The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases) states: "Za Li" (Miscellaneous Dysentery/Loose Stools) refers to excrement with no fixed color; water and grain may turn into pus or blood, or appear green, yellow, red, or white. The changes are chaotic and irregular.
In the *Duanju Fang* (Short Drama Formulas), the formulas for treating loose stools/dysentery are as follows: The first treats bloody discharge; the second treats whitish discharge; the third treats yellowish discharge; the fourth treats greenish discharge; the fifth treats blackish discharge; the sixth secures and stops diarrhea; the seventh describes discharge resembling leaking roof water; the eighth resembles clotted blood; the ninth resembles clear water; the tenth is followed by irritability; the eleventh involves one episode of discharge followed by cessation; the twelfth involves loss of appetite; the thirteenth involves excessive eating but only passing stool; the fourteenth involves thirst; [text fragment missing]; Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 1 liang); Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, 1 liang); Shuai Ai (Prepared Mugwort Leaf, 1 liang); Fuzi (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix, 1 liang); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang); Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 2 liang); Wumei (Mume Fructus, 2 pieces).
These seven herbs are mixed, pounded, and sifted. Honey is added to form pills the size of soybeans. Take ten pills with warm water, gradually increasing to twenty pills, three times a day. (Note: The *Ge Shi Fang* says...)
The Wumei Wan (Mume Pill) in the *Fan Wang Fang* treats myriad types of dysentery/loose stools:
Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma), Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, processed), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Ai Ye (Artemisiae Argyi Folium) (each 1 liang); Wumei (Mume Fructus, 20 pieces, flesh only).
These six ingredients are made into pills the size of wu-tzu seeds. Take ten pills, three times a day. Elderly and children take half. It is highly effective.
It also states: For treating cases where there are over a hundred bowel movements per day, which physicians cannot cure: Take Qu Mo (Fermented Grain Powder) equal to one cun-bi (measure), three times a day. Continue until digestion normalizes. It should be taken with millet porridge.
The *Ling Li Fang* formula for Chihuang San (Coptis Powder) to treat dysentery occurring a hundred times a day:
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 2 liang); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 2 liang).
These two ingredients are ground and sifted. Take one cun-bi with wine, three times a day. Cure is immediate.
The *Jiyao Fang* formula for treating imbalance of cold and heat, stagnation, watery stools, or five-colored bloody stools: Crush five vinegar pomegranates (with shell and seeds), squeeze out two sheng (volume unit) of juice.
The *Guangji Fang* formula for Chihuang Tang (Coptis Decoction) to treat hundreds of thousands of miscellaneous dysentery cases:
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 1 liang); Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 1 liang); Shuai Ai (Prepared Mugwort Leaf, 1 liang); Fuzi (Prepared Aconiti Lateralis Radix, one piece, processed); Shujiao (Sichuan Pepper, 14 grains); Ejiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin, size of a finger).
Chop finely, add five sheng of water, boil to obtain two sheng and five he. Strain to remove dregs, add the gelatin, and heat again until melted. Divide into three warm doses. Avoid raw/cold foods, pork, fish, and garlic.
The *Chuanxin Fang* states: A miraculous formula for all types of loose stools/dysentery:
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 2.5 liang); Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex, 1.5 liang); Lingyangjiao (Saiga Tataricae Cornu, 0.5 liang); Fuling (Poria, 0.5 liang).
These four ingredients are made into powder, mixed with honey into pills, and taken with ginger-honey decoction.
Moxibustion formulas for various types of loose stools/dysentery:
The *Jingxin Fang* states: Moxibustion at Shenque (CV-8, Umbilicus), slightly up to 200-300 moxa cones.
