The *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Manifestations of All Diseases) states: In cases of fracture or trauma, if spontaneous night sweating occurs that very night, this indicates a rupture of the bone marrow; death will ensue within seven days. If there is no sweating, the patient will survive.
The *Duanju Fang* (Short Drama Formulas) provides a formula for treating fractures of the four limbs:
If there is accumulated blood (hematoma) at the site of the fracture, incise it with a knife to remove the blood. Cold food must be avoided. Pound soybeans (*Sojae Semen), mix them with lard (*Suis Adeps), and apply the mixture to the hematoma. Replace the dressing when it dries.
Another formula: Burn rat feces (*Rattus Feces*), mix with lard, and apply to the bleeding area; this is very effective.
The *Ge Shi Fang* (Ge's Formulas): In cases of fracture, broken bones, and various swellings or sores, one must strictly avoid sleeping in drafts or damp places, and must not fan oneself. If wind-cold invades, it may trigger spasms and trismus (lockjaw), which can be fatal. If these symptoms have already manifested, such as stiffness in the neck and rigidity in the body, use the following method:
Immediately drink two to three sheng of bamboo juice (*Zhuli*). If the mouth is locked shut, force it open with an instrument and administer the liquid. Strictly prohibit the consumption of cold drinks, food, and alcohol.
It also states: For treating ruptured limbs, shattered bones, and tendon injuries from falls:
Thoroughly pound fresh Rehmannia root (*Rehmanniae Radix Recens*) and apply it to the fracture site. Split bamboo slips to weave a splint covering the entire injured area, and bind it tightly. Change the Rehmannia root ten times within a day and night. After three days, the condition will improve.
Another formula: Kill a live rat by opening its back, extract the blood, and apply it while hot to the wound; healing will occur immediately. (Current note: The *Jiyao Fang* records this as a miraculous formula.)
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) provides a formula for treating shattered limb bones and tendon injuries from falls:
Take two sheng of water, soak three sheng of fermented soybeans (*Sojae Semen Preparatum/Douchi*), and drink the extracted juice.
Another formula: At the initial stage of injury, apply hot horse manure (*Equi Mense*) to the affected area; this prevents scarring.
Another formula: Take two sheng of soybeans (*Sojae Semen*) and five sheng of water. Boil until two sheng remain. Mix this bean decoction with six to seven sheng of strong vinegar (*Acetum*). Drink the entire mixture within one day; the effect is as rapid as snow melting in hot water.
Another formula: Fresh Rehmannia root (*Rehmanniae Radix Recens*), regardless of quantity, should be thoroughly pounded and applied to the injured area.
The *Jiyao Fang* (Essential Formulas) provides a formula for treating hand and foot fractures:
Take fresh Rehmannia root (*Rehmanniae Radix Recens*), thoroughly pound it, and apply it to the fracture site. Construct a splint using split bamboo or wood, bind it tightly, change the Rehmannia root ten times within a day and night, and the condition will improve after three days.
It also states: For treating pain from bone and tendon fractures:
Decoct the relevant medicinal wood (referred to here as "fracture-injury wood," likely referring to Sappanwood or similar agents mentioned later) in wine, and drink the concentrated decoction.
The *Xinlu Fang* (Newly Recorded Formulas): Crush two sheng of Sappanwood (*Caesalpiniae Lignum*), add two sheng of water and two sheng of wine, boil until one sheng and six cun remain, and divide into two doses.
Another formula: Decoct and consume Euodia fruit (*Euodiae Fructus*, commonly known as Jiegu Mu or Bone-Setting Wood); follow the same method as for Sappanwood. (Current note: Euodia fruit can be boiled in water for washing, or the decoction can be used for bathing the affected area.)
