The *Zhenzhong Fang* records: Laozi said: Frequently buying horses on Wuzi days and riding them on Sichou days ensures that descendants will have horses generation after generation without interruption.
The *Ruyi Fang* records: Placing sixty jin of yellow stone on land in the Haizi (West-Northwest) direction and under chicken coops favors the breeding of six domestic animals.
The *Ge Shi Fang* (Ge's Formula) records: Eating grain is the sustenance for the common people. If food is cut off for several days, illness will ensue. The *Bencao* (Materia Medica) contains texts on not feeling hungry, but medical formulas do not mention this technique; this is likely because it involves the realm of immortals and wonders, which ordinary people cannot follow. Thus, during famines, corpses are left along the roads, which is truly lamentable? Now, I briefly record the easier methods.
It also says: If one is fleeing in uninhabited areas, or falls into ravines, valleys, empty wells, or deep tombs, surrounded by isolation with no hope of rescue, one should practice Fuqi (Breath Absorption):
Open the mouth and use the tongue to lick the upper and lower teeth to collect saliva, then swallow it. Swallowing three hundred and sixty times a day is good; gradually practicing up to a thousand times will naturally eliminate hunger. Between five and three days, one may feel extreme fatigue, but after this period, strength gradually returns.
It also says: If traveling in areas surrounded by mountains and marshes, there is a formula:
Simply take pine and cypress leaves, finely chop them, and take one or two he (approx. 20 ml) with water; drinking two or three sheng (approx. 400-600 ml) at noon is good.
Another formula: Dig up white cogon grass roots, wash them clean, chop them, and consume them.
Some formulas say: On the third or thirteenth day of the third lunar month, take cogon grass roots, dry them in the sun, and consume them.
Another formula: If soybeans are available, take three sheng, heat them evenly, and take them with water; adzuki beans are also good.
Another formula: If Atractylodes (Shu), Asparagus cochinchinensis root (Tianmendong), Ophiopogon japonicus tuber (Mendong), Polygonatum sibiricum rhizome (Huangjing), and Fritillaria thunbergii bulb (Tubeimu) are available, whether raw or cooked, they can be eaten alone.
Another formula: White fungus growing on trees and the white bark of Ulmus pumila (Elm) can ward off hunger.
It also says: In years of famine when grain prices are high and there is no food, one should prepare various medicines to save lives. Take rice, wash it thoroughly, steam and dry it one hundred times, pound it, eat once a day, and take with water. After thirty days of stopping solid food, one can live without eating for life, walking three hundred li (approx. 150 km) per day.
Another formula: Take five he each of polished rice, stored rice, wheat, roasted hemp seeds, and prepared soybean sprouts, pound into powder, mix with one jin of white honey, boil once, form pills like plums in cold water, and swallow at once. This is a formula for never feeling hungry again for life.
The *Tao Qian Fang* (Tao Qian's Formula) records: Hunger-avoidance formula:
Take one sheng of green millet, soak it in pure wine for three days, steam and dry it one hundred times, expose it to the White Dew, wrap it well, and store it. Eat it when traveling far into the mountains. One meal lasts ten days without hunger.
The *Daqing Jing* (Great Purity Scripture) records: Remove the black skin of Poria cocos sclerotium, pound into powder, soak in pure wine in a pottery vessel until moist. Cover the vessel tightly, seal with mud, and let stand for fifteen days. Take out and form into cakes the size of Go stones, eat three times a day. Alternatively, take the powder, consume one cunbi (approx. 3-5 grams), and one will not feel hungry or thirsty, curing hundred diseases, prolonging life, and preventing aging.
Another formula: Boil Poria cocos in water for several boils, dry it. Soak in wine, take out after five to six days, dry, pound, sieve half a sheng of powder, add one sheng of roasted sesame powder, mix well, and consume all within one day to gradually stop feeling hungry.
Method of consuming Huangjing (Polygonatum sibiricum):
The *Daqing Jing* records: Take Huangjing roots, scrape off hairs, wash clean, chop finely to get one hu (approx. 100 liters), add two hu five dou (approx. 250 liters) of water, simmer over low fire from morning to evening. When ready, remove, break apart by hand, filter through a cloth bag, return the juice to the pot, and simmer until pillable. Pound the dregs into powder, add back to the pot, mix well. Fast overnight, take pills the size of a chicken egg in the morning, three times a day. This stops grain consumption and eliminates hunger. The best time to harvest Huangjing is the seventh day of the third lunar month. (From Zhongyue Immortal's Formula.)
Harvest roots in spring, wash, chop, steam thoroughly, dry, pound into powder, and take one cunbi.
