When examining the pulse pattern on the tiger's mouth (the web between the thumb and index finger) of a newborn infant, observe the left hand for males and the right hand for females. The three segments of the index finger are named Feng Guan (Wind Gate), Qi Guan (Qi Gate), and Ming Guan (Life Gate). If the pulse pattern is faintly visible and stable, it indicates health.
If morphological changes and color variations appear, disease can be diagnosed. Purple indicates internal heat; red indicates cold damage (Shang Han); yellow indicates spleen disease; black indicates Zhong E (acute severe condition); green indicates fright wind (Jing Feng); white indicates Gan syndrome (malnutrition/parasitic accumulation).
Disease indicated at Feng Guan is mild; at Qi Guan, it is severe; if reaching Ming Guan, the prognosis is often poor.
The size and curvature of the pulse pattern, along with purple coloration, indicate food stagnation and internal heat. Curvature with green coloration indicates fright caused by humans or beasts.
Red coloration indicates fright from fire, water, or flying creatures; yellow indicates fright from thunder; black indicates Yin epilepsy (a type of epilepsy).
A pattern resembling a long bead indicates food injury; one resembling flowing beads indicates internal heat.
Qu-She shape (tapered top, thick bottom) indicates vomiting and diarrhea; Lai-She shape (thick top, tapered bottom) indicates Gan syndrome.
Gong Fan Li shape (curved towards the middle finger) indicates cold pathogen invasion due to exogenous contraction; Gong Fan Wai shape (curved towards the thumb) indicates phlegm-heat excess.
Slanting to the left indicates wind injury; slanting to the right indicates cold invasion.
Zhen Xing (needle shape) and Qiang Xing (spear shape) indicate the generation of phlegm-heat.
Patterns extending to the fingertip (She Zhi) or fingernail (She Jia) indicate critical illness with poor prognosis.
A pattern resembling the character "Yi" (乙) indicates convulsions due to fright wind.
Two curves resembling a square indicate transmission of cold pathogen from cold food injury.
Three curves resembling an insect indicate injury from hard objects.
Water-like patterns indicate cough and vomiting/diarrhea.
Ring-shaped patterns indicate stagnation.
Curved insect-like patterns indicate fright.
Fish-bone-like patterns indicate food stagnation.
Patterns resembling chaotic insects indicate roundworm infestation.
Physicians must comprehensively analyze both the form and color of the pulse patterns, observing carefully to avoid errors.
[Note]
For any newborn infant suffering from disease, one must observe the color and form of the pulse patterns at the tiger's mouth to determine the severity and prognosis of the illness.
For males, examine the medial side of the index finger on the left hand first; for females, examine the medial side of the index finger on the right hand first.
The three segments of the finger are: the first segment is Feng Guan (Wind Gate), the second is Qi Guan (Qi Gate), and the third is Ming Guan (Life Gate).
If the pattern color is a mix of red and yellow and is faintly invisible, it signifies peace and absence of disease.
If the pattern color is purple, it belongs to internal heat; red belongs to cold damage; yellow indicates spleen injury; black indicates Zhong E; green indicates fright wind; white indicates Gan syndrome.
Patterns at Feng Guan indicate mild disease; at Qi Guan, severe disease; if passing through to Ming Guan, the disease is critical and difficult to treat.
One must also observe the thickness and curvature of the patterns.
Purple color indicates food injury and internal heat; green color indicates fright from humans or beasts; red color indicates fright from fire, water, or birds.
Yellow indicates fright from thunder; black indicates Yin epilepsy.
If the pattern on the finger appears as a single red dot, it is called Liu Zhu Wen (Flowing Bead Pattern), indicating internal heat.
If round and long, it is called Chang Zhu Xing (Long Bead Shape), indicating dietary injury.
If pointed and long at the top and slightly large at the bottom, it is called Qu She Xing (Departing Snake Shape), indicating food injury with vomiting and diarrhea.
If large at the top and pointed and long at the bottom, it is called Lai She Xing (Arriving Snake Shape), indicating damp-heat transforming into Gan syndrome.
Gong Fan Li (Bow bending inward) refers to the shape curving towards the middle finger, indicating cold pathogen invasion due to exogenous contraction.
Gong Fan Wai (Bow bending outward) refers to the shape curving towards the thumb, indicating internal heat and abundant phlegm.
Patterns slanting to the left point towards the middle finger, indicating wind injury.
Patterns slanting to the right point towards the thumb, indicating cold invasion.
Zhen Xing (Needle Shape) is straight like a hanging needle and slightly short.
Qiang Xing (Spear Shape) extends straight like a spear and is slightly long; both indicate the emergence of phlegm-heat.
Patterns extending to the finger tip (She Zhi) or nail (She Jia) extend directly to the nail or fingertip, indicating severe depletion of Spleen Qi and critical illness that may not recover.
Both are considered untreatable.
Yi Zi Wen (Character Yi Pattern) resembles the character "Yi", indicating fright wind and convulsions.
Two curves resembling a square indicate injury from cold raw foods.
Three curves resembling an insect indicate injury from hard objects.
Water Wen (Water Pattern) resembles the character "Shui" (water), indicating cough.
Huan Xing (Ring Shape) connects in a circle, indicating Gan disease.
Qu Chong Wen (Curved Insect Pattern) resembles a curved insect, indicating food stagnation or fish bone impaction.
Patterns resembling fish spines indicate fright-heat.
Patterns resembling chaotic insects indicate roundworm entanglement.
Practitioners of pediatrics must combine these forms and colors for comprehensive analysis and pay close attention during diagnosis to avoid mistakes.
