This is called Ma Hou Bi.
The *Qian Jin Fang* (Essential Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states: When throat obstruction involves severe swelling extending to the cheeks and rapid breathing, it is named Ma Hou Bi. The prescription for treating it is:
Take one horse bit (Ma Xian), boil in three sheng of water until reduced to one sheng, and divide into three doses.
Another prescription: Take a handful of roots of *Verbena officinalis* (Mabiancao), avoid exposure to wind, cut off both ends, crush to extract juice, and take orally.
The *Long Men Fang* (Dragon Gate Prescriptions) treats Ma Bi with the following prescription:
Take roots of *Iris lactea* (Malincao), wash thoroughly, burn into ash (one chi), obtain dripping juice from burning jujube branches, mix with the ash, stir, and drink; recovery will be immediate.
The *Bing Yuan Lun* states: Heat in the Spleen and Stomach causes qi to rush upward, resulting in swelling and pain of the throat and pharynx.
The *Ge Shi Fang* (Prescriptions of Master Ge) treats sudden abscesses of the throat and pharynx with inability to eat or drink: Use one bunch of Chinese chives (*Allium tuberosum*), crush and cook/warm them, then apply to the swelling; replace when cool. Mixing with vinegar (Ku Jiu) is also good.
Another prescription: Swallow two seeds of Coix seed (Yiyi Zi).
Another prescription: Burn *Elaeagnus* wood (Jingmu), obtain its juice, and slowly swallow and gargle with it.
Another prescription: Red-heat a weight (Chengchui), immerse it in two sheng of vinegar, wait until boiling stops, then take the liquid to drink.
The *Seng Shen Fang* (Prescriptions of Monk Shen) treats sudden swelling and pain of the throat and pharynx where swallowing saliva is impossible, using Shengma Han Wan (Cimicifuga Lozenge) to clear heat and descend rebellious qi:
Fresh Ye Gan Juice (Liu he) Angelica sinensis root (Danggui, one liang) Cimicifuga herba (Shengma, one liang) Licorice root (Gancao, three fen)
