4. Menstruation ceases first, followed by edema; this is due to cold-dampness invading the Ren and Chong vessels, causing blood stasis in the meridians. If edema appears first and menstruation ceases later, it is water overflowing onto the skin and spreading widely. Blood-division (Xuefen) disorders are difficult to treat, while Water-division (Shuifen) disorders are easy to treat; these two must be carefully differentiated.
[Note] In women, if menstruation ceases first and then edema occurs, it is because cold-dampness has injured the Chong and Ren vessels, causing blood stasis in the meridians; this is called Blood-division (Xuefen). If edema occurs first and then menstruation ceases, it is because Spleen Earth fails to control Water, leading to the flooding of pathogenic water overflowing onto the skin; this is called Water-division (Shuifen). Blood-division is difficult to treat, Water-division is easy to treat; the two must be distinguished in detail.
Modified Xiao Tiaojing San (Minor Regulation of Menstruation Powder)
5. In Blood-division disorders, blood stasis prevents circulation, causing edema in the four limbs which is not a mild condition; if menstruation is made unobstructed, the edema will dissipate on its own. Add Honghua (Carthamus), Danpi (Moutan), and Niuxi (Achyranthes) to Xiao Tiaojing San for treatment.
[Note] Edema in Blood-division disorders is caused by blood stasis failing to circulate, flowing into the four limbs, thus causing swelling. It is unnecessary to treat the edema directly; one need only regulate the menstruation. Once menstruation is unobstructed, the edema will subside spontaneously. One should use Xiao Tiaojing San, adding Honghua (Safflower), Danpi (Tree Peony Bark), and Niuxi (Achyranthes Root) for treatment.
Xiao Tiaojing San: See Formula in Volume III under "Edema".
6. Edema preceding amenorrhea is named Water-division; this involves retained fluid in the Bladder with impaired Qi transformation. When water recedes and edema subsides, menstruation will return naturally. Ling Fu Dao Shui Wan (Poria and Water-Guiding Pill) yields miraculous effects.
[Note] Edema in Water-division disorders is caused by internal retention of fluid and failure of Bladder Qi transformation, with water overflowing onto the skin, thus causing edema and amenorrhea. This condition requires only treating the water retention; once the water recedes and edema subsides, menstruation will become unobstructed spontaneously. Use Ling Fu Dao Shui Wan for treatment.
Ling Fu Dao Shui Tang (Poria and Water-Guiding Decoction): See Formula in the Prenatal Section under "Submental Edema".
Modified Gui Pi Tang (Restore the Spleen Decoction)
7. Laughing or weeping alone, fearing people; due to deficient Spirit, nocturnal dreams of demonic intrusion. Gui Pi Tang adjusted with Chen Sha (Cinnabar) and Po Hu (Amber) calms the Zhi (Will) and clears the Heart, pacifying the Hun and Po spirits.
[Note] Women suffering from internal injury due to the Seven Emotions impair the Heart and Spleen. The Spirit lacks protection, allowing demonic pathogens to interfere with upright Qi, resulting in restless Hun and Po spirits. Hence, there are nocturnal dreams of sexual intercourse with ghosts, laughing or weeping alone, as if confronting an adversary; these are the symptoms. One should use Gui Pi Tang, mixed with powdered Chen Sha (Cinnabar) and Po Hu (Amber), taken orally. This will stabilize the Will, clear the Heart, and pacify the Hun and Po spirits, eliminating evil dreams.
Gui Pi Tang: See Formula in Volume I.
