Guizhi Tang (Cinnamon Twig Decoction): Cinnamon Twig (Guizhi, *Cinnamomi Ramulus*), White Peony Root (Baishao, *Paeoniae Radix Alba*), Fresh Ginger (Shengjiang, *Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), Jujube (Dazao, *Ziziphi Jujubae Fructus)*, Licorice Root (Gancao, *Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma)*, Prepared Aconite Root (Fuzi, *Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata*).
In Taiyang disease (disease of the Taiyang channel), after sweating therapy, if perspiration continues unceasingly, accompanied by aversion to wind, difficulty in urination, slight stiffness of the four limbs making flexion and extension difficult, this formula is indicated. In cases where Wind-Dampness pathogens interfere with each other, causing severe body pain and restlessness, preventing turning over or shifting position, this formula is also indicated.
Unceasing perspiration following sweating therapy depletes the exterior and causes Yang collapse. When Yang is deficient, it cannot protect the exterior, hence the aversion to wind. Difficulty in urination arises because both the channels and the fu-organs are deficient; the Qi transformation of the Bladder fails, leading to an inability to excrete urine. Excessive sweating depletes Body Fluids at the exterior, which fail to nourish the sinews, resulting in slight stiffness of the four limbs and difficulty in movement. Guizhi Tang is used to harmonize Ying (Nutritive) and Wei (Defensive) Qi at the exterior; adding Fuzi strengthens the Primordial Yang at the exterior. "Wind-Dampness interfering" refers to the mutual agitation of Wind and Dampness pathogens. How do we know this? If Wind were the sole pathogen, symptoms would typically follow the patterns of the Six Channels. However, since the entire body suffers from pain and restlessness with an inability to turn, there are no specific channel patterns to distinguish, thus indicating Wind-Dampness interference. Guizhi Tang resolves Wind at the exterior, while Fuzi warms and dispels Cold-Dampness.
Ephedra Herb (Mahuang, *Ephedrae Herba* - removed nodes), Asarum Root (Xixin, *Asari Radix et Rhizoma* - removed soil, 2 liang each), Prepared Aconite Root (Fuzi, *Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata*, 1 piece).
In Shaoyin disease (disease of the Shaoyin channel), upon initial onset, if there is fever contrary to expectation and a deep pulse, this formula is indicated.
Diseases originating from Yin channels should not present with fever. Why does Shaoyin disease present with fever upon initial onset? This is due to the transmission between the Taiyang and Shaoyin channels, which are interior-exterior pairs. The Taiyang Bladder Channel and Shaoyin Kidney Channel are interior-exterior partners. When the Kidney Channel is deficient, Taiyang pathogens enter directly into the Kidneys via the collaterals. Since residual pathogens have not fully entered the interior, there is fever at the exterior; true Cold has entered the Kidneys, hence the deep pulse at the interior. Because there is Taiyang exterior heat, Mahuang is used to induce sweating; because there is Shaoyin interior cold, Xixin and Fuzi are used to warm the interior.
Coptis Rhizome (Huanglian, *Coptidis Rhizoma* - removed hairs, stir-fried, 4 liang), Scutellaria Root (Huangqin, *Scutellariae Radix*, stir-fried, 1 liang), Egg Yolk (Jizihuang, *Galli Yolk Sac*, raw, 2 pieces), White Peony Root (Baishao, *Paeoniae Radix Alba*, stir-fried, 2 liang), Donkey-Hide Gelatin (Ejiao, *Colla Corii Asini* - stir-fried with clam powder, 3 liang).
In Shaoyin disease, if there is mental restlessness and an inability to sleep, this formula is indicated.
When Cold pathogens directly strike the Three Yin channels, it is named Yin Syndrome, remaining within one channel without further transmission. However, when transmitted from the Three Yang channels, even if reaching the Three Yin channels, it is still termed Yang Syndrome. The difference in transmission lies in the nature that Yin is static and Yang is active. Symptoms of Shaoyin disease include dry tongue and mouth, and somnolence. The desire to sleep but inability to do so results in mental restlessness and insomnia. Shaoyin belongs to the Water organ; when Water is scorched by Heat, it cannot control Fire, leading to restlessness. For excess Yang, bitter flavors are used to drain, hence Huangqin and Huanglian are used for their bitterness. For insufficient Yin, sweet flavors are used to tonify, hence egg yolk and Ejiao are used for their sweetness. For depleted Yin Qi, sour flavors are used to astringe, hence Baishao is added for its sourness.
