Semen Cuscutae (Four liang, stir-fried) Semen Myristicae (Two liang, baked)
Made into pills with date pulp.
For cases where both the Spleen and Kidney are deficient, resulting in intractable diarrhea, this formula is indicated.
The Spleen governs the transformation and transportation of water and grain; the Kidney governs the opening and closing of the two lower orifices (urination and defecation). When the Spleen is weak, it cannot digest water and grain; when the Kidney is deficient, it cannot consolidate the two lower orifices, thus causing intractable diarrhea. Semen Myristicae is acrid, warm, and astringent; its warmth tonifies the Spleen, and its astringency stops diarrhea. Semen Cuscutae is acrid and warm; its acridity disperses pathogenic factors, and its warmth warms the Kidney. If the Spleen and Kidney are not deficient and not cold, then diarrhea will cease.
Radix Ginseng Radix Glycyrrhizae Preparata (Each one qian, honey-fried) Rhizoma Cimicifugae (Three fen) Radix Astragali Preparata (One qian five fen, honey-fried) Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae Preparata Cortex Citri Reticulatae (White pith removed)
This formula is indicated for cases of slippery diarrhea accompanied by chest fullness and oppression.
The *Neijing* states: "When clear Qi sinks below, sundry diarrhea occurs; when turbid Qi remains above, distension occurs." The pathology arises from deficiency of Middle Qi, leading to an inability to ascend the clear and descend the turbid. This formula contains Radix Ginseng, Radix Astragali, Radix Glycyrrhizae, and Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae to tonify the Middle; Cortex Citri Reticulatae to regulate Qi; and Radix Bupleuri and Rhizoma Cimicifugae to raise the sunken Yang. When clear Yang ascends, turbid Yin naturally descends. When turbid Yin descends, fullness and oppression are relieved; when clear Yang ascends, sundry diarrhea ceases. Radix Angelicae Sinensis is omitted because its slippery nature is unsuitable for diarrhea; however, in the high and dry regions of the Northwest, it need not be omitted.
Rhizoma Pinelliae Preparata (Seven liang) Rhizoma Arisaematis Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata (Each three liang) Radix Aconiti (Five qian, skin and umbilicus removed)
Pulverized together, soaked in water for several days, and made into pills.
This formula is indicated for phlegm accumulation causing intractable slippery diarrhea.
In obese individuals, slippery diarrhea is attributed to Phlegm; a slippery and irregular pulse is attributed to Phlegm; lack of appetite without hunger is attributed to Phlegm; becoming thin after previously being fat is attributed to Phlegm. Phlegm is a pathological product transformed from damp Earth. Therefore, Rhizoma Pinelliae and Rhizoma Arisaematis are used to dry dampness and resolve Phlegm; Radix Aconiti Lateralis Preparata is slightly warm and treats Wind-Phlegm; Radix Aconiti is acrid and hot and attacks Phlegm accumulation.
Fructus Aurantii (Qingmuxiang) Semen Myristicae
Made into pills with date pulp, twenty pills per dose, sized like wutong seeds.
The *Jishen Lu* records: Cui Wan'an, Vice Minister of Agriculture in Jiangnan, suffered severely from Spleen diarrhea. His family prayed at the Hou Tu Shrine. Cui Wan'an dreamed of a woman adorned with pearls and wearing shoes, who handed him this formula. He took it as instructed and recovered. Wu Kun stated that Fructus Aurantii can subdue Liver Qi, Semen Myristicae can warm the Middle Jiao, and date pulp can strengthen the Spleen. In chronic diarrhea with Spleen deficiency, Middle Qi must become cold, and Liver Wood will likely overact upon the deficiency to suppress it. The application of this formula is therefore appropriate for achieving efficacy.
