Tao Ren (Persicae Semen, 120 seeds, remove the skin and tips, do not use those with two kernels)
Only this single herb is pounded into pills. Taken at dawn with well water, one dose every other day. For one hundred days, meat must not be consumed.
This formula is indicated for bone-steaming [Gu Zheng] that has persisted for a long time.
When bone-steaming persists for a long time, there is retained blood in the collaterals. If the stasis is not removed, other medicines will be ineffective. The formula from *Waitai Miyao* uses only Tao Ren as a pill, precisely to eliminate retained stasis; this is also an extraordinary insight.
Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 10 liang, steamed) Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix, 2 liang, stir-fried) Gan Di Huang (Rehmanniae Radix Preparata, half liang) Xing Ren (Armeniacae Semen Amarum, remove skin and tips) Qicao (Melandryae Semen, stir-fried)
Meng Chong (Larva Tabanidae, remove wings, stir-fried, each 1 sheng) Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 3 liang) Gan Qi (Resina Taxodi, stir-fried) Tao Ren (Persicae Semen, remove skin and tips, each 1 liang) Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Alba, 4 liang) Shui Zhi (Hirudo, 100 pieces)
The above twelve herbs are ground into powder and made into pills with honey, the size of small beans. Take three times a day, five pills each time, washed down with wine.
Zhong Jing said: "Five types of exhaustion lead to extreme debility and emaciation, abdominal fullness, inability to eat, injury from food, injury from sorrow, injury from drink, injury from sexual intercourse, injury from hunger, injury from labor, injury to the meridians, Ying and Wei Qi. There is dry blood inside, the skin is rough like scales, and the eyes are dark." To moderate the middle and tonify deficiency, Da Huang Zhe Chong Wan is indicated.
When turbid Yin does not descend, clear Yang cannot ascend; this is the way of Heaven and Earth. When petty persons do not recede, noble persons cannot advance; this is the way of the state and family. Therefore, when heat-steaming persists for a long time, dry blood accumulates internally; if dry blood is not removed, new blood cannot be generated; this is the way of the human body. In this formula, Gan Qi, Tao Ren, Meng Chong, Shui Zhi, Qicao, and Zhe Chong are substances that remove dry blood. Da Huang serves as the sovereign herb, taking orders from the general. Shao Yao and Di Huang serve as assistant herbs to generate new blood. Xing Ren and Gan Cao serve as assistant herbs to promote new Qi. Huang Qin serves as an assistant herb to drive away wandering heat and strengthen the intestines and stomach. Zhong Jing is revered as the medical patriarch for a hundred generations, truly possessing wisdom. Nowadays, when people encounter emaciation due to the five exhaustions, they use yin-nourishing methods without success, and then sit waiting for death. Alas! Is medicine limited to only this?
