White pigeon (a pair, not submerged in water, feathers, intestines, and viscera removed, slightly opened) Psoraleae Fructus (Chonglouzi, 急性子) (stir-fried) Tribuli Fructus (Lihua, 藜花子) (water-stir-fried) Rheum Palmatum Radix et Rhizoma (Dahuang, 大黄) (sun-dried) Natrii Sulfas (Piaoxiao, 朴硝)
(each five qian)
Grind into fine powder, place inside the pigeon's abdomen, tie tightly, cook thoroughly in a clay pot with aged wine. After cooling, remove the herbs. Sun-dry the pigeon meat for half a day in the wind, crush it, and stir-fry until roasted, avoiding charring. Mix with the previously mentioned herbs, grind into fine powder, and sieve. Form pills using glutinous rice flour paste, size of Sophora japonica seeds. Take five qian on an empty stomach. The mass will transform into pus and blood, resembling fish mucus or sticky glue, and be discharged through the stool, dissolving imperceptibly; its wonders are too numerous to recount.
Narration: Clanging noise (Zacao, 嘈杂), is a Fire syndrome, with Phlegm being secondary. Those suffering from lifelong clanging noise will surely have a shortened lifespan. Is this mere nonsense?
Among all things, nothing is more potent than Fire. Therefore, I examine three formulas to treat clanging noise.
Ammi Fructus (Haishi, 海浮石) (ground, levigated with water) Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Nanxing, 南星) (prepared with ox bile) Benincasa Fructus Semen (Gualouren, 栝蒌仁) (oil removed) Gardeniae Fructus (Shanzhi, 山栀) (stir-fried until black) Indigo Naturalis (Qingdai, 青黛) (levigated with water) Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu, 香附) (soaked in children's urine) Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu, 苍术) (soaked in rice washing water for seven days) Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma (Fuxiong, 抚芎)
Phlegm stirred by Fire causes clanging noise; this formula governs it.
Clanging noise is caused by Phlegm-Fire moving internally, feeling like coarse food stuck in the diaphragm, causing discomfort. In this formula, the salty nature of Ammi Fructus can soften stubborn Phlegm. The drying nature of Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum can dry damp Phlegm. The bitter nature of Benincasa Fructus Semen can descend rebellious Phlegm. Gardeniae Fructus and Indigo Naturalis are bitter-cold substances, used to drain Fire. Cyperi Rhizoma, Ligusticum Chuanxiong Rhizoma, and Atractylodis Rhizoma are pungent-aromatic substances, used to disperse constrained Qi.
Scutellariae Radix (Huangqin, 黄芩) Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连) Phellodendri Cortex (Huangbai, 黄柏) Cyperi Rhizoma (Xiangfu, 香附) (soaked in vinegar for five days) Atractylodis Rhizoma (Cangzhu, 苍术) (soaked in rice washing water for seven days)
For clanging noise due to constrained Fire, this formula is also excellent.
Pungent-aromatic substances can open constraint, hence Cyperi Rhizoma and Atractylodis Rhizoma are used. Bitter-cold substances can drain Fire, hence Scutellariae Radix, Coptidis Rhizoma, and Phellodendri Cortex are used. However, the coldness of the Three Yellows does not become stagnant when combined with Atractylodis Rhizoma and Cyperi Rhizoma. The aromaticity of Atractylodis Rhizoma and Cyperi Rhizoma does not become drying when combined with the Three Yellows; their mutual cooperation achieves success in this manner.
Pinelliae Rhizoma (Banxia, 半夏) Citrus Reticulata Pericarpium (Chenpi, 陈皮) Poria (Fuling, 茯苓) (peel removed) Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (roasted) Coptidis Rhizoma (Huanglian, 黄连) Gardeniae Fructus (Zhizi, 栀子)
This is the decoction for treating clanging noise.
The generation of Phlegm originates from Dampness; thus, Pinelliae Rhizoma dries Dampness, and Poria leaches out Dampness. When Dampness is removed, Phlegm is not generated. Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma strengthens the Spleen; when the Spleen is strong, it can control Dampness. Citrus Reticulata Pericarpium promotes Qi movement; when Qi moves, Phlegm also moves. The addition of Coptidis Rhizoma and Gardeniae Fructus utilizes their coldness to overcome Heat and bitterness to descend Fire.
