The *Chan Jing* (Classic of Childbirth) states: Feeding infants foods that cause speech impediments is harmful, leading to the formation of *jia* masses (abdominal lumps) in the child's abdomen, which are difficult to treat.
It further states: When a child's teeth have not yet been replaced, honey and malt sugar should not be given for consumption, as this will damage the teeth; even if they are eventually replaced, the new teeth will not be firm.
It also states: Infants must not be fed leftovers from dogs or rats, as this may cause white sores to grow in the throat, potentially leading to death.
Furthermore, it states: Infants must not be fed various fruits that are not yet ripe, as this may induce alternating chills and fever, as well as scrofula (tuberculous lymphadenitis).
The *Yangsheng Yaoji* (Essential Collection for Nourishing Life) states: Do not feed roasted soybeans mixed with wheat to children between one and ten years old, as this may cause qi stagnation leading to death.
It also states: Males under the age of fifteen must not consume ice-cold liquids, because their couli (skin texture and pores) are not yet fully formed, making them susceptible to disease.
It further states: While still breastfeeding, infants should not eat chicken meat, as this may generate roundworms (*Ascaris lumbricoides*) and also lead to emaciation.
The *Cui Yuxi Shijing* (Dietary Classic by Cui Yuxi) states: Do not feed barley flour to children between one and ten years old, as this may cause qi obstruction leading to death.
The *Meng Shen Shijing* (Dietary Classic by Meng Shen) states: Millet (broomcorn millet) should not be fed to infants, as it may impair their ability to walk.
It also states: If infants consume Houttuynia cordata (Ji Cai), they will experience pain in the feet.
Su Jing's Commentary on Materia Medica states: Feeding infants foxtail millet or chestnuts may prevent tooth eruption.
Bencao Shiyi (Supplement to Materia Medica) states: If infants consume shrimp, it may cause leg deformity and inability to walk.
It also states: If infants consume bracken fern, it may cause leg weakness and inability to walk.
The *Bingyuan Lun* (Treatise on Pathogenesis) states: The condition of Jie Lu (delayed closure of fontanelles) presents as an infant whose fontanelle, which should have closed with age, remains open, and the cranial sutures are separated. This is caused by insufficient Kidney Qi.
The Kidney governs bone marrow, and the brain is the sea of marrow. If Kidney Qi is deficient, the marrow and brain will be inadequate and fail to consolidate properly.
The *Chan Jing* discusses a prescription: 1 fen of Xixin (Asarum root), 1 fen of Guixin (Cinnamon twig heart), and 5 fen of Ganjiang (Dried ginger). These three herbs are mixed with milk and applied topically. Reapply when dry.
The *Seng Shen Fang* (Prescriptions by Monk Shen) states: Take the bone marrow from the mandibular condyle of a pig and apply it to the fontanelle once daily for ten days. This is effective.
The *Duanju Fang* (Short Drama Prescriptions) states: Mix 2 fen of raw crab shell and 2 fen of Baiji (Bletilla rhizome). Sift these two ingredients, mix with milk, and apply topically for immediate cure.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states: Roast snake slough into powder, mix with the bone marrow from the pig's mandibular condyle, and apply to the fontanelle three to four times daily.
