Carefully examining each pulse type individually is a rigid and superficial approach. One who can adapt flexibly according to the individual is a practitioner with versatile acumen.

In individuals of slender build, Qi resides at the exterior, so the six pulses often present with Floating (Fu) and Surging (Hong) characteristics.
In individuals of robust build, Qi is contained within, so the six pulses often present with Deep (Chen) and Rapid (Shu) characteristics.
For those with an impatient temperament, five beats per respiration constitute a normal pulse (Ping Mai).
For those with a slow temperament, four beats per respiration are considered indicative of Heat syndrome.
For tall individuals, the fingers should be spaced wider when palpating.
For short individuals, the fingers should be placed closer together.
People from the North often exhibit strong and solid pulses.
People from the South often exhibit weak and soft pulses.
Pulses in the young and vigorous tend to be large.
Pulses in the elderly tend to be deficient.
Pulses after drinking alcohol tend to be rapid.
Pulses after eating tend to be surging.
Pulses after long travel must be swift.
Pulses after prolonged fasting must be empty.
Unmarried women and nuns often have Ru (Soft/Weak) and weak pulses.
Infants' pulses often reach seven beats per respiration.
The Classic states: When form and Qi are harmonious, there is life; when the pulse is irregular and discordant, there is death. How can one fail to examine this?

The pulse is the precursor of Qi and Blood, and the omen of Yin and Yang; it is crucial to grasp its general principles and hold them firmly.
The left hand corresponds to Yang, the right hand to Yin.
The position anterior to the Guan (Cun) corresponds to Yang, the position posterior to the Guan (Chi) to Yin.
Light pressure (Floating/Fu) corresponds to Yang, heavy pressure (Deep/Chen) to Yin.
Restless and rapid corresponds to Yang, slow and delayed corresponds to Yin.
Forceful corresponds to Yang, feeble corresponds to Yin.
Long and large corresponds to Yang, short and small corresponds to Yin.
Understanding these points reveals the major aspects of pulse diagnosis. Thus it is said: In brief, merely by observing Floating, Deep, Slow, and Rapid, one can grasp the outline. Expanding comprehensively, even the twenty-four pulse types cannot exhaust their subtleties. The Classic states: He who knows the essentials concludes with one word; he who does not know the essentials wanders endlessly. This is what is meant.

Under light pressure (Floating), the areas anterior to both Guan positions are Yang. If pulses such as Tight (Jin), Small (Xiao), Short (Duan), or Choppy (Se) are seen, this indicates insufficient Yang being invaded by Yin.
Under heavy pressure (Deep), the areas posterior to both Guan positions are Yin. If pulses such as Surging (Hong), Large (Da), Rapid (Shu), or Slippery (Hua) are seen, this indicates insufficient Yin being invaded by Yang.
When a Yang-type pulse appears occasionally among Yin-type pulses, this is called "Yang hidden within Yin" (Yin Zhong Fu Yang).
When a Yin-type pulse appears occasionally among Yang-type pulses, this is called "Yin hidden within Yang" (Yang Zhong Fu Yin).
When Yin rebels against Yang, chills (E Han) will necessarily occur.
When Yang invades Yin, fever (Fa Re) will necessarily occur.
Cases of Yang hidden within Yin are expected to manifest or worsen in Summer.
Cases of Yin hidden within Yang are expected to manifest or worsen in Winter.
By deducing according to the principles of the Five Elements, the specific months and solar terms of onset can be anticipated.
