Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, 4 qian, processed) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, 2 qian) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) Fuling (Poria) Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix, each 1 qian)
This formula is indicated for patients with diarrhea accompanied by headache.
When Yang Qi sinks to the lower part, it results in Sundxie (diarrhea with undigested food); when Dampness invades the upper part, it causes headache. This is due to the inversion of the ascending and descending of Clear and Turbid Qi. Wind herbs can overcome dampness, hence Fangfeng is used; dryness can control dampness, hence Cangzhu and Baizhu are used; blandness can promote diuresis and leach out dampness, hence Fuling is used; when Spleen Earth is diseased and Liver Wood overacts upon it, Shaoyao is used. It is also said: if wind remains in the interior for a long time, it becomes Changfeng Sundxie (intestinal wind diarrhea), hence Fangfeng is used; to subdue Liver Qi and soothe Spleen Qi, sour herbs are indispensable, hence Shaoyao is used.
Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) Fuling (Poria) Gancao (Licorice Root) Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix) Huoxiang (Agastaches Herba) Gegen (Puerariae Lobatae Radix)
This formula is indicated for patients with Spleen deficiency manifesting as muscular heat and diarrhea.
For Spleen deficiency, sweet herbs are used to tonify, hence Renshen, Baizhu, Fuling, and Gancao are used; for muscular heat, cooling methods are employed, hence Gegen is used to release the muscle layer; for Spleen stagnation, aromatic herbs are used to awaken the Spleen, hence Huoxiang and Muxiang are added as assistants.
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 10 liang) Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, soaked) Baishaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, stir-fried, each 2 liang)
This formula is indicated for patients with Spleen-Stomach heat causing persistent diarrhea.
Heat diarrhea is characterized by yellowish-brown feces and a constricted, astringent sensation in the anus. Bitter flavor transforms from Fire, and Fire generates Earth, hence Huanglian is used to thicken the intestines and stomach and benefit Earth; musky-sour flavor transforms from Wood, and Wood can loosen Earth, hence Wuzhuyu is pungent and drying, capable of loosening hyperactive Liver Qi, while Shaoyao is sour, capable of draining excess Wood within Earth. Wu represents Stomach Earth, and Ji represents Spleen Earth. This formula is used to regulate the Spleen and Stomach, hence it is called Wuji Wan.
Hezi Ren (Terminalia Chebulae Fructus Semen) Roudoukou (Myristicae Semen, baked in flour coating) Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, each 4 liang) Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, 1 liang) Rougui (Cinnamomi Cortex, 5 qian)
This formula is indicated for patients with Cold-deficiency of the Intestines and Stomach, presenting with slippery diarrhea and abdominal pain.
Cold-deficiency refers to internal cold generated by deficiency of Middle Qi; slippery diarrhea refers to Earth deficiency failing to control Water; abdominal pain refers to Dampness exuberance suppressing Liver Qi. For Cold, warming methods are used, hence Fuzi and Rougui are used; for slipperiness, astringent methods are used, hence Hezi and Roudoukou are used; for suppression, dispersing methods are used, hence Qingpi is used.
