The *Xinlu Danfang* records a prescription for treating hematochezia (blood in stool) caused by the dispersion of stone-induced heat:
Scallion white (cut, one sheng) Fermented soybean (one sheng)
Boil with four sheng of water until two sheng remain; take in two doses.
Another prescription: Cut three sheng of Plantago seed herb (Cheqiancao), boil with five sheng of water until two sheng remain; take in three doses.
Huangfu Mi stated: Some cases of dysentery resemble cold invasion, caused by sitting, walking, or dietary indiscretion involving heat pathogens. People often suspect it is their original disease, or that there are internal stagnations and masses; all are due to violating heat precautions. Do not doubt this. Quickly remove clothes, consume cold food and drinks, and wash with cold water. If stools are thick and frequent, and prolonged sitting leads to loss of moderation, this is a sign of impending death. Such cases are difficult to treat. In such instances, purgative decoctions may be administered. Even if only one in ten survives, it is worth trying. Without purgatives, death is certain; do not fear administering them. If death occurs after purgation, there will be no regret.
The *Duanju Fang* provides the Huanglian Tang (Coptis Decoction) to dissipate dispersion, remove heat, and stop dysentery:
Licorice root (one liang) Coptis rhizome (two liang) Cimicifuga rhizome (one liang) Gardenia fruit (fourteen pieces) Fermented soybean (five he)
These five ingredients are boiled with five sheng of water until one and a half sheng remain; take in two doses.
Qin Chengzu stated: The Huanglian Wan (Coptis Pill) prescription to resolve severe intestinal dysentery caused by the dispersion of cold-food stagnation:
Coptis rhizome (sifted into powder, three sheng) Mume fruit (one hundred twenty pieces, pits removed)
These two ingredients are crushed, mixed, and sifted. They are combined with honey, pounded three thousand times, and formed into pills the size of wet cherry seeds. Take twenty pills per dose; up to ten doses per day. For severe cases, up to three or four hundred pills per day may be taken.
The *Xinlu Fang* records that for dysentery caused by the dispersion of stone-heat, consuming one sheng of cow or sheep cheese twice daily is effective.
Another prescription: Consume one or two sheng of barley and rice cooked with water.
Another prescription: [Text missing/obscured] three sheng, soak in four or five sheng of water overnight or boil for three or four boils, then take one sheng cold; two to three times daily will cure it.
The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* states: For those who ingest mineral drugs, the heat from the stones returns to the Kidney, filling the fu-organs with heat. When the fu-organs become hot, body fluids dry up and deplete, causing thirst and a desire to drink.
The *Duanju Fang* provides a prescription to treat heat dispersion and excessive thirst:
Rehmannia root (one jin) Wheat (two sheng) Bamboo leaf (cut, one sheng) Lycium root bark (one jin)
These four ingredients are cut and boiled with one dou of water until nine sheng remain; drink when thirsty.
It also mentions Lu Wanshu’s Jiere Zhike Yin Dihuang Zhi (Rehmannia Juice Drink to Resolve Heat and Stop Thirst):
Rehmannia root (one jin) Wheat (three jin) Lycium root bark (three jin)
These three ingredients are boiled with three dou of water until two dou of juice remain; drink when thirsty.
It also mentions the Danxing Gouqi Baidi Tang (Single-Ingredient Lycium Root White Bark Decoction) to dissipate dispersion, remove heat, and stop thirst:
Lycium root white bark (ten jin)
Boil with three dou of water until one dou remains; divide into doses of one sheng each.
