The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases) states: Infantile night crying is caused by coldness in the viscera. At night, yin qi is abundant; when combined with cold, the cold moves. This movement of cold clashes with the qi of the viscera, causing irritability or pain, which leads to the infant's night crying. There are also cases where night crying is caused by violating taboos.
The *Longmen Fang* (Formulas from Longmen) records: Tying a mirror to the foot of the bed will stop the crying.
Another prescription: Writing the character "tian" (field) on the umbilicus cures the condition.
The *Duanju Fang* (Short Drama Formulas) records the Xiong San Powder for treating infants who cry all night until dawn before sleeping peacefully, and cry repeatedly at night:
Xiongnu (2 fen) Baizhu (2 fen) Fangji (2 fen)
These three herbs are pounded and sifted. For infants under twenty days old who cannot yet take powder, mix it with breast milk and administer one pill-sized amount (the size of a hemp seed). As the infant grows and can take powder, the dosage should be adjusted according to judgment.
The *Chan Jing* (Obstetrics Classic) records: Take a small amount of Zhenzhu (Pearl), mix with water, and apply to the abdomen.
Another prescription: Apply Che Gao (chariot grease/fat) to the umbilicus.
The *Jiyan Fang* (Collected Proven Formulas) records: Take grass from an empty well, hang it above the door, without letting the mother know.
Current commentary: The *Bencao Shiyi* (Supplement to Materia Medica) states: Grass from the edge of a well pit should be secretly placed under the mother's sleeping mat, without her knowledge.
The *Xuangan Fang* (Xuangan Formulas) records: Take a handful of dried Niu Shi (cow dung), place it under the mother's sleeping mat (letting her sleep on top), without both mother and child knowing, which is auspicious.
The *Ge Shi Fang* (Ge Shi Formulas) records: Take hair from under the neck of a dog, sew it into a pouch, and tie it around the infant's two hands; the crying stops immediately.
Another prescription: In the evening, take the infant's clothing and tie it to a pillar.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) records: If during pregnancy the mother had strong cravings for specific foods, feeding the infant these foods after birth will cure the condition.
The *Bencao Shiyi* (Supplement to Materia Medica) states: Tu Zhong Tu (soil from the stove hearth) and Si Jiao Dao Zhong Tu (soil from four-way intersections) mixed into powder and given to the infant to drink can ward off night crying.
The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases) states: Infantile startling crying refers to sudden crying and startling upon waking from sleep; this occurs because wind-heat pathogenic factors invade the Heart, generating heat, causing spiritual unrest and unstable sleep, leading to startling cries.
The *Chan Jing* (Obstetrics Classic) states: Take a small amount of Zhenzhu (Pearl), mix with water, and apply to the abdomen; this is effective.
The *Ge Shi Fang* (Ge Shi Formulas) records: Pound Baizi Ren (Biota Seed) and administer one Dao Gui (a traditional Chinese measure of volume) with water.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) records: Administer Luan Fa Hui (ash of tangled hair) with wine.
