The *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases) states: Pian Feng (Hemiplegia/One-sided Wind Stroke) refers to wind pathogen lodging predominantly on one side of the body. If the human body has areas of deficiency, the wind pathogen takes advantage of this deficiency to injure it, thus it is called Pian Feng.
The *Qian Shou Jing* (Thousand-Hand Sutra) says: For one-sided Pian Feng, characterized by blockage in the ears and nose and inability to move hands and feet freely, take Sesame Oil (Huma You), decoct Qing Mu Xiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), recite spells thirty-seven times, and then rub and wipe the affected area.
The *Long Men Fang* (Dragon Gate Formulas) treats sudden onset Pian Feng with the following prescription:
Use grass-fire moxibustion until the whole body sweats profusely; recovery will be immediate.
Another formula: Crush Hemp Seed (Damaizi), mix with wine, squeeze out the juice, and take warm. Roasting or steaming is also good.
Yet another formula: Grind Black Sesame (Hei Huma) into powder, soak in wine, and after seven days of administration, efficacy is verified.
The *Ji Yao Fang* (Essential Formulas) treats Pian Feng with a prescription that enables rising within three days of taking the medicine:
Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix, 3 liang) Gui Xin (Cinnamomi Cortex, 2 liang) Gan Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 2 liang) Fu Zi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 2 pieces, processed)
Take the above ingredients, add one and a half sheng of water, boil to obtain half a da sheng of liquid, and divide into two doses.
The *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* states: Wind-induced hemiplegia occurs because the Qi of the Spleen and Stomach is weak, and Blood and Qi are deficient, allowing the wind pathogen to invade.
The *Qian Jin Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) treats severe wind causing hemiplegia with the following method:
Steam soil from mouse holes, place in a bag, and apply as a hot compress for recovery.
Another method: Thoroughly steam Silkworm Excrement (Can Sha), make three linen bags, each holding seven sheng of heat. Place one bag on the affected area. When it cools, take the remaining bags and follow the previous method exactly.
Yet another method: Moxibustion at Feng Chi (GB20), Jian Liao (TE14), Qu Chi (LI11), Yang Ling Quan (GB34), Shang Ju Xu (ST37), and other acupoints.
The *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* states: Feng Jing (Wind Spasm) is characterized by locked jaws unable to open, stiff and straight back, resembling an epileptic seizure. In severe cases, there is stabbing pain in the ears;
The *Xiao Yan Fang* (Effective Formulas) treats wind spasm with body stiffness using the following method:
Steam Soybean (Da Dou), and apply as a hot compress. (This is the same as in the *Qian Jin Fang*.)
Another method: Steam soil from mouse holes, apply as a hot compress to induce sweating.