To harvest Huangjing, the second day of the eighth lunar month is best. Dig them up in the mountains and eat raw; drink water if thirsty. Fresh Huangjing pounded yields three sheng of juice. Simmer over boiling water until pillable, shape like chicken eggs. Eat one pill, twice a day. After twenty days, one does not know hunger. (From Laozi's Consumption Formula.)
Method of consuming Pine Resin (Songzhi):
The *Daqing Jing* records: Take refined resin, pound and sieve, mix with honey, place in a bamboo tube, avoid wind and sun. Eat one piece the size of a Go stone, three times a day. It stops hunger and prolongs life. Alternatively, mix with pure wine and take three to one jin.
Method of consuming Pine Needles (Songye):
The *Daqing Jing* records: In all seasons, harvest branches more than one zhang (approx. 3 meters) above ground in the Ren (North) direction, chop finely like millet. Make thin porridge, take two or three he, three times a day. Alternatively, pound, dry, and powder. Alternatively, pound, mix with wine, dry, pound and sieve again, take with wine or water. Raw consumption is superior to dried. All make the body light, prolong life, impart fragrance, reduce sleep, grow green hair on the body, rejuvenate, stop grain consumption, and eliminate hunger.
Method of consuming Pine Nuts (Songshi):
The *Daqing Jing* records: In July, before the cones open, eat water-sinking nuts. Take sinking nuts, remove shells, powder, take one cunbi with wine, three to four times a day. Also, pine resin pills the size of wutong seeds, ten pills, three times a day. Consuming them clarifies the eyes. Another method: After one year of consumption, white hair turns black, and the body glows.
Method of consuming Pine Roots (Songgen):
The *Daqing Jing* records: Take roots growing eastward, peel the white bark, chop finely, dry, pound and sieve, eat until full. This allows stopping grain consumption; drink water if thirsty.
When harvesting pine and cypress leaves, do not take those from graves. Harvest in the first lunar month; spring and autumn are best.
Method of consuming Cypress Resin (Baizhi):
The *Daqing Jing* records: Similar to pine resin for stopping grain consumption, take two to six liang (approx. 60-180 g) daily to stop grain consumption; even one and a half liang suffices.
When consuming pine and cypress resin, prohibit eating meat, fish, vegetables, salt, and sauces; only water and dried meat are allowed.
Method of consuming Cypress Leaves (Baiye):
The *Daqing Jing* records: Take leaves, dry into powder, form pills with honey to stop hunger. Can also be taken with water or wine. Alternatively, mix with white wine, dry, and powder. Pounded consumption is better for the body.
Method of consuming Cypress Seeds (Baishi):
The *Daqing Jing* records: In August, harvest pods, dry until cracked and seeds fall out. Float in water, take sinking seeds. Husk, powder, take two cunbi with wine, three times a day. Gradually increase to four or five he. Those stopping grain consumption can eat freely; drink water if thirsty. Can also be made into pills with pine resin and white honey, ten or twenty wutong seed-sized pills, three times a day. Can also add chrysanthemum and honey.
Method of consuming Jusheng (Sesame):
The *Daqing Jing* records: Some formulas say: Poria cocos and Alisma orientalis rhizome (Zexie) eight liang each, Sesame one jin. Pound Poria and Zexie, sieve. However, some pound Sesame three thousand times to make pills the size of wutong seeds. Take twelve sheng of pure black Sesame seeds, twenty liang of Poria, eight liang of Zexie, grind thirty thousand times, take pill-sized doses with water, three times a day. Do not eat when food is available, take more when not. No restrictions on other foods; suitable for labor, military service, and travel without emaciation. All require grinding thirty thousand times. Roast Sesame until fragrant; can also be made into honey pills.
Method of consuming Hemp Seeds (Mazi):
The *Daqing Jing* records: Two sheng of hemp seeds, one sheng of soybeans, roast both until fragrant and ripe, remove skins, sieve, pound hemp seeds, sieve, mix well. Take one sheng, three times a day. Whether with water or soup, ensure coldness persists. Winter cold and summer heat will not affect you; complexion becomes lustrous, energy increases a hundredfold, running speed matches four-horse chariots. Those whose lifespan has ended may live long; consuming it keeps hearing sharp.
Some formulas say: True Man's Grain-Stopping Method using Hemp and Soybeans. Take one sheng of hemp seeds, one sheng of soybeans, roast until ripe. Remove soybean skins, powder, mix and eat, then take one cunbi, three times a day. Mix with wine or water; long-term consumption strengthens Qi and power, allowing walking three hundred li per day. Very effective.
Another method: Two sheng of hemp seeds, two sheng of soybeans, roast until fragrant, pound and sieve, take one sheng, three times a day. Stops hunger, resists cold and heat, benefits Qi and strength.
Another formula uses one sheng of soybeans, five sheng of hemp seeds, mix with honey to form pills, one pill the size of a chicken egg per dose.
