The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases) states: "Gunchlie" (skin fissure/crack) refers to the rupture of muscle tissue. It is named so because exposure to wind-cold during winter causes the skin of the hands and feet to crack.
The *Ge Shi Fang* (Prescriptions by Ge Hong) for treating winter hand and foot fissures with bleeding and frostbite:
Take wheat seedlings, boil them until the decoction is thick and hot, and use it to wash and soak the affected area.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) for treating rough, cracked, bleeding, and painful hands and feet:
Apply pig fat mixed with hot wine to wash the affected area; this will lead to immediate recovery.
The *Jiyan Fang* (Collected Proven Prescriptions) for treating necrotic frostbite of hands and feet:
Take four he of Sichuan pepper (Shu Jiao). Boil in one dou of water for three boils, remove the dregs, and use the liquid to wash and soak the affected area.
Annotations in *Su Jing's Bencao Jing* (Compendium of Materia Medica by Su Jing): Chewing Bletilla striata (Baiji, White Cohort Lily Rhizome) and packing it into the wound is effective.
The *Fan Wang Fang*: Take withered, yellowing scallion leaves, boil them in water to soak and wash; this is beneficial.
The *Xinlu Fang*: Crush garlic and apply it as a poultice.
Another prescription: Apply char fat (Che Zhi) to the affected area.
The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* states: When the skin of the hands and feet suddenly becomes thick, rough, and hard like a callus, it is called Piandi (callus/corn). This occurs due to stagnant blood and qi circulation failing to nourish the skin.
The *Ge Shi Fang* for sudden onset of calluses on hands and feet:
Take millet flour (Zimi Fen), stir-fry it in an iron pan until red-hot, mix it with saliva from multiple people, apply it thickly (about one cun), and the callus will disappear. (This is identical to the *Fan Wang Fang*.)
Yuzhu Xiang Prescription: Apply salt to the callus and let a cow lick it; this should be done no more than three times.
Another prescription: Make moxa cones and apply three moxibustion treatments (Zhuang) on top of the callus.
The *Xinlu Fang*: Soak in warm urine for recovery.
The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* states: "Nili" (hangnail/peeling skin around nails) refers to the peeling and lifting of skin at the margins of the fingernails or toenails. This is caused by wind-pathogen invading the couli (pores/skin interstices) and disharmony of blood and qi.
The *Qianjin Fang* for treating hangnails on hands and feet:
Ya Qing Zhu (one fen) and Dried Ginger (Gan Jiang, two fen).
Pound into powder, sprinkle onto the lesion three times daily. [Note: Another version states that what the *Ge Shi Fang* calls "Langgan" is not true pearl, but can also be mixed with pig fat for topical application.]
The *Zhenzhong Fang* for treating rough-textured hands and feet:
Wash with water collected from holes in elm trees; the skin will become fine and smooth like fingers.
