The *Bingyuan Lun* (Treatise on the Origins and Manifestations of Diseases) states: A pulse that is deep and solid (Chen Shi) on the left hand indicates a male fetus, while a pulse that is floating and large (Fu Da) on the right hand indicates a female fetus; if both hands present with deep and solid pulses, twins boys will be born. If both hands present with floating and large pulses, twin girls will be born. It further states: Have the pregnant woman walk south, then suddenly call her name; if she turns to the left, it is a boy, and if she turns to the right, it is a girl. It also states: If the husband has a nodule in his left breast, it is a boy; if he has a nodule in his right breast, it is a girl.

The *Qianjin Fang* (Prescriptions Worth a Thousand Gold) states: A floating and large pulse at the Chi position (Cun-Kou pulse location corresponding to the Kidneys/Bladder/Lower Jiao) on the left hand indicates a male fetus, while a deep and fine pulse at the Chi position on the right hand indicates a female fetus.

The *Chan Jing* (Obstetrics Classic) states: The method of determining fetal gender through pulse diagnosis:
For a pregnant woman, at three months gestation, the Chi pulse becomes rapid (Shu). A predominantly large pulse at the left Chi position indicates a male fetus, a predominantly large pulse at the right Chi position indicates a female fetus, and large pulses at both Chi positions indicate two fetuses.
It further states: Regarding the pregnancy pulse, a rapid pulse on the left indicates a male fetus, a rapid pulse on the right indicates a female fetus, and large pulses on both sides indicate two fetuses.
It further states: The method for divining fetal gender:
Legend says: Place Chuan Song (a Shen Sha or divine spirit in Chinese astrology) onto the husband's natal year branch, and observe if it appears on the wife's You Nian (wandering year). Obtaining a Yang Shen indicates a male fetus, and obtaining a Yin Shen indicates a female fetus.
One theory states: If Tian Gang and Tian Hou are placed on the mother's age branch, or if You lands on a Yang Chen (Yang Earthly Branch), or if Gong Cao lands on Yang; or if the Heavenly Stem has Qi (vital energy), or if the Time matches the Day Stem, or if a Yang Shen lands on the Day, it will certainly be a male fetus; if Gong Cao lands on a Yin Chen and there is Qi on the Earthly Branch, it will be a female fetus.
One theory states: Obtaining Qing Long (Azure Dragon) and Tai Shang leads to mostly male children. Obtaining Tian Hou and Tai Yang (Yin) leads to mostly female children.
One theory states: Consistently place Chuan Song onto the woman's natal year branch; if the Wandering Year is under a Yang Shen, it is a male fetus; if under a Yin Shen, it is a female fetus.
One theory states: Wei Ming placed on Si Meng (the four beginning branches: Yin, Shen, Si, Hai) indicates a male fetus; Shen Hou placed on Si Zhong (the four central branches: Zi, Wu, Mao, You) indicates a female fetus.
One theory states: If the mother's Wandering Year lands on Si Meng, it is a male fetus; if it lands on Si Zhong or Ji (ending branches), it is a female fetus.
One theory states: Teng She, Zhu Que, Qing Long, Gou Chen, Xuan Wu, and Bai Hu, when added to the Day and Hour, all indicate male fetuses. Liu He, Tian Guan (Kong Wang/Void), Da Yin, Tian Hou, and Da Shang, when added to the Day and Hour, all indicate female fetuses.
One theory states: Direct application: If the Shen is in a Yang position, it resembles the father; if in a Yin position, it resembles the mother. If prosperous (Wang/Xiang), the child will be beautiful; if imprisoned or resting (Qiu/Xiu), the child will be ugly.
It further states: The method of determining fetal gender based on the mother's age:
At age 13, establishing Shen produces a male; at age 14, establishing Wei produces a female; at age 15, establishing Wu produces a female; at age 16, establishing Si produces a male; at age 17, establishing Chen produces a male; [age 18] establishing Hai produces a male; at age 23, establishing Xu produces a male; at age 24, establishing You produces a male; at age 25, establishing Shen produces a male; at age 26, establishing Wei produces a female; at age 27, establishing Wu produces a male; at age 28, establishing Si produces a male; at age 29, establishing Chen produces a male; at age 30, establishing Mao produces a female; at age 31, establishing Yin produces a male; at age 32, establishing Chou produces a male; at age 33, establishing Zi produces a female; at age 34, establishing Hai produces a male; at age 35, establishing Xu produces a male; at age 36, establishing You produces a male; at age 37, establishing Shen produces a male; at age 38, establishing Wei produces a female; at age 39, establishing Wu produces a female; at age 40, establishing Si produces a male; at age 41, establishing Chen produces a female; at age 42, establishing Mao produces a female; at age 43, establishing Yin produces a male; at age 44, establishing Chou produces a male; at age 45, establishing Zi produces a female; at age 46, establishing Hai produces a male; at age 47, establishing Xu produces a male; at age 48, establishing You produces a female; at age 49, establishing Shen produces a male; at age 50, establishing Wei produces a male.
It further states: To calculate the gender using arithmetic: First, write down the husband's age, then the wife's age, and then the month of conception. For a conception in the first lunar month, count as twelve months. Sum these numbers. Then subtract Tian Yi (1), Di Er (2), Ren San (3), Si Shi (4), Wu Xing (5), Liu Lv (6), Qi Xing (7), Ba Feng (8), and Jiu Zhang (9). If the remainder is odd, it is a male; if even, it is a female. This method is infallible.
