[Shen Su Yin (Ginseng and Perilla Decoction)]
Ren Shen (Radix Ginseng, rhizome removed), Zi Su Ye (Perillae Folium), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, albedo removed), Fu Ling (Poria, cortex removed), Mu Xiang (Aucklandiae Radix), Zhi Qiao (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, stir-fried), Gan Ge (Puerariae Lobatae Radix), Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix, rhizome removed), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) — each five qian.
For colds contracted due to fatigue, as well as colds during pregnancy, this formula is suitable for primary treatment.
Colds should be treated by releasing the exterior; therefore, Zi Su, Gan Ge, and Qian Hu are used. Fatigue and pregnancy require tonifying the interior; therefore, Ren Shen, Fu Ling, and Gan Cao are used. Meanwhile, Mu Xiang, Ban Xia, Zhi Qiao, Jie Geng, and Chen Pi are employed to harmonize and facilitate the qi of both the exterior and interior. When qi is harmonized, spirit is tranquil, and when spirit is tranquil, disease is eliminated.
[Huang Lian Xiang Ru Yin (Coptis and Mosla Decoction)]
Da Fu Pi (Arecae Pericarpium, washed clean), Bai Zhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Fu Ling (Poria, cortex removed), Su Jing Ye (Perillae Caulis et Folium), Huo Xiang (Agastaches Herba) — each three liang; Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, stir-fried), Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, albedo removed), Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, stir-fried with ginger juice), Jie Geng (Platycodonis Radix), Ban Xia (Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum) — each two liang; Zhi Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparatum) — one liang.
This formula is indicated for those who have contracted the abnormal qi of the four seasons, presenting with aversion to cold and high fever.
When wind-cold pathogens lodge in the skin and hair, it is appropriate to release the exterior. However, the abnormal qi of the four seasons enters through the nose; its location is not in the exterior but in the interior. Therefore, heavy sweating to release the exterior is not used; instead, aromatic herbs that benefit qi are primarily employed. Bai Zhi, Zi Su, Huo Xiang, Chen Pi, Da Fu Pi, Hou Po, and Jie Geng are all herbs with potent aromatic qi, thus sufficient to correct abnormal qi. Bai Zhu, Fu Ling, Ban Xia, and Gan Cao are sweet and neutral herbs, used to cultivate middle-jiao qi and establish the banner of middle-jiao Ying (nutritive) qi.
[Preface]
Shu (Summer-heat) is one of the Six Qi. For excess patterns, clear the summer-heat; for deficiency patterns, benefit the qi. This is the general principle. Regarding mixed diseases interfering with each other, flexibility lies with the practitioner. Herein, nine formulas are examined. Discussing pathology and materia medica, one can grasp the main outline, comprehend by analogy, and apply them inexhaustibly.
[Composition of Huang Lian Xiang Ru Yin]
Xiang Ru (Moslae Herba) — one liang; Hou Po (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex, stir-fried), Bai Bian Dou (Dolichoris Semen Album) — each half liang; Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma, stir-fried) — three qian.
After the Summer Solstice, for cases of vomiting and diarrhea accompanied by vexation due to summer-heat, this formula should be taken cold.
Shu (Summer-heat) is a Yang pathogen. If it affects the Spleen, it causes vomiting and diarrhea; if it affects the Heart, it causes vexation. The fragrance of Xiang Ru enters the Spleen to clear summer-heat and stabilize vomiting and diarrhea; the bitterness of Huang Lian enters the Heart to drain heat and treat vexation. Summer-heat pathogens knotting in the chest cannot be dispersed without Hou Po; summer-heat pathogens sinking into the Spleen and Stomach cannot be harmonized without Bai Bian Dou. However, it must be taken cold because, as the classics state, "treat warm diseases with clearing methods, administer them while cool." In this formula, when latent heat exists, one feels the oppressive heat of midsummer; or upon returning from long travel, feeling injured by summer-heat, taking one or two doses is indeed appropriate. Nowadays, people sit in grand halls, accustomed to ice plates and water pavilions, and prefer floating melons and fruits. Since the summer-heat pathogen is originally shallow, seeking this medicine is common; some even drink it daily. This is called excessive punishment (over-treating). Those with weak constitutions will suffer from cold-injury ailments at dawn or dusk; those with strong constitutions will wait for the time to fall ill, developing diarrhea or dysentery in autumn. Be cautious!
