Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata), Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex), Fangji (Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix) (each 4 qian), Zhi Gancao (Honey-fried Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (2 qian), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria) (each 3 qian).
When Yang Qi (Vital Energy of the Yang aspect) is deficient in the lower part of the body, it leads to Cold Jue (a condition characterized by cold extremities due to Yang deficiency and Yin excess). Symptoms include coldness extending from the five toes up to above the knees; this formula is indicated for such cases.
The waxing and waning, advancing and retreating constitute the principle of Yin and Yang. Therefore, when Yang Qi is deficient, Yin Pathogen (Cold-Damp or Yin Evil) must encroach upon it, causing coldness from the five toes up to above the knees, which is named Cold Jue.
In cases of Cold, Fuling (Poria) is a sweet, warm, drying, and permeating herb that can assist in pacifying the obscuration caused by Yin.
Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex), a single herb, stir-baked until brownish, ground into powder and made into pills.
When Yin Essence/Fluids are deficient in the lower part of the body, it causes heat in the soles of the feet, with hot qi ascending along the medial aspect of the thighs; this is named Heat Jue, and this formula is indicated.
When Yang declines, Yin grows; when Yin retreats, Yang advances. Thus, when Yin Qi is deficient in the lower part, Yang moves to fill the void, causing heat in the soles of the feet. When the heat is excessive, it ascends reversely along the three Yin meridians, hence it is called Heat Jue. Huangbai is bitter and potent, belonging to the "Yin within Yin," thus it can tonify insufficient Yin Qi and drain excessive Heat Qi.
Wang Bing stated: "Strengthen the master of Water to control the brightness of Sun." This refers to this formula.
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Bai Fuling (White Poria), Tai Wuyao (Linderae Radix), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium) (each 1 qian), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (5 fen).
When the seven types of Qi (emotions/stagnations) are obstructed and depressed, leading to cold hands and feet, this formula is indicated.
Qi is the Yang Qi of the human body. Once obstructed and depressed, Yang Qi cannot return and reach the extremities, thus causing cold hands and feet. In this formula, Baizhi, Tai Wuyao, and Qingpi can regulate the insufficiency. The Classic says: "Where the pathogenic factor gathers, the healthy Qi must be deficient." Therefore, tonifying herbs are used.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) (2 liang), Tiantaimen Dong (Asparagi Radix), Maimendong (Ophiopogonis Radix), Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), Shu Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) (each 4 liang).
The *Neijing* states: "The Yang Qi of the human body, when subjected to vexatious labor, becomes hyperactive; if essence is exhausted, and this accumulates over time, it leads to Jian Jue (Frying Jue) in summer. This formula is appropriate for treating it."
All movements belong to Yang; thus, vexatious labor disturbs Yang, causing Yang Qi to expand excessively. When Yang Qi expands excessively, labor-fire becomes hyperactive. Fire blazing upwards dries up Water, leading to exhaustion of essence. Therefore, as this condition persists and accumulates until summer, both internal and external heat prevail, Water becomes increasingly deficient, and Fire becomes increasingly hyperactive. Solitary Yang rebels, feeling as if being fried or boiled, hence it is called Jian Jue. In this formula, Sheng Dihuang and Shu Dihuang can rescue Kidney Water and benefit Yin Essence; Tiantaimen Dong and Maimendong can support Lung Metal and clear Summer-heat/Qi. Renshen can consolidate the True Yuan (Original Qi) and treat vexatious labor. Using it to treat Jian Jue is indeed a highly appropriate formula.
