Fresh Lotus Leaf (He Ye), Fresh Mugwort Leaf (Ai Ye), Fresh Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di Huang), Fresh Biota Seedling (Ce Bai Ye)
Mash these four ingredients thoroughly and form pills the size of a chicken egg. Take one pill per dose.
When Yang invades Yin, causing blood heat to move recklessly, resulting in hematemesis or epistaxis, this formula is also effective.
Generally speaking, since the herbs are used in their raw state, they possess cold properties, thus all four can clear fire. Specifically analyzed, Lotus Leaf and Mugwort Leaf have light, fragrant aromas, clearing fire at the Qi level; Biota Seedling and Rehmannia Root have solid substance, draining fire at the Yin level. Once fire is eliminated, blood returns to its vessels, and hematemesis and epistaxis heal.
Coptis Rhizome (Huang Lian), Scutellaria Root (Huang Qin), Phellodendron Bark (Huang Bo), Gardenia Fruit (Zhi Zi) (each 3 qian, stir-fried)
For bleeding from upper orifices caused by Yang toxicity, this formula is indicated.
Treating disease requires seeking its root. In cases of upper orifice bleeding due to Yang toxicity, heat is the root, and bleeding is the branch. By eliminating heat, blood need not be specifically treated but will naturally return to its vessels. Therefore, bitter-cold substances such as Coptis Rhizome, Scutellaria Root, Gardenia Fruit, and Phellodendron Bark are used to resolve heat. However, this formula is suitable only for excess fire due to Yang toxicity. If the fire is due to Yin deficiency, excessive use of downward-draining herbs will deplete Yin, and the bitter nature may transform into fire, exacerbating bleeding; thus, this formula is contraindicated in such cases.
Dry on a new tile, take 3 qian mixed with warm water.
For persistent epistaxis, this formula is indicated.
Ren Zhong Bai (Human Urine Sediment), also known as Niao Bai in *Ben Cao*, has a salty and cold flavor. Salty enters the Blood level, and cold overcomes heat. Its potency is stronger than human urine itself, hence its efficacy is particularly rapid.
Take over 10 jin of fresh Rehmannia Root, wipe clean with a new cloth, crush, and squeeze out the juice. Do not wash with raw water.
For persistent hematemesis and epistaxis, this formula is also effective.
Li Dongyuan stated: "Rehmannia Root cools blood heat in the Heart Fire, drains damp-heat in Spleen Earth, stops nasal heat causing epistaxis, and removes five-palm vexation-heat." Therefore, for diseases of hematemesis and epistaxis, taking its natural juice slowly allows the blood to cool and bleeding to stop.
Rubia Root (Qian Gen), Donkey-hide Gelatin (E Jiao), Scutellaria Root (Huang Qin), Biota Seedling (Ce Bai Ye), Rehmannia Root (Sheng Di Huang) (each 1 liang), Honey-fried Licorice Root (Zhi Gan Cao) (5 qian)
For epistaxis due to Yin deficiency, this formula is indicated.
In humans, Yin and Yang are healthy when balanced and diseased when imbalanced. If Kidney Yin becomes deficient, Yang becomes relatively excessive, carrying blood upward and causing epistaxis. In this formula, Donkey-hide Gelatin tonifies deficiency, Scutellaria Root nourishes Yin, Licorice Root relieves urgency, while Rubia Root, Biota Seedling, and Rehmannia Root all clear heat from the Blood, capable of generating Yin during periods of hyperactive fire.
