The *Zhu Bing Yuan Hou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases) states: Injury by summer-heat in summer leads to malaria in autumn. Patients with malaria present with emaciation and dry, pruritic skin resembling millet grains. If onset occurs on the first day of the lunar month, recovery should occur by the fifteenth day. If...
The *Tong Xuan Jing* (Classic of Profound Mystery) states: There are various types of malaria, each presenting with distinct manifestations, including warm malaria (*Wen Nue*), cold malaria (*Han Nue*), dan-malaria (*Dan Nue*, pronounced "jin"), labor malaria (*Lao Nue*), and ghost malaria (*Gui Nue*).
The *Ji Yan Fang* (Collected Proven Prescriptions) records: The Yellow Emperor said: All dan-malarial conditions arise from wind pathogen; summer injury by summer-heat results in malaria in autumn. In intermittent malaria, chills precede fever.
Those who experience only heat without aversion to cold...
To treat malaria, one must begin at the four limbs. Approximately the time it takes to eat a meal before the paroxysm, tightly bind the ten fingers of both hands and feet with a thin, left-twisted rope, and release them after the paroxysm has passed.
Another prescription: Take one large spider, place it inside a reed tube, seal the tube mouth tightly, tie it around the neck with a rope, and remove it after the paroxysm has passed. (This is consistent with the *Ge Shi Fang*.)
Another prescription: Place fourteen peach leaves on the heart region, and apply moxibustion fourteen moxa cones directly onto the leaves. (Consistent with the *Seng Shen Fang*.)
Prescriptions for malaria from the *Qian Jin Fang*:
Before the onset, hold a rooster against the chest, occasionally startle it to make it crow loudly; this cures all cases.
Another prescription: Remove the two ends of an old shoe sole, burn it to ash, and administer with well water.
Another prescription: Before onset, apply moxibustion to the tip of the Dazhui (GV14) acupoint on the neck, gradually continuing until past the time of the paroxysm.
Prescriptions for malaria from the *Ge Shi Fang*:
Another prescription: Boil a large amount of fermented soybeans (*Chidou*) to make a decoction, drink several sheng, inducing severe vomiting to cure the disease permanently.
Another prescription: Split a large soybean and remove its skin. Write the character "Sun" (*Ri*) on one piece and "Moon" (*Yue*) on another. Hold the "Sun" piece in the left hand and the "Moon" piece in the right hand, then swallow them. Recovery is immediate. Take facing the sun, and do not let others know.
Another prescription: Roast turtle shell, grind into powder, and take one cubic inch dose with wine. Administer three doses upon the onset of the paroxysm, combined with fire moxibustion, which ensures a cure.
Prescriptions for all types of malaria from the *Long Men Fang*:
Take equal parts of Hengshan (*Radix Dichroae*) and Gancao (*Radix Glycyrrhizae*), grind into powder, mix with water, and take one cubic inch dose. Vomiting indicates recovery.
Another prescription: Take lotus seeds, grind into powder, measure about three finger-widths, mix with wine, and take before the onset. This is effective.
Prescription for malaria from the *Fan Wang Fang*:
At the time of onset, crush large Fuzi (*Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata*), sieve it, mix with vinegar, and apply to the back.
Prescription for malaria from the *Guang Ji Fang*:
Hengshan (*Radix Dichroae*) (3 liang)
Soak in 3 sheng of sour rice wash overnight, decoct to obtain 1 sheng, and take in one dose before the onset. Mild vomiting stops the disease. No dietary restrictions.
Prescription for malaria characterized by severe chills followed by severe heat from the *Duan Ju Fang*:
Xiaomai (*Frumentum Tritici*) (1 sheng) Danzhuye (*Folium Phyllostachydis Henonis*) (one handful) Hengshan (*Radix Dichroae*) (3 liang)
These three herbs are soaked in 5 sheng of water overnight. Decoct on the next morning to obtain 2.5 sheng, divided into three doses.
Pill of Hengshan from the *Seng Shen Fang* that cures all types of malaria:
Dahuang (*Radix et Rhizoma Rhei*) (1 liang, another version says 2 liang) Fuzi (*Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata*) (1 liang, processed) Hengshan (*Radix Dichroae*) (3 liang) Longgu (*Os Mastodi seu Ossis Femoris*) (1 liang)
Grind these four herbs together and sieve. Mix with honey to form pills the size of wu zi (walnut seeds). Take seven pills at dawn; take another seven pills during the interval between paroxysms; take seven pills just before the onset. If the disease does not cease, and recurs on subsequent days, repeat this method. It is very miraculous and effective.
The *Shen Nong Ben Cao Jing* (Divine Farmer's Materia Medica) states: To treat malaria, decoct Caocao (*Herba Hedychii Coronarii*) juice or take raw juice.
The *Ben Cao Ji Yi* (Supplement to Materia Medica) states: To treat malaria, burn cat feces to ash, and take one cubic inch dose with wine.
