Baihua She (Deinagkistrodon acutus, White-flower Snake), Wushao She (Zaocys dhumnades, Black-striped Snake) (soaked in wine for one night), Dilong (Pheretima aspergillum, Earthworm) (free from soil, 3 liang each), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, Dong Quai) (prepared with wine), Cangzhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, Atractylodes Rhizome) (soaked in rice washing water for seven days), Mubiezi (Strychni Semen, Nux Vomica Seed) (shell removed), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, Asarum Root), Manjingzi (Viticis Semen, Vitex Fruit), Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix, Dahurian Angelica Root), Chishao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, Red Peony Root), Weilingxian (Clematidis Radix et Rhizoma, Clematis Root), Tianma (Gastrodiae Rhizoma, Gastrodia Rhizome), Tiandongdong (Ophiopogonis Radix, Ophiopogon Root), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma, Szechwan Lovage Rhizome), Gan Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos, Chrysanthemum Flower), Heshouwu (Polygoni Multiflori Radix, Fo-ti Root), Zishen (Scutellariae Barbatae Herba, Scutellaria Barbata Herb), Jingjiesui (Schizonepetae Spica, Schizonepeta Spike), Shashen (Adenophorae Radix, Ladybell Root), Shichangpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma, Sweet Flag Rhizome), Huma (Sesami Fructus Usticus, Stir-fried Sesame Seed), Kushen (Sophorae Flavescentis Radix, Sophora Root), Buhui Mu (Asbestos, Non-burning Wood), Caowu (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix, Kusnezoff Monkshood Root), Zhigancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Preparata, Prepared Licorice Root), Baijili (Tribuli Fructus, Tribulus Fruit), Dingfeng Cao (Tianma's seedling, Dingfeng Grass), Muzei (Equiseti Herba, Horsetail Herb) (1 liang each).
Grind all the above ingredients into powder. Take 5 qian per dose, mixed with wine after meals; drinking more is advisable.
This formula is indicated for long-standing大风 (Feng Da, severe leprosy/mal de Meleda) that has not healed, characterized by falling eyebrows, collapse of the nasal bridge, and swelling and ulceration of the forehead and skull.
The upper half of the body belongs to the Yang Qi of Heaven. When diseased, the Qi is affected; when Qi is affected, the disease manifests upwards, hence the symptoms of eyebrow loss, nasal collapse, and skull ulceration. At the high peak (head), only substances like Dingfeng Cao, which have light and clear flavors, can ascend to the head, dispel wind, and overcome dampness. Meanwhile, Buhui Mu, Shichangpu, Caowu, and Cangzhu can directly treat dampness. Kushen, Zishen, Shashen, and Heshouwu are used to detoxify. Danggui, Gancao, Tiandongdong, Chishao, and Huma nourish blood and clear qi within the group of wind-dispelling and dryness-resolving herbs. Dilong is a creature that wriggles in mud, transformed from damp earth, so it can guide other drugs towards dampness; Baihua She and Wushao She belong to creatures that leap and bound, representing the image of moving wind, so they act as sovereign drugs to lead others in dispelling wind. This is what the *I Ching* (Book of Changes) refers to as "clouds follow the dragon, wind follows the tiger."
Chanqiao (Cicada Slough), Dilong (Stir-fried), Baijiangcan (Bombyx Batryticatus, Silkworm) (Stir-fried), Quanxie (Scorpio, Scorpion) (Stir-fried, 7 each), Lingxiao Hua (Campsis Grandiflora Flos, Trumpet Vine Flower) (0.5 liang).
Grind the above into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with warm wine at any time. Once, sitting in a bathhouse hot water for about an hour before taking this medicine yielded miraculous results.
For Li Feng (Li Feng, Leprosy), this formula often achieves remarkable effects.
When Li Feng attacks and destroys Qi and Blood, and herbal or mineral remedies fail, animal-derived substances must be used. Chanqiao treats Wind-Heat, Dilong treats Wind-Damp, Jiangcan and Quanxie treat Wind-Toxicity, and Lingxiao Hua treats blood damaged by wind. These five substances all possess slight toxicity; using them to treat Li Feng exemplifies the principle of "using similar nature to weaken the pathogen." However, one must sit in the bathhouse hot water while taking the medicine to open the Couli (skin pores) and allow the pathogenic factors to exit.
