Ancient medical formulas included the use of Shenqu and Maiya (Fermented Rice and Sprouted Millet) to digest food stagnation; Sharen and Awei (Amomum Fruit and Ferula Resin) to eliminate meat stagnation; Chenpi, Zisu, and Shengjiang (Tangerine Peel, Perilla Leaf, and Fresh Ginger) to resolve fish and crab-related discomfort; Dingxiang and Guixin (Clove and Cinnamon Heart) to rot fruit and vegetable stagnation; Qianniu and Yuanhua (Pharbitis Seed and Genkwa Flower) to attack water retention; Sanleng and Biejia (Burreed Tuber and Turtle Shell) to dissipate zhengjia (masses); Fuzi and Liuhuang (Prepared Aconite Root and Sulfur) to remove chronic cold; Shuizhi and Mengchong (Leech and Blue Bottle Fly) to attack blood stasis masses; Muxiang and Binglang (Aucklandia Root and Areca Nut) to attack qi stagnation; Xionghuang and Nifen (Realgar and Calomel) to attack phlegm accumulation; Mengshi and Badou (Lapis Lanati and Croton Seed) to attack phlegm-food binding. Using Gansui and Gancao (Kansui Root and Licorice Root) together relies on their mutual antagonism to eliminate accumulation. However, the formulators had not yet reached a state of divine subtlety; few did not gather various toxic substances to make pills. This is likened to "hunting without knowing where the rabbit is, spreading nets over vast fields," hoping to catch one rabbit by chance—a strategy that was indeed too crude. Now, several miraculous events from ancient times are listed below to broaden knowledge.

The *Records of the Grand Historian* states: Bo Wu, a woman from Linzi, was severely ill. Most physicians believed she suffered from severe chills and fever and would die. Chunyu Yi (the Earl of Cang) diagnosed her pulse as showing *Naojia* (a condition characterized by abdominal distension due to parasites or accumulation). The symptoms were an enlarged abdomen with yellowish, rough skin that felt hard and tense upon palpation. Chunyu Yi intended to administer a pinch of Yuanhua (Genkwa Flower), after which several sheng (a unit of volume) of nematodes were expelled, curing the disease. Thirty days later, she recovered fully. The *Naojia* was contracted from cold-dampness. When cold-damp qi stagnates deeply and fails to disperse, it transforms into worms. Chunyu Yi knew this was *Naojia* because palpating the radial artery and the skin at the cubital fossa revealed a coarse, prickly pulse texture with erect hair, indicative of worm qi. Her lustrous complexion indicated no pathogenic factors in the zang-fu organs or critical illness. Wu Kun interprets Chunyu Yi’s attribution of *Naojia* to cold-dampness as referring to the qi of Cold-Water and Damp-Earth. When these qis stagnate excessively and cannot be vented, they transform into worms, which aligns with the concept that damp-heat generates worms. Yuanhua has a cold nature and bitter-pungent taste; it is toxic but can descend water in the twelve meridians and attack accumulations, thus expelling nematodes generated from water and earth.

Chu Cheng of Northern Qi was skilled in medicine and served as the Prefect of Wu Commandery during the Jianyuan era. A commoner named Li Daonian came to the commandery for official business. Chu Cheng saw him from afar and said, "You have a strange disease." Daonian replied, "Indeed, I have suffered from a cold ailment for five years." Chu Cheng diagnosed his pulse and said, "It is not a cold ailment; it is caused by excessive consumption of chicken eggs." He ordered a sheng (unit of volume) of garlic to be taken. Upon ingestion, Daonian vomited approximately a sheng of material wrapped in saliva, moving within it. Upon examining the saliva, it was found to be a chick, complete with wings and spurs, capable of walking. Chu Cheng said, "Not yet. Why not take the remainder?" Daonian complied and vomited thirteen more eggs, after which the disease was cured. Wu Kun notes that garlic is pungent and hot, capable of strengthening qi. When righteous qi is strong, pathogenic factors cannot reside, leading to upward expulsion. This reflects the principle of "the way of the gentleman grows, while the way of the petty man declines." The Classic states: "Those who are robust recover as qi moves; those who are weak develop disease as pathogens adhere." This illustrates that principle.
