Stomach and Purge the Spleen) to disperse wind and clear heat.
[Formula] Tongpi Xiwei Tang (Decoction to Drain the Stomach and Purge the Spleen) (See formula under "Yellow Membrane Rushing Up")
[Note] [1] In the condition of Pao Rou Jiao Ning, tissue within the spleen-related area (referring to pterygium or hypertrophic tissue in the eyelid) becomes obstructed and raised. Initially small, it gradually enlarges, rubbing against the pupil. The eyelids are moist and eroded, with sticky discharge and tears.
[2] This is caused by pathogenic wind and accumulated heat in the Spleen and Stomach rushing upward and obstructing the eyes.
[3] It is appropriate to use Tongpi Xiwei Tang to disperse wind and clear heat, thereby resolving both pathogens simultaneously.
