The *Zhubing Yuanhou Lun* (Treatise on the Pathogenesis and Symptoms of All Diseases) states: "Mian Gao" (facial freckles/black spots) refers to pigmentation on the facial skin, appearing either like black sesame seeds or like the speckled color of a quail egg. This is caused by wind-pathogen lodging in the skin.
The *Yangsheng Yaoji* (Essentials for Health Preservation) states: "When traveling far and encountering river water, one should not wash the face with it, otherwise 'bird-egg-like' spots will arise."
The *Ge Shi Fang* (Prescriptions of Master Ge) for treating multiple facial spots or those resembling quail eggs:
Soak Baizhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma) in vinegar, and frequently wipe the face with it; the spots will gradually disappear on their own.
Another prescription: Equal parts Taohua (Prunus Persica Flos) and Gua Zi (Benincasae Semen), pounded and applied to the face.
The *Qianjin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) for treating facial spots:
Pound fresh Tu Sheng Ji Cao (likely referring to a specific herb, contextually used as juice source) to extract juice, apply to the affected area; no more than three applications are needed.
Another prescription: Powdered Li Zi Ren (Pruni Semen), mixed with Ji Zi Bai (Albumen Ovi Galli), applied overnight, then the spots will fall off.
Another prescription: Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), soaked in wine until the skin peels off, pounded, placed in a silk pouch, and used to wipe the face at night.
The *Duan Ju Fang* (Short Drama Prescriptions) for treating facial spots:
Mix Bai Mi (Mel) with Fu Ling (Poria), apply to the affected area; after seven days of continuous use, it will heal.
Another prescription: Remove the skin from Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum), grind finely, mix with Ji Zi Bai (Albumen Ovi Galli), apply overnight, then wipe off.
The *Ji Yao Fang* (Most Essential Prescriptions) for treating facial spots, dark powder-like discoloration, etc.:
Bai Lian (Ampelopsis Radix) (2 fen), Sheng Shi (likely a typo for a mineral drug, possibly implying a specific stone preparation) (1 fen), Bai Shi Zhi (Kaolinite) (1 fen), Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum) (0.5 fen, peeled).
Grind the above into a powder, mix with Ji Zi Bai (Albumen Ovi Galli), apply before sleep at night, and wash with well water in the morning. For the elderly or those with fewer spots, the skin will become white and moist.
The *Ru Yi Fang* (Prescriptions Fulfilling Desires) for treating Mian Gao:
Apply Lu E Bai Shi (white feces of cormorant) to the affected area.
Another prescription: Wash the face with water found in tree hollows.
Another prescription: Equal parts Fu Ling (Poria) and Bai Shi Zhi (Kaolinite), ground into powder, mixed with honey, and applied three times daily.
The *Xin Lu Fang* (Newly Recorded Prescriptions): Take Ci Ji Li Mo (Tribuli Fructus powder), mix with honey, and apply.
Another prescription: Apply Si Cao Zhi (juice of larva of scarab beetle) to the face.
The *Seng Shen Fang* (Prescriptions of Monk Shen): Grind Tao Ren (Persicae Semen) and sieve it, mix with Ji Zi Bai (Albumen Ovi Galli), and apply to the face four to five times daily.
Su Jing's Commentary on the Materia Medica: Wash the face with ash water from mulberry wood fire.
Tao Hongjing's Commentary on the Materia Medica: Take bee larvae before they develop heads and legs, soak them in wine, and apply to the face to make the complexion pleasing and white.
